Located at 8200 Westminster Blvd. in Westminster, Calif., the three-level facility was topped out during a ceremony when steel workers from Pro-Steel placed the final structural steel I-beam on the braced-frame steel structure.

Former Mayor and current council member Frank G. Fry spoke during the ceremony along with McCarthy Project Manager Blaze Bartoli. The event was both a thank you to the contractors and a tribute to the progress made thus far. The Chief of Police Andy Hall, Captain Mitch Waller, Captain Ron Coopman and Sgt. Brian Carpenter were in attendance along with several other dignitaries from the city of Westminster, construction workers and project consultants.

During the topping out event, the final steel beam was signed by event guests and an American flag and evergreen tree were attached to the beam before it was lifted and secured to the top of the police headquarters structure. Marking the mid-way point in the life of a construction project, the topping out tradition of attaching a tree and flag to the final structural beam has been practiced by construction workers for over 1000 years. The tree represents growth, life and good luck during the project and for the building’s future occupants. The flag is displayed as a patriotic symbol that signifies the united effort by the project team to achieve a common goal.

Westminster City Mayor Margie L. Rice was unable to attend the event, but McCarthy arranged for the beam to be lowered and signed by her after the event. Mayor Rice said she was honored and excited to sign the beam and to be included in this project milestone for the Police Headquarters, which is part of the overall revitalization plan for the Westminster Civic Center.

The $65 million (development cost) police headquarters project includes construction of a 91,000-square-foot police building housing an upgraded 911 communications center, a new forensic lab, increased evidence storage capacity, an Emergency Operations Center, a Type I jail facility and administrative work space. The project also includes site work such as driveways, surface parking, a sallyport, landscape and fire access lane improvements.

On schedule for completion in May 2011, the police building was designed by AECOM of Orange, Calif. to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Requirements.

The Westminster Police Department Headquarters is one of three police facilities McCarthy is currently constructing in partnership with Griffin Structures. McCarthy is serving as construction manager and Griffin Structures in the program manager. The other projects include a 62,064-square-foot police station in Buena Park, Calif., and a 55,000-square-foot police station in Hesperia, Calif.

Soka University of America is holding a celebration on September 29 to commemorate placement of the final roof truss on its new Performing Arts Center which is approximately 50% complete.

Soka University of America is holding a celebration on September 29 to commemorate placement of the final roof truss on its new Performing Arts Center which is approximately 50% complete. Being constructed by McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., the project is located on 1.9 acres at 1 University Drive between Founders Hall and Pauling Hall on the Soka University campus.

Soka University has invited university officials, local dignitaries and the entire design and construction team to attend the event. Special guests will have the opportunity to sign the truss before it is lifted by a 300-ton crawler crane and secured to the roof of the Performing Arts Center. Students and visitors on the campus will also be able to witness the project milestone from the campus greenbelt which overlooks the construction site.

“Typically, a building tops out when the last structural steel beam is placed,” said McCarthy project manager Nate Ray. “However, the Soka Performing Arts Center has four massive roof trusses which span the width of the performance hall, so it seemed appropriate to celebrate the placement of the final truss. At 16.5 feet tall and 114 feet wide, these trusses are so large that they will be delivered at night with a California Highway Patrol escort.”

Junior Steel of Gardena, Calif. is the specialty contractor who will be conducting the placement of the roof trusses. The process will begin on September 28 and will culminate during the event on September 29 at 12:30 p.m.

“We’re delighted to share this historic moment with our students, staff, faculty and community,” noted president Daniel Y. Habuki of Soka University. “This is our chance to thank the hundreds of construction workers who have done such a good job that construction is ahead of schedule for our new 1000-seat Performing Arts Center. We look forward to dedicating it in May 2011 as part of our 10th anniversary celebration for our Aliso Viejo campus.”

McCarthy is serving as general contractor for the $73 million project which began in December 2008. The project includes construction of a three-level, 47,836-square-foot Performing Arts Center housing a reception lobby, support spaces and a 1,000 seat auditorium as well as a 48,974-square-foot Academic Building located adjacent to and providing support for the Performing Arts Center. The new four-level academic building will house 11 classrooms, 29 faculty offices, a 150-seat black box theater, four dressing rooms, a rehearsal/dance studio, musician warm-up spaces and other support areas.

