Alkek Hospital Expansion in Houston as the region’s Overall Best Project. Completed by the Texas Division of McCarthy in 2011, the Alkek Hospital expansion project was chosen out of more than 100 project entries in 17 categories to win the best overall title. The project is now entered into ENR’s national competition to select the nation’s top project.

ENR Texas & Louisiana selected winning projects based on overcoming significant challenges, displaying quality design and construction, adopting innovative approaches and maintaining a safe work site. The vertical hospital expansion project was one of McCarthy’s most intensive healthcare expansions to date, challenging the firm to find solutions for immediate and long-lead item deliveries, strict quality control requirements, site constraints, infection control and minimizing interruptions to existing hospital operations.

“McCarthy is proud to be part of the design-build team that successfully constructed the Alkek Hospital expansion project amidst a myriad of challenges” said Ben Johanneman, McCarthy project director. “We continue to use the lessons learned from this project and build upon this project knowledge in much of our other work. Its successful completion has led us to a remarkable ongoing relationship with MD Anderson.”

McCarthy was initially hired in early 2007 to deliver preconstruction and construction services for the 12-story vertical expansion to the existing 12-story Alkek Hospital. Working with design partner HKS, Inc., the team constructed this $240 million design-build project over the next three years, finishing ahead of schedule and on budget. The completed project added five inpatient floors, three shell floors, a pharmacy, a facilities floor, a mechanical floor and an observation deck. The facility remained fully operational during construction, and the expansion floors were opened for patient and staff use in January 2011.

McCarthy adds the Overall Best Project Award to a growing list of other business and industry-based awards the firm has received for its work on the project, including being honored for a 2011 Build America Award in the Design-Build Renovation category from Associated General Contractors of America (AGC)/Aon, and a 2010 Safety Through Exemplary Performance (STEP) Gold Award from MD Anderson. Not only did McCarthy’s project secure the coveted Overall Best Project award for the Texas and Louisiana region, but it also ranked as the Best Healthcare Project in the region. The complete list of this year’s award winners can be found in the December edition of ENR Texas & Louisiana or at http://texas.construction.com/.

Soka University of America’s new Soka Performing Arts Center and Academic Building project, which opened in September 2011, recently received Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). The Soka Performing Arts Center, which is located on 1.9 acres of the Soka University campus in Aliso Viejo, serves as a venue in South Orange County for concerts, theater productions, lectures and assemblies, furthering Soka University’s role as a cultural center and community gathering place.

“One of Soka University’s guiding principals is to foster leaders for the creative coexistence of nature and humanity, and the Soka Performing Arts Center project demonstrates this socially responsible ideal to our students,” said Arch Asawa, Soka University’s Vice President for Finance and Administration and CFO. “We deeply appreciate the project team for helping us meet our objective to create a world-class LEED Gold Certified facility.”

McCarthy served as general contractor and Zimmer Gunsul Frasca was the architect for the $73 million project, which included construction of a three-level, 47,836-square-foot Soka Performing Arts Center housing a reception lobby, various support spaces and a 1,000-seat auditorium. McCarthy also built a 48,974-square-footAcademicBuildingwhich is located next to and provides support for the Soka Performing Arts Center. The new four-level academic building houses 11 classrooms, 29 faculty offices, a 150-seat black box theater, four dressing rooms, a rehearsal/dance studio, musician warm-up spaces and other support areas.

To successfully address the LEED aspects of the project, the design and construction team employed 15 LEED accredited professionals, and McCarthy used sustainable construction methods throughout the project. These included: recycling approximately 75 percent of construction waste; maintaining proper indoor air quality; utilizing local labor and ensuring that the subcontractors install the specified “green” materials.

Likewise, the design of these structures incorporates numerous sustainable and energy efficiency solutions. TheSokaPerformingArtsCenterand theAcademicBuildingboth have a green roof and solar panels. The green roof holds three to four inches of soil filled with succulent plants providing sound insulation as well as insulation for heating and cooling. It also absorbs rain water to filter it before it goes into theWoodCanyonwatershed, and it converts carbon dioxide to oxygen. Additionally, a bioswale was built to help manage storm water runoff.

In order to create a space large enough for the green roof with a combination of vegetation and photovoltaic panels arrays as part of the sunshades, the project’s electrical contractor utilized design/build delivery to meet the project’s complex electrical needs. BIM 3D modeling was implemented to successfully coordinate paths and spacing requirements and to improved collaboration with all of the MEP trades. Furthermore, energy modeling simulations were performed, which showed an overall energy cost savings of about 25% over the baseline. To that end, the 140 kW photovoltaic system generates an estimated 15% of the energy needed.

