Honors & Awards
McCarthy's goal — a never-ending one, by the way — is to be The Best Builder in America. Every year we take time to recognize and reward employees who through their work on deserving projects have helped propel us toward that goal.
Below are the internal team awards we bestow to those outstanding projects. The dedication and commitment of our employee owners has also earned us outside recognition for our achievements.

Internal Awards
The Roger Burnet Award
The Roger Burnet Award, established in honor of our 6th President, is presented each year to one Melvin Award winner and its staff that embodies the very finest in integrity, personal service and commitment to quality — qualities which we believe differentiate us from other respected builders.
2005 Winner
Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian's Sue and Bill Gross Women's Pavilion – Newport Beach, California
A $132 million, 320,000-sf tower, construction of the Sue and Bill Gross Women's Pavilion set a new standard for hospital building in California. It's the first OSHPD tower with a steel moment frame (with 54 base isolators which allow the entire structure to move laterally in the event of seismic activity.) Surrounded by a fully operational hospital, safety was paramount -- with the project earning a .99 recordable incident rate with zero-lost time accidents. Despite severe weather and the need to process 1,300 IBs and 3,000 RFIs, the project completed 60 calendar days ahead of schedule. In addition to the "Roger" the project has earned numerous industry awards since completion (including the national AGC Build America award).
2004 Winner
Boeing Company Hornet Facility – St. Louis, Missouri
Immediately adjacent to Lambert St. Louis International Airport's main runway, the project site for this $112 million facility lost 8 days to presidential visits, 52 weather days and 48 days of no crane usage because of FAA-mandated shutdowns. Despite that, the 230,000-sf project was completed on time – and completed with ZERO recordables after completing more than 250,000 manhours of self-perfomed labor.
2003 Winner
Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport Terminal D – Dallas, Texas
Overcoming significant design changes and the many security-mandated aftereffects of 9/11, the McCarthy team developed innovative gantry and drive aisle processes, made qualityand safety the highest priorities, and created an on-going training program for the project staff – all while keeping this $18 million addition to the new International Terminal D on track and on budget. McCarthy's portion of the project involved the construction of the concrete superstructure which supports the automated people mover system connecting Terminal D to the rest of the airport.
2002 Winner
Donald Danforth Plant Science Center — St. Louis, Missouri
The centerpiece of the St. Louis area's goal of becoming the nation's “biobelt”, the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center is a $57 million, 174,000-sf research facility. The project team contended with and overcame major communication challenges (the lead architect was in London, and the structural and electrical engineers were in San Francisco), while ensuring the punchlist was completed within 60 days on this highly complex project.
Sam Fiorello, the Center's senior vice president for administration and finance, sums its up best when he commented: “to construct a world-class research facility, we called upon a world-class builder.”
2001 Winner
Pueblo of Sandia Casino — Albuquerque, NM
Designed and constructed to reflect the vision and culture of the Pueblo of Sandia, the 210,000-square-foot Pueblo of Sandia Casino was completed on schedule and on budget, despite its fast-track schedule. Complete with an outdoor amphitheater, fine dining areas and a 950-car underground parking structure, this facility is the largest Native American casino in New Mexico.
As Pueblo of Sandia Project Manager Robert Martinez put it, “If there's a better company than McCarthy around, I'm sure not aware of them. A simply outstanding job in every aspect.”
2000 Winner
Disneyland Resort West Parking Structure — Anaheim, CA
Building the nation's largest parking structure at “The Happiest Place on Earth” was no walk in the park. The emphasis was on big! The structure is approximately 3.75 million square feet and has space for 10,242 cars. With direct access to an adjacent freeway, the six-level structure includes two of the largest clear-span escalators ever built and an innovative, mirror-like “as cast” architectural concrete finish that you can literally see yourself in.
Internal Awards
The Iron Mike Award
Named in honor of Michael M. McCarthy, the great grandson of company founder Timothy McCarthy, this annual award is presented to the McCarthy division judged to be the best over a number of criteria including safety results, people development efforts and community involvement. In 1976, Mike became president of the company, and soon after McCarthy began its ascent to national prominence in healthcare construction management, as well as becoming the nation’s largest design/build parking structure builder. An entrepreneur at heart, he assumed the position of chairman of the board in 1984 and led McCarthy’s expansion into semiconductor, biopharmaceutical, educational, R&D and general manufacturing markets, with the company becoming a major player in each. In 2002, as the final McCarthy family member in company management, Mike sold his majority ownership interest in the firm to the employees making McCarthy one of the largest 100% employee owned construction firms in the nation
