“From day one, McCarthy managed this project to hit a very tight deadline. The team demonstrated superb skill and dedication and was backed by a powerful, mission-oriented front office.”
—Steve Bovee, construction management director, San Diego Unified School District

The start of September marked an exciting day for students and staff arriving at the new $24.1 million Laura G. Rodriguez Elementary School, in the heart of San Diego’s Barrio Logan neighborhood.
The K-5 facility, which accommodates 650 students, was successfully completed on an aggressive 16-month schedule in time for the start of the San Diego Unified School District’s (SDUSD) school year. McCarthy was commissioned by SDUSD to provide full construction management services for the new facility. The multi-prime project utilized 25 different contractors requiring precise coordination to ensure the project’s timely completion. The new school is situated on a 6.5-acre lot and includes seven structural steel-framed buildings with plaster exteriors. The buildings house 32 classrooms, a multi-purpose room, library/media center, cafeteria, and administrative spaces. The campus also encompasses outdoor play areas and sports fields.