Further energy efficiency solutions included operable windows for climate control in the academic building as well as sensor-controlled lights that turn themselves off in unused rooms. Automatic daylight responsive dimmable lighting controls were installed in all classrooms and both black-box and the Center’s lobbies. A displacement ventilation system was utilized to supply cooler air near the floor, pushing warmer air away from occupants in academic and performance hall spaces.

The Soka Performing Arts Center’s exterior features a glass sunshade structure with 570 panes of laminated safety glass to permit visibility, yet diffuse light and reduce solar heat-gain in the large, all glass lobby. The performance hall also features adjustable floor diffusers below most seats, allowing audience members to adjust airflow. Water-saving features employed include low-flow water fixtures and high-efficiency instantaneous gas water heaters.

Other project team members included Program Manager R.W. Buck and Associates of Rancho Santa Margarita; JAMA of Los Angeles, structural engineer; RBF of Irvine, civil engineer; Syska of Los Angeles, electrical and mechanical engineer; and SWA of Laguna Beach, landscape architect.

“TheSokaUniversityproject team was focused on sustainability from day one and worked hard to make this goal a reality,” explained McCarthy Executive Vice President Mark Mardock. “McCarthy continues to position ourselves as a leader in green construction, and this project is an outstanding example. With this latest certification, McCarthy now has 10 LEED Gold projects on our resume, with more than 20 in the works. In total, McCarthy has completed or underway more than $7 billion in sustainable projects overall.”

The TORCH Award honors excellence in customer service, employee relations and ethical business practices. McCarthy President and Chief Operating Officer Derek Glanvill accepted the award during the ceremony.

“Founded as a small family-owned company in 1864, McCarthy’s long history has been built on the solid values of integrity, trust and an open approach to doing business,” explained Glanvill. “Today, we’ve grown into one of the largest construction companies in America. But, even though times have changed, our guiding principles have not. Being honored with this TORCH Award confirms the principles that guided our builders nearly 150 years ago are still just as relevant today.”

Timothy McCarthy originally founded the company in Ann Arbor, Mich., as a lumber business. His sons moved the firm to St. Louis in 1917, where it has grown into one of the nation’s premier commercial builders known for safely solving the most complex construction challenges. The company became 100 percent employee-owned in 2002, when Michael M. McCarthy, the last significant family shareholder, sold his shares to employees.

“Our ownership culture fosters a level of commitment and dedication that we believe translates directly into world-class customer service,” continued Glanvill. “While we utilize the most sophisticated technology tools in the business, ultimately our reputation is built on how we treat one another – our McCarthy family, clients, industry partners and neighbors in the community. We think that’s what being a true builder is all about.”

With 2010 revenues of $2.5 billion, McCarthy has approximately 1,500 salaried employees across America. In the St. Louis metro area, McCarthy, together with MC Industrial, an independent McCarthy company, has completed work in a variety of market sectors including healthcare, education, commercial, science & technology, industrial, transportation and power. Currently, the firm has more than $500 million in work underway in the region.

McCarthy is the eleventh recipient of the top TORCH Award in the St. Louis region. Former recipients of the award include: Anheuser-Busch Companies, Brown Shoe Corp., Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Monsanto and United Van Lines.

McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. one of the nation’s oldest and largest privately-held construction companies and a 100 percent employee-owned business, was honored last week with a 2011 Education Excellence Award from the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC).

Presented during the AGC Training, Education & Development Conference in Kansas City, the Education Excellence Awards recognize the most innovative and collaborative training and development programs in the construction industry. McCarthy was honored in the category of Supervisor-Executive Management for the firm’s Foundations of Leadership Training Program. This AGC award comes on the heels of McCarthy’s placement on the prestigious 2011 Training Magazine Top 125 list and recognition by Corporate University Xchange for training excellence and innovation earlier this year.

“The key to building great projects is building great professionals,” said AGC President Kristine Young. “McCarthy’s leadership training program is an example of how to turn tremendous talent into outstanding professionals.”

Founded as a family-owned business almost 150 years ago, McCarthy is one of the largest 100% employee-owned companies with an Employee Stock Ownership Plan in America today. The firm has long fostered a culture dedicated to continuous improvement, and “Learning” represents one of McCarthy’s six company Core Values.