Designed by Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects LLP of Los Angeles, the new buildings will provide visual continuity with the existing buildings and the Mediterranean hill town design theme of the campus. Built on a sloping site, the first level of both buildings will be at the same finish grade as the perimeter road that circles the University exposing only the south side of the structure. The Performing Arts Center and Academic Facilities buildings share a loading dock and locker room area which will connect the two buildings. Both structures are being built with a combination of a structural concrete and structural steel frame. The buildings’ exteriors will feature smooth plaster walls, travertine stone bands, aluminum curtain walls, clear glass glazing and clay tile roofs.

The project’s design and construction team are pursuing United States Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Certification for the buildings. In order to
achieve a lofty LEED rating, McCarthy is using sustainable construction methods throughout the project such as minimizing unrecyclable construction waste, maintaining proper indoor air quality and ensuring that the subcontractors install the specified “green” materials. Likewise, the design of these structures incorporates numerous sustainable and energy efficiency solutions. The academic building will feature operable windows, ceiling fans, displacement ventilation and radiant panels. The Performing Arts Center’s “green roof” and sunshade structure surrounding the lobby will use photovoltaic (solar) panels, and a bioswale will help manage storm water runoff. McCarthy is using building materials made from recycled content and that are locally extracted, processed and regionally manufactured. Additionally, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood and low emitting adhesives, sealants, paints, carpets and composite wood products will be incorporated in both structures.

Once completed in fall 2010, the new Performing Arts Center will serve the campus and South Orange County as a venue for lectures, assemblies, concerts and theater productions furthering Soka University’s role as a cultural center and place of community gathering.
D. Anderson Cancer Center Albert B. and Margaret M. Alkek Hospital expansion in Houston. The scope of this $220-million project will add 12 levels to the existing 12-level Alkek inpatient tower.

“This ceremony marks our progress toward the successful completion of a hospital expansion for a facility that has a rich tradition of continually working to find a cure for cancer,” said McCarthy’s Texas Division President, Mike McWay. “We are excited to surpass this construction milestone as we top out the Alkek Hospital Expansion, which will have a lasting impact on the area.”

“As the demand for inpatient beds continues to rise, we are seeing occupancies in excess of 100%. Achieving this milestone resonates with everyone at M. D. Anderson as we seek to meet the needs of our growing patient population,” said M. D. Anderson Cancer Center ‘s Project Director, Janet Sisolak.

The Topping-Out ceremony marked the completion of the highest point of construction on the job site. Instead of the traditional Topping-Out ceremony of placing an evergreen at the highest point of the structure, M. D. Anderson faculty, staff and patients had the opportunity to sign their names and write messages on three steel beams to be used in the construction.

The 500,000-square-foot vertical expansion will be completed in multiple phases. The first phase prepared the existing Alkek Hospital for the vertical expansion and included selective demolition, temporary waterproofing activities and the installation of a tower crane and a personnel/material hoist. The second phase consists of the core and shell construction. The third phase will include the construction of the first three inpatient floors and is expected to be complete in 2010. Five additional patient floors will be built as shell space in addition to the construction of a mechanical floor and the renovation of several areas within the existing building, including level 12, which contains special air filtering systems dedicated to patients with compromised immune systems.

McCarthy is one of the most experienced builders of healthcare facilities in Texas. In addition to the M. D. Anderson Alkek Hospital expansion, McCarthy’s roster of healthcare projects includes work for United Regional Healthcare Systems in Wichita Falls, the Carillon Point Plaza in Lubbock, as well as numerous renovation and expansion projects at the Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco, including a $25 million hospital tower expansion, a $5.8 million addition of a 28,000-square-foot emergency department, a $5 million conference center and a $2.2 million renovation of 14,000 square feet of outpatient services.

The M. D. Anderson Alkek Hospital expansion began in January 2008 and is scheduled for completion in 2010. The architect for this design-build project is HKS, Inc. of Dallas.

McCarthy, one of the nation’s leading parking structure builders, has topped out the exterior concrete frame for the new 402,503-square-foot, three-level parking structure and adjacent 3,200-square-foot Public Safety Office at Grossmont College located at 8800 Grossmont College Drive in El Cajon, Calif.
Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District is the developer of the $24.5 million construction project. Ken Emmons of Gafcon is serving as project manager and Jim Davies is leading the Gafcon effort on site as the program/senior project manager on behalf of the District. International Parking Design is the project architect.

