McCarthy prides itself on being a community builder. Chances are you have heard stories about ‘when McCarthy comes into a community it becomes part of the community.’ That was the case on a Saturday in April when a group of McCarthy employees took part in Rebuilding Together – St. Louis. A team headed up by Midwest Estimators braved the elements and took on the task of rebuilding a home in North St. Louis County.
By the time the crew was finished the home had a fresh coat of paint on the walls and ceilings in several rooms, new landscaping, new trim on the outside of the house, a new exterior basement door, a new interior wall in the basement along with some paneling, a new screen on the back porch and other minor repairs.
“It is a great organization to get involved with,” states Mike Bax, Midwest Estimating Preconstruction Director. “This is a great example of what McCarthy does company wide. It makes you feel good to help someone in need. It’s more than just one day of work – working with the homeowner several days to a month in advance. It is fun to work with the homeowner and just real satisfying at the end of the day.”
Rebuilding Together was founded on a national level in 1973. It started with five homes and 105 volunteers. Today, the organization operates with 235 affiliates, works in 1,800 communities, and brings together more than 272,000 volunteers annually to preserve and revitalize 10,000 houses and non-profit facilities. Nationally, Rebuilding Together has delivered over $100 million dollars in market value.
The first project in St. Louis was in 1993. McCarthy has been involved with Rebuilding Together – St. Louis since 1998.
The goal behind the organization is to revitalize neighborhoods in partnership with the community by rehabilitating the houses of low-income homeowners, particularly the elderly and the disabled, so that they may continue to live independently in comfort and safety.
