McCarthy Completes $170 Million Huntington Memorial Hospital West Tower

McCarthy, one of Southern California’s preeminent healthcare builders, has completed its fourth major project for Huntington Memorial Hospital three months ahead of schedule. The $170 million, 237,734-square-foot West Tower, designed by HDR Inc. of Pasadena, Calif., is the final phase of the hospital’s master planned development.

According to Steven Mynsberge, executive vice president and director of healthcare services for McCarthy, the West Tower is the final phase of a rebuilding plan that was outlined in 1986.

“McCarthy has had the pleasure of working with Huntington Memorial Hospital since the inception of its rebuilding efforts more than 18 years ago,” Mynsberge said.

The culmination of the rebuilding is the six-story tower, composed of 128 private patient care rooms, including 32 acute care beds; a pharmacy; a cafeteria; and an expanded clinical laboratory. In addition to the West Tower, McCarthy completed structural upgrades on the existing lobby, patient bridge and pedestrian tunnel in compliance with Senate Bill 1953, which requires seismic upgrades for all acute care facilities.

Due to the project’s location adjacent to an existing lobby building, McCarthy was faced with constant challenges relating to building on a ‘live project site.’ By facilitating cooperation and open communication between the hospital’s staff, the Office of Statewide Health Planning & Development (OSHPD) and construction workers, McCarthy was able to keep the project on track and ultimately finish early.

In addition to keeping the lines of communication open during construction, McCarthy also took steps to ensure that air quality controls were upheld and made an effort to reduce construction noise.

During its two decades of work on the Huntington Memorial Hospital campus, McCarthy has constructed a 125,000-square-foot, four-story vertical patient tower expansion and heliport, completed in November 1998; the remodel and renovation of the 53,500-square-foot blood donor center, psychiatric facility and sleep lab, completed in October 1992; and a 165,000-square-foot replacement hospital and 750-space parking garage, completed in December 1990.