A topping out luncheon, catered by the Barbecue Pit of El Cajon, was hosted by McCarthy March 6th for consultants, subcontractors, District representatives and McCarthy project team members to commemorate the construction milestone. Approximately 100 guests were in attendance, including Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District Chancellor Dr. Cindy Miles, Vice Chancellor Sue Rearic, Vice President John Colson, and Director of Facilities Planning Development and Maintenance Tim Flood. Also representing the District was Dale Switzer, senior director of facilities planning and development.

The parking structure, which will accommodate 1,431 vehicles, features sections of metal trellises, stucco, and brick veneer on the external façade. Two pedestrian bridges will connect Grossmont College’s main campus to the parking structure.

According to McCarthy Project Manager Lee Sudhoff, the project team has faced some obstacles, such as encountering unknown obstructions during the excavation work, which resulted in delays to the start of the foundation work. The team also had to overcome weather delays because the rain impacted several critical deck pours.

“The delays due to the earthwork and weather have posed some challenges, but thanks to some dedicated crews and a little ingenuity on the part of the entire project team, we’re actually topping out ahead of schedule,” explained Sudhoff. “The project is on target for completion the end of July 2009.”

The Atlanta office of McCarthy has marked a major construction milestone at a topping out ceremony for the Parker H. Petit Science Center at Georgia State University.

Topping out of the 10-story, 350,000 square foot research facility comes following one-year of construction. The project is on target for completion in April of 2010.

The facility, named for benefactor Parker H. Petit, will house teaching and research facilities for nearly 6,000 students pursuing various science and nursing degrees. It will include state-of-the-art dry and wet laboratories, BSL-2 and BSL-3 labs and a BSL-4 suite. The lab is part of the new University Science Park, located on a three-acre site at Piedmont Avenue and Decatur Street in downtown Atlanta.

“It’s both exciting and gratifying to reach this point in a major construction project,” said Kevin W. Kuntz, McCarthy southeast division president. “McCarthy’s expertise in complex research facilities has been critical to keeping construction of the Petit Science Center on target. At the same time, it is hugely rewarding to construct a facility that will significantly impact the learning experience for thousands of students in the years to come, and contribute to Atlanta’s downtown revitalization.”

“McCarthy was able to help overcome some surprises that had real potential to take our project off schedule,” said Robin Morris, GSU’s vice president for research & regents. “After finding some existing subterranean structures and unsuitable soil beneath what would become the building’s footprint, the team was able to undercut the area and insert new material. Solid experience helped guide the solution and keep the facility on schedule.”

CUH2A is the architect for the project.

McCarthy has topped out the steel frame for the new five-story Acute Care Pavilion for Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego, the only dedicated child-specific medical center in the region, located at 3020 Children’s Way in the Kearny Mesa area of San Diego.

McCarthy has topped out the steel frame for the new five-story Acute Care Pavilion for Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego, the only dedicated child-specific medical center in the region, located at 3020 Children’s Way in the Kearny Mesa area of San Diego.

The 279,000-square-foot Acute Care Pavilion will house a much-needed surgical center, 84 medical-surgical beds, a neonatal intensive care center, and a cancer center to aid in fulfilling the increasing demand for children’s critical care in the San Diego area. Specifically, the facility will include 16 operating rooms with associated support departments, a 28-bed hematology and oncology unit, a 10-bed bone marrow transplant intensive care unit, a 32-bed neonatal intensive care unit, and 84 acuity adaptable medical surgery beds. Completion of the project is scheduled for the summer of 2010.

The new Acute Care Pavilion, prominently visible from I-805 heading north from Mission Valley, is situated on a 148,650-square-foot site at the southeast end of the Rady Children’s Hospital campus, just south of the existing Rady Children’s Hospital Rose Pavilion. A bridge will connect the existing facility to the new five -story building.

A topping-out ceremony was held on July 25th. A steel beam, signed by the project team members, was hoisted into the air, together with an Evergreen tree and the American flag, as part of the traditional ceremony. A second, smaller beam, to be signed by young patients at a later date, will be encased for display in the new facility.

“McCarthy and its project team members can be very proud of its efforts to date, already being one week ahead of schedule and maintaining an excellent safety record,” said Rady Children’s Hospital President and CEO Kathleen Sellick, who addressed the workers during the topping out ceremony. “The new Patient Care Pavilion is the centerpiece of Rady Children’s strategy to address the critical need for urgent care in the region, and we are so grateful to all the workers for being part of this vital mission.”

