The 23nd annual McCarthy Heart Hats Charity Golf Classic was held Fri., Dec. 9, at the We-Ko-Pa Golf Club in Fort McDowell, Ariz. The annual golf tournament raises funds for McCarthy Heart Hats grant awardees and this year, the Heart Hats committee selected Family Promise of Greater Phoenix and Angels on Patrol as recipients of the 2011 McCarthy Heart Hats grants. Each organization received $20,000.

“Once again, our Heart Hats committee wanted to focus on nonprofits that support children and families experiencing dramatic economic need,” said Lani Calbert, chair of McCarthy’s Southwest Heart Hats committee. “After interviewing six finalist organizations, it was clear that our grantees serve some of our Valley’s most vulnerable residents and our grants would make a significant impact towards aiding the community.”

Family Promise of Greater Phoenix provides emergency shelter, transitional apartments, meals and support to homeless families. The $20,000 Heart Hats grant will be used to replace the single-pane windows in the housing shelter with commercial-grade, double-pane windows, which will provide a safer environment for the residents, in addition to making them more energy efficient. Earlier this year, McCarthy Heart Hats volunteers renovated a laundry room facility at Family Promise’s Family Center in Scottsdale.

Angels on Patrol will use its $20,000 grant to support families in crisis and youth who have either been abused or neglected and/or whose caregivers are facing extreme financial hardship as identified byPhoenix police officers.

“I want to express my sincere appreciation for the Heart Hats grant awarded to Angels on Patrol,” said Lt. Jacqui MacConnell with the Phoenix Police Department who founded the organization after her squad rescued two 5-year-old twins living in a cage and their 8-year-old brother in 2003. “I look forward to letting you know about all the children and families that we will be able to assist with the grant money.”

Four other nonprofits – Phoenix Day, Lauren’s Institute, All About Us Kids and Full Circle Help – were finalists for the grants and received $5,000 each. Prior recipients of Heart Hats grants include UMOM New Day Centers, Phoenix Youth at Risk, Habitat for Humanity, Salute a Soldier Foundation, Gabriel’s Angels, Tempe/Kyrene Communities in Schools and Crisis Nursery.

As the 10-year anniversary of the war in Afghanistan and Iraq approaches, thoughts turn to men and women who have risked their lives and left their families at home to serve and protect all of our families. The McCarthy Heart Hats volunteers in Newport Beach, Calif., McCarthy’s employee volunteer group, have been reaching out to help military personnel and their families over the last several years through clothing and holiday toy drives as well as other service activities. After learning more about the plight of homeless and disabled veterans in Orange County, they wanted to do even more to help these forgotten and neglected heroes who have found themselves on hard times.

Just recently, over a dozen Heart Hats conducted volunteer construction work including: hanging drywall; painting; installing carpeting, kitchen appliances and bathroom fixtures; building an outdoor shed; and conducting yard cleanup and landscape improvements at the Veteran’s First housing complex in Anaheim. Veterans First is a non-profit rehabilitation facility that provides housing and financial assistance to homeless and low-income military veterans in Orange County. The services are provided in an effort to help disadvantaged veterans get back on their feet so that they may live a self-sufficient, productive life again.

In addition to providing labor for the facility improvements, one extremely generous McCarthy employee donated over 28 new mattresses and box spring sets and several others gave sheets, blankets and other bedding to the veterans. Additional volunteers and donors from Bergelectic, Borbon, Inc., Capparelli Contracting, Signature Flooring and Southern California Environmental helped with the improvement work. All in all, approximately $20,000 in labor and donations were made by this team of construction workers, some of which are U.S. veterans themselves or have family members currently serving our country.

“It’s wonderful to see our area’s contractors dedicate their time and effort during these tough times in order to help our heroes,” said Justin Smith, community relations director of Veterans First. “With the poor economy, lack of jobs and the high cost of living in Orange County, many veterans find themselves struggling to keep a roof over their heads and others find themselves living on the streets. There are nearly 900 homeless veterans in Orange County alone. We are extremely thankful to volunteers and donors like the Heart Hats who continue to help us provide services such as housing for Orange County’s veterans in their time of need..”

The Heart Hat service project was organized by Jerod Plante, McCarthy assistant project manager, Dana Greaney, administrative assistant on the John Wayne Airport Terminal C project, and Linda Osborn, office manager at McCarthy’s Newport Beach office.

“It saddens me that so many military veterans who have made our country safe by serving us and risking their lives are returning home from war only to find they are without a job and have nowhere to live,” commented Osborn. “It’s the least we can do to give them a safe and comfortable place to lay their heads.”

