“This is our third project with McCarthy. It’s easily the most complex, and we’re confident we’ve got a great team.”

In line with the university’s goal of LEED Silver certification, McCarthy is recycling a significant amount of all construction waste at the new Education & Social Sciences Buildings complex.

Local suppliers and a variety of recycled-content building materials are also being utilized. Three buildings (totaling $83 million) are included in the complex: a 4-story, 96,000-square-foot College of Arts and Sciences; a 4-story 97,000-square-foot Graduate School for Education; and a 2-story, 15,500-square-foot Center for Film, Television and New Media. The latter structure is by far the most complex, including a variety of state-of-the-art video production equipment and a 298-seat film theatre and sound stage. All three are steel-framed and include plaster and glass exteriors. A full-scale mock-up was built to ensure that all components of the exterior skin performed as expected. Previously, McCarthy built two parking structures totaling 1,690 spaces and more than 735,000 square feet at UCSB. Architect: Kallmann McKinnell & Wood Architects, Boston.