McCarthy began its utility coordination efforts and on-site construction planning activities just one year ago. Working with McMahon Steel and its partners at Rady Children’s, the company chose to place an early steel order. Through solid teamwork, the company was able to beat its initial steel erection timeframe and top out steel ahead of schedule.

“To be off to such a strong start on a very complicated OSHPD project, knowing what is at stake here, is a very big deal to all of us,” said Ben Meyers, project director for McCarthy, who’s heading up the project for McCarthy Building Companies. “This Acute Care Pavilion must finish on time, and being ahead of schedule at the topping out milestone confirms we’re on course to meet that goal.”

Another prominent goal for the $260 million Acute Care Pavilion is to achieve a facility that can be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified under guidelines set forth by the U.S. Green Building Council.

“Building green is a growing trend in the healthcare industry,” said Meyers. “It contributes to the “health” of the building environment, which the patients and staff come in contact with every day. The design of this project incorporates environmentally friendly materials and interior coatings as well as judicious indoor air-quality monitoring and management.”

In addition to providing excellent indoor air quality, the design incorporates natural light and utilizes high-efficiency air conditioning and mechanical equipment to provide sustainable, lower-overall life cycle operating costs that positively impact the ongoing operation of the hospital. The building also will feature a green roof system that will help minimize the building heat gain and control the rainwater run off from the roof.

Designed by San Francisco-based architectural firm Anshen+Allen, the building features a glass fiber reinforced, precast concrete exterior; dimensional travertine stone; storefront and curtain wall glass systems with colored accents; and metal panels, railings and canopies.

KPFF of San Francisco is the structural engineer; RBF, San Diego, civil engineer; Randall Lamb, San Diego, electrical engineer; Shadpour Consulting Engineers, San Diego, mechanical engineer; and Royston Hanamoto Alley & Abey of Mill Valley is serving as landscape architect. Completion of the project is scheduled for the summer of 2010.
McCarthy also handled the design/build services for the adjacent 332,279-square-foot parking structure, with space for 1,039 vehicles on five levels. The project was completed at the end of 2007.

McCarthy, one of the nation’s largest healthcare builders, recently topped out the new Mission Hospital Patient Care Tower.

McCarthy, one of the nation’s largest builders of healthcare facilities, recently topped out the new Mission Hospital Patient Care Tower when steel workers from Schuff Steel placed the final structural steel I-beam on the braced-frame steel structure. Steel workers on the project placed approximately 1,000 tons of structural steel while constructing the tower’s frame.

Adorned with an American flag, an evergreen tree and signatures from construction workers, physicians, employees, donors, hospital volunteers and campus visitors from Mission Hospital, a white ceremonial steel beam was lifted to the top of Mission Hospital’s Patient Care Tower during a special ceremony marking the topping out of the building.

“The tradition of attaching a tree and flag to the final structural beam has been practiced by construction workers for over 1000 years,” said McCarthy Project Manager Todd Foos. “Although there are various thoughts as to what the topping out tree symbolizes, construction workers on the Mission Hospital project believe the tree represents growth, life and good luck for the building’s future occupants, and the flag is displayed as a patriotic symbol that signifies the united effort by the project team to achieve a common goal.,” said Foos.

The four-level new Patient Care Tower will increase Mission’s intensive-care capacity including the Williams Family Neuroscience Wing, house 24 medical/surgical beds, advanced diagnostic imaging, the Vitek Institute for Robotic Surgery, nuclear medicine, a Swenson Family Linear Accelerator Suite, a chapel, and the Schumacher Healing Garden. McCarthy is also constructing an underground tunnel and a 175-foot-long pedestrian bridge that will connect the new Patient Care Tower with the main hospital building on the third floor. The new Patient Care Tower is utilizing a braced-frame structural system to reduce the size of the columns and beams and to provide superior seismic performance in compliance with California Senate Bill 1953, which requires strict seismic regulations for all acute care facilities. The main vertical systems such as elevators, stairs, mechanical and electrical shafts are positioned outside the braced floor area. These features maximize the floor-space and provide flexibility to accommodate current and future space needs.

Prior to erecting the new tower, McCarthy conducted 11 months of significant site work such as the installation of new utilities, re-configuring the entrance to the hospital and parking lot and demolishing an existing two-story conference center.