“McCarthy transitioned from family to employee ownership in 2002,” explained McCarthy Chairman and CEO Mike Bolen. “This significant shift, together with a combination of company growth and retirements of a number of long-time leaders, resulted in our need to more aggressively prepare our high-potential employees for growth. The opportunities at McCarthy are vast and varied, and training these future leaders is an exciting part of our continuing success.”

The McCarthy Foundations of Leadership Program was designed to accelerate the advancement of high performers by challenging them early in their career to take charge of their own development through an orchestrated “peek behind the curtain” at the unique issues faced by the leaders of a multi-billion dollar general contractor. This fast-track approach was also designed to challenge these employees, keep them fully engaged in the company and heighten the overall level of professionalism in the industry.

“Our senior leadership is 100% behind the development of future leaders at McCarthy and actively participate in our Foundations program as instructors,” noted McCarthy Vice President of Human Resources Al Berardi. “We have invested an incredible amount of time to create an active learning experience that is both challenging and meaningful. To be honored by our national association for our efforts is especially meaningful.”

About the Associated General Contractors of America
The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) is the leading association for the construction industry. Operating in partnership with its nationwide network of Chapters, the AGC provides a full range of services satisfying the needs and concerns of its members, thereby improving the quality of construction and protecting the public interest.
About McCarthy
McCarthy is one of the nation’s oldest and largest domestic general contractors. The award honors McCarthy’s use of innovative technologies to conduct everyday business and recognizes Bluebeam for enabling the construction company to achieve its goals.

Bluebeam is a leading developer of smart, simple PDF solutions for the architecture, engineering and construction industries. McCarthy, one of the premier commercial builders in the U.S., uses Bluebeam’s flagship product, Bluebeam PDF Revu, to hyperlink PDF documents for better access to information such as drawing details, specifications and RFIs. The documents are then made available on a custom McCarthy jobsite kiosk via a wireless connection for instant access by all jobsite personnel to the most updated information to improve project communication and management.

“McCarthy is always looking for innovative ways to improve our processes and deliver better results for our clients,” said Mike Oster, McCarthy Vice President, Information Technology. “We wanted to prove that project record drawings could be easily updated, maintained and distributed electronically in lieu of traditional hand posting methods, which are labor intensive, inefficient and often difficult to duplicate. By taking this access out of the trailer and into the field we are also able to give all field personnel real-time access to this critical information. We are pleased with the successful outcome of these efforts and are honored to be recognized by the industry with this Vision Award.”

Constructech magazine honored all of the Vision Award winners on September 14th during its annual Technology Day conference in Oakbrook Terrace, IL. Companies eligible for the honors were involved in residential, commercial, and heavy construction, and also included professionals in all trades, architectural and engineering firms, corporate owners, facility management companies, government agencies, and land developers.

“Bluebeam PDF Revu gives companies the tools to manage a project more efficiently, as well as save time and money,” said Stephani Haynes, Bluebeam’s Director of Worldwide Marketing. “We are honored to be recognized as industry innovators and we are pleased to have contributed to McCarthy’s success.”

McCarthy’s Unified Plant Expansion (UP05B) project located at 91st Avenue in Phoenix was recently named the recipient of the “Public Works Project of the Year” in the Environment category by the American Public Works Association (APWA) — Arizona Chapter.

The UP05B expansion project, a 25.5 million gallon per day wastewater treatment plant, was also sent to APWA National to compete for the National Public Works Project of the Year. The APWA Arizona Chapter presented the award to the project team at its 2011 Statewide Conference on August 9, 2011 at the Phoenix Convention Center. The award recognizes excellence in the partnership between the contractor, engineer and managing agency in working together to complete public works projects.

“We’re honored that this project has been recognized as the Public Works Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association Arizona Chapter,” said Shawn Ingram, McCarthy project director. “Working together with Malcolm Pirnie and the city of Phoenix, we created a one-team approach that allowed us not only to eliminate waste in project operations, but also develop a dynamic solution. The fact that it is now being considered for the national award is a testament to this true collaboration.”

The UP05B expansion project was initiated in 2005 as a five-city Sub-Regional Operating Group (SROG) agreement led by the city of Phoenix. It is an “end of line” facility for influent wastewater processing serving Phoenix, Tempe, Glendale, Scottsdale and Mesa. The new facility, which increases the capacity for processing influent wastewater, used the Construction Management at Risk delivery method for the $106 million project and was completed under budget and earlier than expected.

