“McCarthy’s ability to perform major coordination and construction feats, overcome unforeseen obstacles, and deliver projects on time and within budget made them the natural choice to build the project.”
—Tim Jacoby, vice president, facilities, Rady Children’s Hospital

Erecting a hand-troweled, simulated rock nail wall measuring 500 feet wide and up to 50 feet tall was a feat the McCarthy team took in stride when constructing the new 332,279-square-foot, design-build parking structure for Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego.

The top-level podium of the $25.7 million structure, built into the hillside, also had to be engineered to support the planned new Ronald McDonald House. Collaborating with the architect, McCarthy prepped the site by installing more than 600 plumbing sleeves; beams and girders twice the normal size; a high bay condition; a flat, non-ramped surface; and super congested, post-tension concrete reinforcing. Further testing the team, raging fires broke out in San Diego the day the structure was to receive power forcing a three-week hold on any new service installation. By leaving the fire/life safety pre-testing, testing and inspections for very last and obtaining all other city sign-offs prior, the McCarthy team was able to turn over the parking structure more than a month earlier than scheduled.
