SHARE

McCarthy has joined with Westcoast Roof Consulting of Costa Mesa to assemble a group of subcontractors and suppliers to help reroof the Laguna Beach Community Clinic (LBCC). Altogether, the group is expected to donate approximately $35,000 in construction materials and services to complete this project. LBCC provides a full scope of primary care services to the underserved in this area and is one of only two community clinics in south Orange County.  Dr. Korey Jorgensen, a physician at LBCC for more than 35 years, is spearheading the building effort for the clinic.

The project which began on March 4, 2008 and is expected to complete by March 18, 2008 entails demolition and reconstruction of a 2,000-square-foot, low-sloped roof. Construction workers are also adding a layer of roofing insulation and single-ply membrane to comply with state of California Energy Efficiency Standards. Additional work includes the readjustment of plumbing drains and the repair of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment.

“Our clinic building is over 45 years old and our roof is approaching 20 years of age. We are in desperate need of a new roof,” said Dr. Thomas C. Bent, Medical Director and COO of the Clinic.  “We are indebted to Laguna Beach residents Patrick Peterson, project director for McCarthy and Mark Curry, principal of Westcoast Roof Consulting who both helped drive the effort to restore our aging roof, as well as all of the other generous companies who are helping with this effort. Through their support, we can ensure a safe environment in which we continue to provide the unmet healthcare needs of Laguna Beach and the greater community.”

The roof repair of the LBCC service project was initiated by McCarthy Heart Hats, a volunteer community outreach group led by the employees of McCarthy Building Companies.  The McCarthy Heart Hats community involvement program is dedicated to encouraging, supporting and recognizing McCarthy employees’ volunteer efforts in a variety of causes to ensure real needs are being met in communities where employees work, live and play.

All of the contractors and subcontractors involved in the LBCC roof repair project are experienced healthcare builders that are currently building the Mission Hospital Patient Care Tower in Mission Viejo. Other notable healthcare projects in Orange County being built or recently completed by McCarthy include the St. Joseph Hospital Cancer Center, medical office building and parking structure; the St. Joseph Hospital Patient Care Center and the Sue & Bill Gross Women’s Pavilion at Hoag Hospital.

“McCarthy is fortunate enough to provide healthcare construction services to many large and prestigious healthcare institutions in Orange County, so helping the Laguna Beach Community Clinic repair and upgrade their facility is a great way to use our construction expertise to give back to our community,” said McCarthy Project Director Patrick Peterson.

“We are deeply grateful to McCarthy and their colleagues in the building industry for this wonderful gift to our Clinic,” said Dr. Korey Jorgensen.  “It is one of the most significant gifts in our history and means so much to us in our ability to continue our mission to this community.”

LBCC has been an integral part of Laguna Beach and surrounding communities for 37 years, presenting a full scope of primary care services to the underserved in this area.  In addition, care in selected specialties is provided by part-time volunteer physicians.  LBCC logs more than 16,000 patient visits annually.

Affordable, accessible healthcare remains one of the nation’s most difficult and challenging issues.  Community clinics, like LBCC, take on increased importance as more and more people find themselves without a job and health benefits.   Laguna Beach Community Clinic provides a vital healthcare safety net for those individuals and the entire community.