Major aspects of the facility expansion included construction of grit influent and effluent channels, additional bar screen and grit cyclone and washers, a state-of-the-art odor control facility, construction of two primary and two secondary sediment basins and along with process air blowers for two new aeration basins. The facility also received an expanded polymer building and chemical distribution enhancements.

“The level of coordination and communication by McCarthy on UP05B allowed for a large amount of work to be completed with minimal impact upon operations of the facility,” said Rick Shane, construction project manager for the city of Phoenix. “The advanced planning also afforded plant staff to continue with scheduled maintenance activities, as well as save money for our residents, a vital concern in these tough economic times.”

Construction of the project involved more than 500,000 man hours of labor over 2.5 years, peaking with 230 craft personnel on site per day. McCarthy performed 258,000 man hours without a single recordable incident and the overall project’s recordable rate for the entire workforce was below .80.

Less than a year after McCarthy completed construction on California State University, Sacramento’s The WELL project, the 151,000-square-foot recreation and wellness center has surpassed its original goal of LEED Silver certification and has been awarded LEED Gold status.

“We were committed to building the facility in the most environmentally-friendly way that aligned with the university’s vision for the project,” said Mark Radell, McCarthy’s project director. “All project partners collaborated on improving its sustainability from design through construction, and we are proud that our steadfast efforts resulted in a LEED Gold rating.”

The McCarthy team advised on ways to improve the facility’s sustainability during the construction process and utilized sophisticated, cutting-edge technology to deliver a long list of green building features. Among The WELL’s sustainable components are skylight systems to boost thermal properties; design elements to increase day lighting, high-efficiency HVAC systems; emphasis on light pollution reductions; enhanced commissioning and sustainably harvested formaldehyde-free wood products; and access to alternative transportation facilities, including bicycle parking and proximity to a nearby light rail system.

“We are very pleased with how The WELL project team pursued our plan, listened to the stakeholders, and executed what is the most ambitious construction projects in Sacramento State history — all while surpassing LEED expectations,” said Mario Ruiz, interim associate vice president of facilities services at Sacramento State. “McCarthy has earned a reputation as one of the country’s leading green construction companies, and this project has certainly reaffirmed that.”

In terms of overall environmental footprint, the building is projected to use 23 percent less energy than a typical new building, 43 percent less water than a typical new building, and its construction used 25 percent recycled content materials, and diverted 82 percent of the total waste generated from going to a landfill. In reference to wood on the project, 70 percent of wood purchased was FSC certified as sustainably harvested, meaning that the forest where the trees were taken from has its ecological health protected during wood harvesting — the wood is not from clear cutting or other destructive forestry practices.

The WELL offers a broad spectrum of programs and facilities, including a 29-foot rock climbing wall and a bouldering wall, an indoor track, four full size basketball courts, a multi-athletic court, four racquetball courts, a student health center, fitness, bike and outdoor adventure shops, and the Fresh Made Café.

About McCarthy
McCarthy is one of the nation’s oldest and largest privately held commercial construction companies. More than a decade ago, McCarthy formalized a national in-house green knowledge network to capture and build upon the best green practices across the country. Today, McCarthy is among the top green construction companies in America. McCarthy is 100 percent employee owned.

McCarthy NM recently received top honors from the Associated General Contractors (AGC)-New Mexico when its membership voted McCarthy NM as the Industry Choice for “Outstanding General Contractor” at its 22nd annual awards gala. The firm was also recognized by the AGC–NM with two “Best Building” awards for excellence in construction. The projects honored as “Best Buildings” are the University of New Mexico Science and Math Learning Center and the University of New Mexico — Yale Parking Garage.

The AGC-NM names Industry Choice Award winners through a vote by the group’s membership. Industry Choice Award recipients are recognized for their pursuit of best practices in (1) approach to conducting business, (2) dealings with customers, clients, employees, and peers, and (3) quality performance with respect to products and/or services. McCarthy NM earned highest honors with the Outstanding General Contractor award in this category. AGC-NM also awards “Best Building” projects, which are judged and awarded based upon the complexity of the construction process, and project challenges, such as budget, site constraints, schedule, and project delivery method. This year, the awards gala also served as a benefit to the ACE Leadership High School – the acclaimed cutting-edge charter school founded by AGC-NM Building Branch as well as future leaders of the industry and the NM community.

“We are honored and humbled to be named Industry Choice Outstanding General Contractor by the AGC-NM,” said Dennis Tucker, executive VP of McCarthy NM. “This recognition by other contractors in New Mexico, along with two Best Building awards, reinforces our commitment to doing all we can to build a strong community in New Mexico.

