McCarthy Tops Out on the Roy and Patricia Disney Cancer Center

With the final placement of a signed beam, McCarthy has completed construction of the steel structure for the Roy and Patricia Disney Cancer Center.  Located at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, Calif., the $21.8 million facility will be the San Fernando Valley’s most comprehensive free-standing cancer center when it opens in summer 2009.

The four-story, 57,469-square-foot center will enhance Providence Saint Joseph’s existing cancer program, which is nationally recognized for its leading diagnostic and treatment services, as well as its high patient survival rates.  The new, integrated center will provide access to a combination of Western and Eastern medicine.  Services will include oncology, hematology, pathology, rehabilitation, nutrition, social services and spiritual care.

McCarthy is building the facility with a moment frame structure in order to withstand seismic events.  This construction is challenging due to the tight site; the building is only eight inches away from an existing parking structure on two sides.

Other noteworthy construction aspects include the three-foot-thick walls that will surround two linear accelerators and one tomography suite, as well as the construction of a cooling system with thermal storage tanks, which produces ice at night and then uses the ice as a chilled water source during peak daytime cooling hours.

Designed by SWA Architects of Pasadena, Calif., the center will include several nature-based elements—a two-story glass waterfall in the lobby, exterior fountains and a rooftop meditative labyrinth—to assist in healing.  The exterior of the center will consist of a combination of stucco and metal panels with dual-pane glazing to add visual interest.

The project is being funded through private donations, including a $10 million gift from Roy and Patricia Disney, who are lifetime residents of Burbank and adjacent Toluca Lake.
