The 85,000-square-foot East Campus Research Facility (ECRF) at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., consolidates 60 different holding facilities and vivariums on the Cornell campus and is a key part of the University’s New Life Sciences Initiative.

The facility, which houses 45,000 transgenic mice and other small animals, contains 38 holding rooms, 12 transgenic suites, avian research chambers, and eight BSL-3 rooms. Its flexible design will accommodate changes in research activities, animal species and in animal populations, as well as future program expansion. The structure itself is unique among buildings of its type and is designed as an introverted block, allowing occupant traffic to move at the window-clad perimeter. Architect: Ballinger, Philadelphia, Penn.