“It’s also a point of pride for McCarthy NM to support the ACE Leadership High School, which assists in developing our future industry and community leaders,” added Jaime Garrido, director of client services for McCarthy NM.

The $15 million Science and Math Learning Center at the University of New Mexico (UNM) main campus in Albuquerque won first place in the “Best Buildings” – $10-$20 million category. The Center completes the transformation of the University’s western boundary, and serves as a gateway to the technological heart of the campus. The design of the 62,000-square-foot building unites the previously scattered mathematics department and integrates technology-rich chemistry and biology classrooms with a 200-seat auditorium, a visualization lab, “smart” classrooms, distance learning facilities, and a café. The integration of sustainable design and construction strategies positions the project to achieve LEED for Schools Gold from the U.S. Green Building Council.

The $12.8 million Yale Parking Garage, a state-of-the-art parking facility that added more than 780 parking spaces to the University of New Mexico’s main campus, was named runner-up in the same category (Best Building $10-$20 million). The six-story structure includes a pedestrian bridge from the third floor of the garage, providing direct access to the campus. Additionally, the top floor of the parking structure features a 180 kW photovoltaic solar array comprised of 840 individual panels that generate electricity for the university.

Other significant projects McCarthy NM has been involved with include: Presbyterian Rio Rancho (Rust) Medical Center; Presbyterian Main Campus East expansion, ER renovation, multiple floor renovations, and the addition of Rachel’s Courtyard; Hobbs Freshman High School; Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort and Spa; New Mexico State University Arts Complex; Sandia Resort & Casino; Upper Fruitland Casino Water Treatment Plant, and numerous schools across the state.

McCarthy. was recognized by the AZ Water Association for two of the firm’s water projects in the city of Phoenix. The Unified Plant Expansion (UP05B) Project earned the “Wastewater Project of the Year,” and the Deer Valley Water Treatment Plant – East Basin Reconstruction Project was named “Water Project of the Year.”
The UP05B expansion project, a 25.5 million gallon per day wastewater treatment plant, is located at 91st Avenue in Tolleson, and the Deer Valley Water Treatment Plant – East Basin Reconstruction Project, a $120 million expansion, is located at Dunlap and 30th Avenues in Phoenix. The AZ Water Association presented the award to the project teams at the association’s annual AZ Water conference held on May 4. The awards recognize excellence in wastewater and water projects completed between March 2010 and March 2011 that include outstanding and innovative features.

“We’re honored to have two of our projects named as Project of the Year by the AZ Water Association,” said Robert Knochenhauer, vice president and business unit leader of McCarthy’s Water Services team. “Working together with Malcolm Pirnie and the city of Phoenix on the UP05B project, we created a one-team approach that allowed us not only to eliminate waste in project operations but also develop dynamic solutions that are customized to this project. With the Deer Valley reconstruction project, working with Wilson Engineers and the city of Phoenix we successfully advanced and streamlined the facility’s treatment process, both on-time and on-budget.”

The new facility, which increases the capacity for processing influent water and returning the water, used the Construction Management at Risk delivery method for the $106 million project and was completed under budget and earlier than expected.

Major aspects of the facility expansion included construction of grit influent and effluent channels, additional bar screen and grit cyclone and washers, a state-of-the-art odor control facility, construction of two primary and two secondary sediment basins and the construction of aeration basins and a process blower for odor control. The facility also received chlorinator and ejector for Norcardia control, ferric chloride storage and piping.

“The level of coordination by McCarthy on UP05B allowed for a large amount of work to be completed with minimal impact upon operations of the facility,” said Rick Shane, city of Phoenix construction project manager. “The advanced planning also afforded plant staff to continue with scheduled maintenance activities, as well as save money for our residents, a vital concern in these tough economic times.”

The Deer Valley Water Treatment Plant – East Basin Reconstruction Project (DVWTP), expanded the facility’s treatment capacity from 75 million gallons per day (MGD) to 100 MGD and included installation of advanced treatment processes, equipment and basins, as well as sand ballasted flocculation and GAC filter absorbers. The team held steadfast to the schedule and budget, completing the project on time and within budget.

“McCarthy was instrumental in the seamless reconstruction of this facility,” said Troy Hayes, water quality administrator for the city of Phoenix. “This team was a true testament to what a cohesive partnership is capable of. I attribute the overall success of the project to focus and streamlined process they implemented.”