This cause hits close to home and means a great deal to volunteers such as Ray LaTour, MIS engineer at McCarthy, who also served our country. “As a U.S. Navy disabled veteran, helping veterans and especially disabled veterans is extremely important to me,” said LaTour. “One day I may need help for a family member or myself. Giving back to those who took up the calling of defending our freedom and our way of life is priceless, whether it’s a simple thank you, a difficult home remodel or raising funds for the cause. A disabled veteran did not choose to be so. It is the price they paid for our freedom, and we should honor all who have served, especially those who have become disabled.”

The month of September has been officially designated National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. As a precursor to this month’s observance, interior design expert Kelee Katillac and a team of Heart Hat volunteers from McCarthy, one of America’s leading hospital builders, completed a therapeutic Miracle Room Makeover for an 8-year-old, St. Louis-area boy suffering with brain tumors.

According to the American Childhood Cancer Organization, more than 12,000 children under the age of 19 are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it is the most common cause of death by disease for children and adolescents in America.

“Color can affect mental attitude, assist in pain management and increase wellness,” explained Katillac.

Charlie Grady, the Miracle Room makeover recipient, suffers from Neurofibromatosis type 1. During the makeover, the young boy was in the midst of undergoing his second grueling course of chemotherapy at St. Louis Children’s Hospital to treat life-threatening brain tumors.

“When Kelee approached McCarthy about helping to complete a Miracle Room Makeover for Charlie, it really hit home on so many levels,” explained Scott Wittkop, McCarthy Central Division president. “As one of America’s leading hospital builders, we specialize in building healing environments. Now we could put these skills to work to help make a real difference. Our employees jumped at the chance to get involved.”

In February 2011, Katillac, founder of Design Gives Back, and a team from Guideposts magazine traveled to Missouri to make Charlie’s bedroom into a space of hope and happiness for him during this upcoming year of treatments and beyond. The months of pre-planning for the Miracle Makeover resulted in an intensive week of activities and culminated with an emotional “reveal” as the week came to a close. McCarthy ‘Heart Hats’ volunteers, with Katillac and representatives from Friends of Kids with Cancer, worked diligently to transform Charlie’s bedroom.

“Working closely with Charlie and using art therapy techniques, we were able to identify those colors that had a positive impact for Charlie and then design and build his new room around these,” continued Katillac. With a love of trucks and Thomas the Train, these elements became the heart of the room’s theme.

An important part of any Miracle Makeover includes engaging the family in the healing process while also transforming the physical space. Charlie has two siblings, a brother, Liam, 9 (with whom he shares a bedroom) and sister Kaitlin, 13. “When one child in a family is seriously ill, the other children feel it and suffer in their own way too,” continued Katillac. “Our goal was to provide an emotional outlet and celebrate their life interests through therapeutic art projects that were part of room makeovers for both Liam and Kaitlin.”

Charlie’s parents also participated in the week-long process including a “day of beauty” for mom, Kara. The requirements of chemotherapy have left the family few resources for vacations or down time. The Residence Inn of O’Fallon, Mo., donated rooms and fun amenities for the family’s week.

McCarthy Hearts Hats Project Manager Corey Black coordinated the building process with the design team and managed the team of volunteers. “Working closely with Kelee, we began working on our plan for the construction months in advance,” explained Black. “Packing so many activities into an intense week certainly added a sense of excitement to the process. Seeing the faces of Charlie and his family when the new spaces were revealed was especially meaningful.”

“Using color we were able to help Charlie cope with chemotherapy and stay bright during what most consider a time of darkness,” commented Katillac. “The room for hope and healing we created helped Charlie believe that he could become well again. It provided inspiring colors, images and activities that took his mind off of chemo and kept him positive.”

To make the project a reality was truly a team effort. Key sponsors in addition to McCarthy were Lowe’s, Sachs Electric Company, Residence Inn by Marriot, Flooring Systems, Design Gives Back and Children’s Hospital St. Louis.

“This process has been a miracle for our family,” commented John Grady, Charlie’s father. “It is never easy to have a child who is ill. The Makeover brought so much joy to Charlie and our entire family during a difficult time and continues to do so. And to know that his story will hopefully go on to inspire others really makes it special.”

Community leaders, city officials and neighborhood residents inaugurated the opening of a new tot lot at Mosswood Park in Oakland, Calif., during a ribbon cutting ceremony on Aug. 26, the same day that 220 volunteers participated in the annual Mosswood Park volunteer cleanup event.

The tot lot, near the newly refurbished basketball courts, is the latest sign of the urban park’s steady transformation. Under the firm’s “Heart Hats” volunteer program, McCarthy led the tot lot’s construction efforts as part of an on-going collaborative Mosswood Park renovation and beautification initiative between Kaiser Permanente, McCarthy, the City of Oakland and neighborhood residents. Mosswood Park is adjacent to Kaiser Permanente’s future Oakland Medical Center, on which McCarthy serves as the project’s general contractor.

