“We have been impressed with the proactive can-do attitude of the McCarthy team. They went the extra mile many times over to give the taxpayers a superb facility that will be a model of energy efficiency and set new standards for the district.”
—J.P. Gerner, associate superintendent, facilities, Clark County School District

Burkholder

McCarthy recently completed construction on a $39 million replacement project at Lyal Burkholder Middle School for the Clark County School District.

Formerly the site of Basic High School, Burkholder has been a part of the Henderson community since 1954 and boasts a long list of notable alumni including United States Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, as well as Henderson Mayor Jim Gibson. The 122,000-square-foot school features five new buildings in addition to the renovation of the original brick gymnasium structure. To maximize energy efficiency, the school incorporates the use of natural lighting, low-e glazing, electronic controls for sensing and adjusting light levels, waterless restroom fixtures, and features a geo-thermal heat exchanger and air conditioning system to draw cooling and heating from the ground through 300 holes drilled about 285 feet down. Burkholder is expected to use half the energy of a comparable school and has been awarded the Energy Star award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
