The Northern Pacific Division of McCarthy kicked off the 2010 holiday season by giving back to our respective communities.
In Sacramento, 50 McCarthy volunteers rallied together to assist the local Ronald McDonald House with some much-needed repair. A member of the local community since 1998, the Sacramento facility provides a “home away from home” for families who have children being treated in one of five Sacramento hospitals, including: UC Davis Medical Center, Shriner’s Hospitals for Children, Mercy, Kaiser Permanente, and Sutter Medical Center.
A Saturday was dedicated to painting the exterior of the building, repairing and staining several wood trellises and fences, removing several tree roots that had damaged concrete walkways, and repairing and replacing those damaged walkways. Additionally, volunteers leveled bricks in the courtyard, fixed sprinklers, and landscaped the south end of the parking lot, as well as performed miscellaneous cleanup work around the facility. In addition to the McCarthy volunteers, several subcontractors and suppliers dedicated time and resources, including Valley Crest Landscaping, BK Ball Construction, and Syar Concrete.
“Wow! is the first word that comes to mind when I think of McCarthy and your volunteer day at the Sacramento Ronald McDonald House,” said House Manager Lois Polaschek of the Sacramento Ronald McDonald House. “As I watched people arrive and immediately get to work, I was so impressed. I got goose bumps. The attitude of helping out and making a difference was prevalent as were the abundance of smiles and good cheer. As a group, you excel. As individuals, you inspire. Together, you are the best of the best!”
In San Francisco, the Tel-Hi Neighborhood Center, which serves 600 people a day through its preschool, three after-school enrichment programs, and senior programs, received some much needed “TLC” thanks to McCarthy’s San Francisco volunteers. More than 30 McCarthy employees, as well as several local subcontractors and suppliers, dedicated a Saturday to participate in our annual McCarthy San Francisco Community Day. The team of volunteers restored, rejuvenated and refreshed the center, which included building a new and enlarged sandbox, painting benches and planter boxes, installing a new basketball hoop, repairing dry-rotted stairway landings and handrails that had become a hazard, general cleanup of the facility, hauling off unused items, and completing tree trimming and irrigation work.
According to Nestor Fernandez, executive director of Tel-Hi, “First and foremost, I want to thank McCarthy for their work at Tel-Hi. The sandbox, basketball hoop, and garden look awesome….I can’t tell you how happy you made everyone when they came in after the weekend and saw all of the great work that you did. Thank you 100 times over!”
Subcontractors and suppliers participating included Park West Landscaping, Arborwell, Level Construction Supply, Channel Lumber, Custom Painting Inc., and Sunset Debris Box Service/Golden Gate Debris Box Service.