“Mosswood Park is in an underserved area of Oakland, and in observing the depleted park from our Kaiser Permanente jobsite across the street, we embraced the opportunity to lead the construction efforts in building a playground and safe haven for the community,” said Angeles Garcia-Tapia, senior project manager with McCarthy. “McCarthy was excited to partner with our client Kaiser Permanente and the city of Oakland in this community project.”

McCarthy donated all preconstruction and construction management services for the tot lot. Project scope included underground utilities, irrigation, landscaping, turf grasses, chain link fencing, existing tree protection, site concrete, playground structures and site furnishes.

“It’s really satisfying to see everything come together,” said Carla Paliaga, a neighborhood parent who spearheaded the campaign to get a new tot lot installed at Mosswood. “I’m thrilled parents will now have a good place to visit with their kids.”

For years, the parents of young children in the neighborhood sought a safe playground for their kids, Paliaga said. The old tot lot, located near the historic house at the park, was in disrepair. The closest tot lot was miles away in the Piedmont Hills.

Paliaga’s parent group received a city grant and soon after, sought other support. In addition to McCarthy’s role, Kaiser Permanente contributed capital funding and NBBJ Architects volunteered design.

“The story of the new Mosswood Park tot lot began with a wish from the neighborhood to have a safe and clean area appropriate for their preschoolers to play and experience the outdoors,” said Michael J. Lane, Kaiser Permanente’s project director on the Oakland Medical Center Replacement Project. “Working with the neighborhood, the city of Oakland and McCarthy, Kaiser Permanente was able to make that wish come true.”

For the fifth year, McCarthy, Kaiser Permanente, city of Oakland and community volunteers planted flowers, painted park benches, bleachers and buildings, and added fresh mulch to park trees and shrubs as part of the annual Mosswood Park cleanup day.

“At the end of each clean-up day, we always are left with a sense of satisfaction for having been part of this event and sharing the experience with our client and the community,” said Garcia-Tapia. “Through our dedication to improving Mosswood Park, we feel that we are part of the community in which we are building.”

In addition to building the new tot lot, McCarthy held a holiday season toy drive for the underprivileged neighborhood children who utilize the Mosswood Park Community Center. Mosswood Park was also a beneficiary of McCarthy’s 2009 golf tournament, the company’s largest annual fundraiser.

As per the tradition, all proceeds from the event are donated to a St. Louis charity of the tournament winner’s choosing. This year the tournament raised $6,500 for charity. Since the tournament began in 1996, the event has generated more than $80,000 for area charities.

The co-ed tournament, held this month at the Bridgeton Municipal Athletic Complex, attracted participants from 15 local architectural and engineering firms, as well as two McCarthy teams. After battling through some truly competitive games, on what turned out to be one of the breezier days this summer, a new champion rose through the ranks and KPFF Consulting Engineers chose to share their first place winnings of $3,500 with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (http://www.lls.org/) and Operation Shower (http://www.operationshower.org/), a non-profit organization that provides baby showers for military families who are expecting a new baby and are experiencing or have recently experienced deployment.

The second place team from Lawrence Group will donate their $1,500 prize to The Atkins Family Memorial Trust in honor of Kyle Atkins, an employee of Lawrence Group who was tragically killed in an accident on February 11, 2011. Kyle is survived by his wife, Lisa, and his two sons, Logan (6 weeks) and Alex (2 years).

This year, the Master Griller competition included seven highly skilled grilling teams who competed for the title and fed hungry spectators. In the end, Rock Hill Mechanical took the top prize and will share their $1,500 in winnings with DeSmet Jesuit High School, Nerinx Hall High School and the National MS Society.

Under its signature “Tools for Schools” service program, McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. held a volunteer day on August 13 at Oakland Unified School District’s (OUSD) Skyline High School. As a result, students will return to the 2011/12 year with a beautified – and safer – school campus.

Due to scarce public resources, funding for landscaping at OUSD schools has decreased in recent years, leaving grounds unmaintained. This lack of funding is strongly felt at Skyline High School in the Oakland Hills, an area predisposed to fire danger, where overgrown brush is both a safety and a landscaping issue.

The Tools for Schools effort at Skyline focused on overhauling the landscaping on the 36 acre campus, which included weed abatement, brush clearing, bark spreading and other landscaping maintenance. McCarthy partnered with GKK Works and, collectively, the more than 30 volunteers worked to ensure that a safe and attractive learning environment would be ready for Skyline students on the first day of school.