Designed by RBB Architects Inc. of Los Angeles, the new Patient Care Tower’s award-winning architecture is designed to promote healing for patients, a comfortable atmosphere for families and an enhanced state-of-the-art working environment for hospital staff. The project features a chapel in a half-cylinder structure with an inclined roof supported from the top by radial trusses. Additionally, the Schumacher Healing Garden will include sitting areas and lush landscape will be built next to the chapel to evoke serene space for relaxation, prayer and mediation. The chapel and healing garden will be strategically located at the entrance of the new tower as architectural focal points that provide a soft counterpart to the high-tech background of the tower’s exterior skin, and to invite easy access for the entire community. The new Patient Care Tower’s exterior, which will complement the existing tower, is composed of metal panels and an exposed steel braced-frame as well as extensive glazing to provide an abundance of natural light. The project is scheduled to complete in fall 2009.

Part of the St. Joseph Health System based in Orange, Calif., the new Patient Care Tower at Mission Hospital is one of seven facilities McCarthy is currently building for St. Joseph Health System. These include a new Cancer Center, medical office building and parking structure at St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, a 407-car parking structure for St. Joseph Health System in Santa Ana, and a medical office building and parking structure at St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton, Calif.

About Mission Hospital

Construction has topped out on the AT&T Performing Arts Center, an 80,300-square-foot multi-form theatre facility.

Construction has topped out on the AT&T Performing Arts Center, an 80,300-square-foot multi-form theatre facility. Upon completion, the 600-seat Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre will provide a new state-of-the-art home for the Dallas Theater Center, Dallas Black Dance Theatre and Anita N. Martinez Ballet Folklorico, as well as numerous other performing arts organizations that serve Dallas and the region.

The Wyly Theatre is designed by REX/OMA, Joshua Prince-Ramus (partner in charge) and Rem Koolhaas, in collaboration with Houston-based firm Kendall Heaton.

The 12-level building will feature a groundbreaking design with an unprecedented “stacked,” vertically organized facility that completely rethinks the traditional form of theatre.

The Wyly Theatre will be a cast-in-place and structural steel framed facility with exterior curtainwall and aluminum cladding. This facility will provide new performance space for Dallas with its revolutionary approach to theatre design, incorporating state-of-the-art technology and advanced mechanics that will allow artistic directors to rapidly change the stage configuration to a wide variety of seating configurations including proscenium, thrust and flat floor.

The main performance chamber is located at ground level and support spaces are located above-house and below-house. This layout represents a significant departure from typical theatre design in which most support spaces surround the performance chamber. Included elsewhere within the facility are a cocktail bar, rehearsal spaces, administrative offices, costume shop, lobby, stage support areas, mechanical rooms, production spaces and rooftop multipurpose space.

McCarthy is also building one of the AT&T Performing Arts Centers’ underground parking garages, a 222,000-square-foot project that includes three levels of underground parking for more than 600 vehicles to conveniently and safely serve all Dallas Arts District venues and patrons. When completed, this below-grade parking garage will be backfilled with soil, creating the above-ground site for the Center’s Performance Park.

“McCarthy is very pleased to be an integral part of the expansion of the Dallas Arts District. The Wyly Theatre and underground parking garage projects provide McCarthy an opportunity to once again showcase our abilities with these types of facilities,” said McCarthy Texas Division President Mike McWay.

“The campaign to build the AT&T Performing Arts Center is entering its final phase,” said Howard Hallam, chair of the Board of Directors of the AT&T Performing Arts Center. “With construction now underway, the 25-year dream of the Dallas Arts District is coming to fruition in a tangible, visible and dramatic way. We look forward to working with McCarthy over the next several years until the completion of the Wyly Theatre.”

In addition to the Wyly Theatre, McCarthy’s most notable performing arts project work are the Hollywood/Highland complex including the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, California, a $312 million, 833,109-square-foot, mixed-use facility known as home to the Academy Awards, and the UC Davis Robert & Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts in Davis, California, a $51.5 million, 106,000-square-foot, multi-level, 1,800-seat main performance hall with a 25-seat studio theater.

About McCarthy
Founded in 1864, McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. is one of the nation’s oldest and largest privately held construction firms. The company provides general contracting, construction management, program management and design/build services for entertainment, healthcare, education, parking, retail, laboratory, biotechnical, microelectronic, and industrial facilities; office buildings; tenant interiors; mixed-use; and bridges and highways. McCarthy is 100 percent employee owned. More information about the company is available online at www.mccarthy.com.
