Training and Development
A Training Culture
Learning is a Core Value at McCarthy.
Offering opportunities for personal and professional growth for all of our employees, including our interns, is more than just lip service at McCarthy. Our employee-owners expect and insist upon these opportunities. And, with the next generation of leaders at McCarthy developing now, the success of our company's future depends on it.
To be the Best Builder in America we must always seek new and better ways to do things.
On our projects. In our offices. Through our relationships. Our company-wide focus on providing timely and relevant training and education offerings supports this effort. As an employee-owned company, our success directly derives from the combined success of our owners.

The McCarthy BUILD U training and education program provides the platform to help each employee achieve his or her personal best. A complete curriculum offering a diverse array of learning opportunities, the program rests on the philosophy that each of us has a plan for our personal development, and McCarthy is committed to helping us get there. In 2008, McCarthy employees received an average of 52 hours per employee—far superior to the national average for construction companies.
No matter where you are in your career, we offer a wide array of educational opportunities to put you on the path to success.
Core tenets of Build U include:
- A commitment to start training and development on day one
- A belief that EVERY employee, from the CEO down, is a trainer who has knowledge to share
- A focus on blended training vehicles, including instructor-led programs, self-paced computer-based training, hands-on experience simulations and on-the-job training
- A well-defined development path for every employee, regardless of position
- A development philosophy based the notion of a two-way street. We'll provide every tool and opportunity for learning, but at the end of the day, it is up to each employee to take control of your career and development
Customized Training for Interns and New Graduates

Designed to assist in the evolution of these employees into astute managers, mentors and future leaders, the MDP program provides comprehensive training for McCarthy employees by McCarthy employees.
As a participant in this program, all project engineers and interns have the opportunity to engage with other engineers and interns from across their division, share best practices and learn from senior management. Topics covered include:

Your role? You have to take responsibility for your career and development. We'll provide every tool imaginable, but at the end of the day, it's all about your drive and desire to grow and succeed.