McCarthy is a premier builder of educational facilities. Its Northern California Tools for Schools service program was instituted in 2005 to ensure real needs are being met in school districts where McCarthy employees work, live and play. To date, six campuses at Oakland Unified have received makeovers from the Tools for Schools service program.

McCarthy was honored this week with a 2011 Corporate University Xchange (CorpU) Award for Excellence and Innovation. This award recognizes outstanding work in corporate learning and talent development and comes on the heels of McCarthy’s placement on the prestigious 2011 Training 125 list earlier this year. The awards were presented during the Global Leadership Congress 2011, a 3-day symposium co-sponsored by CorpU and the University of Pennsylvania. A first-time applicant, McCarthy was honored with a Best Practice award in the Launching Category.

The CorpU Awards salute corporate and government learning organizations that create exciting, impactful programs resulting in measurable improvements in employee and business performance. Since 1999, the Awards, given by CorpU, the leading provider of corporate education research, benchmarking and advisory services for the enterprise learning marketplace, have set the standard for corporate learning.

“The winning programs show how important learning excellence is in enabling companies to execute their business strategy,” said Peter McAteer, CEO of CorpU. “We congratulate them.”

“Operating in today’s business world is more complicated than ever,” commented McCarthy Chairman and CEO Mike Bolen. “Through McCarthy Build U® we are able to provide our employee-owners with a comprehensive training and development program designed to result in both short- and long-term success. To be included among this year’s CorpU Xchange award winners is truly an honor.”

Founded as a family owned business almost 150 years ago, McCarthy is one of the largest 100% employee-owned companies in America today. The firm has long fostered a culture dedicated to continuous improvement, and “Learning” represents one of McCarthy’s six company Core Values.

While a formal McCarthy Training Program had been in place for decades, McCarthy formally launched an entirely revamped training program in 2008 under McCarthy Build U. Unusual in the construction industry and among best-in-class training programs outside of the construction industry, the McCarthy Build U framework provides the company with the structure, alignment, centralization and flexibility needed to personalize training to meet both individual and business needs.

About Corporate University Xchange
Corporate University Xchange is a private membership of senior learning and talent executives. Founded in 1997, members have access to cutting-edge research, practitioner-tested tools, and expertly facilitated peer-to-peer networking.

After six months of planning, permitting and construction Street Teens, a non-profit, volunteer-based organization dedicated to helping homeless and at-risk teens in Southern Nevada, finally has a new larger facility to help homeless teens in the valley. With the help of McCarthy and many community partners donating their time and talents, volunteers successfully converted a residential building into a 4,000-square-foot drop-in center.
Crews had to cut into existing concrete slabs to install new underground lines and renovations included demolition, reframing of the exterior and interior structure, stucco repairs, roofing, installing new electrical, HVAC systems, duct work, plumbing, fixtures, drywall, paint, doors & hardware, trim, and finishes. Additionally, more than $50,000 of site work and landscaping upgrades, were completed to achieve a Certificate of Occupancy.

“This facility has been worth the wait,” said Lisa Preston, executive director of Street Teens. “We can now accommodate more youth than previously, and we currently anticipate seeing 25- 35 youth per day for our services.”

Street Teens had previously rented a facility and was forced to relocate. That is when Paul Dudzinski, project manager for McCarthy, stepped in to help the organization look for a new building. He personally provided pro bono construction manager services.

“McCarthy had been involved with the Street Teens with past events and we knew of their situation,” explains Dudzinski. “I knew from experience that renovations are not always easy and whichever building they chose to purchase would require someone to help guide them through the process.”

Dudzinski helped advise them of the required changes to the residential facility and approximate costs, and began reaching out to project partners and skilled tradesman to provide services of materials as a donation or discount. The overall project budget was $159,000. McCarthy managed the project costs, secured a number of donated services and materials, and brought the project in approximately 10% under budget.

“I am extremely proud of the fact that we were able to complete this project and additional requirements within the budget that was established more than two years ago. Everyone involved really worked together to create a special place for this worthwhile organization,” added Dudzinski.

Now open, the new facility features a larger computer lab, laundry room, restroom and shower facilities, as well as larger offices and kitchen for meals, including added storage room space.

“This amazing transformation could not have happened had it not been for McCarthy’s patience and guidance,” exclaims Preston.

In addition to McCarthy, a special thank you to all team members who played a key role in the project: Pugsley Simpson Coulter Architects, Smedco Engineering, Copper Creek Construction, West Coast Concrete, 3 Brothers Masonry, Interstate Plumbing and Air Conditioning, D.I. Electric, Stargate Plumbing, T M Barth Landscaping, Painters Local, Discount Dumpster, Blue Star Barricade and Traffic Control, Nova Engineering, Alcal-Arcade, Penhall Co.
