What you can expect
At McCarthy, we understand that your internship is a valuable opportunity for you to learn about the commercial construction industry. Though every McCarthy project is unique, our interns will have the opportunity to experience life within a vibrant, growing construction firm, interact with senior company management and participate actively in the building process…all of this while receiving a competitive salary and being part of a building project that will last for years and years.
Each intern is assigned a mentor to ensure time at McCarthy is well spent and any questions are addressed. Some of the many assignments our interns may expect to work on include:
Field Operations
- Scheduling, checking material deliveries
- Assisting with cost control, inventory control, subcontractor monitoring
- Assisting with report preparation
- Assisting in safety inspections and participating in jobsite walks
- Conducting site tours
Office Operations
- Preparing quantity take-offs, calling vendors and subcontractors for proposals
- Checking drawings and specifications for completeness, discrepancies
- Attending bid openings, conferences
- Assisting with project record keeping, preparing shop drawings, and assisting with cost control records
Project Management
- Assisting project managers and superintendents
- Coordinating subcontractor activities
- Planning and scheduling, processing change and extra work orders, preparing requests for progress payment
- Obtaining permits and licenses, checking zoning and code requirements, designing temporary facilities
- Arranging for utility services, conducting safety inspections and training, supervising punchlist activities.
- Expediting material deliveries, assisting in documenting and preparing claims.
- Verifying work hours, materials used and other elements necessary for updating database files.
- Preparing briefing charts and formal reports
- Helping with close out
Other Training
- To meet the needs of our Project Engineers and Interns, we developed our intensive Management Development Program (MDP) more than a decade ago.
- As a participant in this program, all Project Engineers and Interns have the opportunity to engage with other engineers from across their division, share best practices and learn from senior management.
