The Winn Army Community Hospital at Fort Stewart moved another step closer to completing its $23.1 million expansion and renovation by officially breaking ground on a new 65,000-square-foot building. Being constructed by McCarthy, the project is targeted to achieve LEED Silver certification and also includes the renovation of approximately 1,000 square feet of the existing hospital, which opened in 1983.

“McCarthy is honored to do our part to serve the soldiers who serve our country both at home and abroad,” said Tim York, project director for McCarthy. “Right now, soldiers and their families must go to more than 20 buildings located throughout the base for medical care. This new facility will provide a more efficient, effective way for them to receive medical care at a single location.”

The contract and construction is being overseen by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District.

Services offered at the new Winn Army Community Hospital will include physical and occupational therapies, orthopedics, podiatry, social services and behavioral health. Soldiers stationed at Fort Stewart include the Third Infantry Division, which is continually training for and deploying for combat.

“At the time this hospital opened, it was state of the art,” said Col. Ronald Place, commander of Winn Army Community Hospital. “As we’ve grown and technology has advanced, a new solution was necessary. This expansion and renovation will enable our soldiers and their families to continue to receive a quality healthcare experience for years to come.”

The project architect is Leo A Daly. Completion of the expansion and renovation is scheduled for September 2013.

McCarthy recently broke ground on the renovation and expansion of Electra Memorial Hospital in Electra, Texas, near Wichita Falls.

Essentially doubling the size of the hospital, the 20,890-square-foot addition to the hospital will create nine private and five semi-private patient rooms, a new rehabilitation department and a new computed tomography (CT) imaging area. This $11-million project will also include renovations of 15,000 square feet of the existing hospital that will improve work flow for outpatient services, imaging and cardiology, update the existing mechanical and electrical systems and provide various other new systems within the renovated areas.

”McCarthy was pleased to be chosen by Electra Memorial for the additions to the hospital. Our team is already on-site working hard to ensure we complete this project on time and on budget and exceed both the hospital’s and the city of Electra’s expectations,” said McCarthy’s Texas Division President Mike McWay. “We look forward to helping Electra Memorial achieve its long term goals for expansion and become the healthcare pulse for the community, providing an exceptional facility for doctors, patients and the community.”

The multi-phased renovation project is designed to minimize impacts to the daily operations of the existing facility during construction. In addition to daily coordination and communication with hospital staff, McCarthy will utilize temporary partitions and various infection control methods to protect public spaces and minimize disruptions to hospital operations.

McCarthy is one of the most experienced builders of healthcare facilities in Texas. In addition to the Electra Memorial Hospital project, McCarthy’s roster of healthcare projects includes work for The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Midland Memorial Hospital in Midland, United Regional Health Care System in Wichita Falls and Carillion Senior LifeCare™ Community in Lubbock. The Balfour Beatty | McCarthy joint venture team is also underway on the $534-million hospital replacement project for the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood, Texas.

The project is scheduled for completion in spring 2013. Rees Associates Inc. of Dallas is the architect for the project.

Mercy has selected McCarthy to serve as construction manager for a new 825,000-square-foot hospital in Joplin, Mo. to replace the former St. John’s Mercy Regional Medical Center demolished in the May 22, EF-5 tornado. The deadliest tornado in Missouri and the U.S since 1947 directly hit the hospital.

The new, larger hospital has a construction budget of $335 million and will initially have 261 inpatient beds but expand to 309. Plans include medical surgical, critical care, women’s/children’s (labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum rooms), behavioral health and rehab. The new hospital will be located at the intersection of Interstate 44 and Main Street in Joplin.

“We are making this commitment because it’s the right thing to do for Joplin,” said Lynn Britton, president and CEO of Mercy, which includes 30 hospitals and more than 200 outpatient facilities in a seven-state area. “The May 22 tornado devastated our community in Joplin and destroyed our hospital, but we’ve promised all along we would rebuild. We worked closely with McCarthy to break ground in January 2012.”

McCarthy has worked with Chesterfield, Mo.-based Mercy since the disaster, arriving in Joplin just days after the massive tornado struck. McCarthy worked alongside the National Guard and volunteers around the clock to help set up a temporary 60-bed field hospital so that Mercy could re-establish medical services to the Joplin community as soon as possible. The tents have since been upgraded to insulated panels to better endure the winter. The facility is still in use and will serve patients until spring 2012, when a more secure temporary solution, a modular “component hospital,” will take its place.

“McCarthy is honored to serve as a trusted partner with Mercy throughout the years and specifically through this process,” said McCarthy Central Division President Scott Wittkop. “We were passionate about helping Mercy replace its battered building with a temporary field hospital only one week after the tornado devastated the city of Joplin. We are just as passionate about replacing the temporary hospital with a ‘component hospital,’ and finally a bigger and better replacement hospital to serve the Joplin community.”

McCarthy has been working with Mercy planners to develop the functional program for the replacement hospital since July 2011. The architectural firms HKS, Inc. in association with Archimages, Inc. are part of the integrated team effort, with Heideman & Associates serving as the MEP Engineer.

Mercy is accepting donations to help those affected by the tornado at Mercy Foundation for Health Innovation Joplin Relief Fund.

Mercy is the eighth largest Catholic health care system in the U.S. and serves more than 3 million people annually. Mercy includes 30 hospitals, more than 200 outpatient facilities, 38,000 co-workers and 1,500 integrated physicians in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. Mercy also has outreach ministries in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. For more about Mercy, visit http://www.mercy.net.

McCarthy recently completed construction of a 154,486-square-foot patient tower at Methodist Hospital of Southern California in Arcadia, Calif. The North Tower is the latest addition to the 122-acre Methodist Hospital campus, which originally opened in 1957 and has undergone building additions and renovations over the years.

The $140 million project included construction of the Hollfelder Emergency Care Center on the first floor; a 20-bed ICU and pharmacy on the second floor; 40 medical/surgical beds each on the third, fourth and fifth floors; support services on the basement level; and a new entry structure to include a covered drop-off area at the building’s main entrance.

McCarthy also constructed a 90-foot-long underground tunnel at the basement level to connect the existing Hoefflin Building to the new North Tower. Because of its size and location, the eight-foot-wide by eight-foot-high tunnel posed an interesting challenge to the project team.

“We needed to construct 60 feet of the passageway below the foundations and floor slab of the existing building, where extensive underpinning was required to support the existing structure prior to tunneling activities,” said Andy Liu, McCarthy’s senior project manager.

Liu said construction of the tunnel was complicated because the work was performed immediately beneath the existing ER, which remained operational during construction. “Extra precaution had to be taken to ensure no disruption to the ER, and also to maintain safe conditions for the workers below,” said Liu. The tunnel work took about three months to complete from start to finish.

The tunnel is an important piece of the project, but it is above ground where visitors will get their first impression of the new Methodist Hospital tower. The hospital exterior transforms the campus’ appearance by presenting a fresh face to the north. The exterior façade consists of Alucobond aluminum panels and a plastered finish around punched aluminum windows.

Inside, the tower drastically increases the hospital’s capabilities, both in terms of technological ability and size—the number of emergency department beds will increase approximately 65 percent, and the intensive care unit will grow by one third.

To help create a serene environment, NTD Architecture of San Diego designed the structure to bring nature indoors with open-air atriums, natural lighting and green spaces.

Besides the tunnel, another interesting project hurdle was space. The project sits on a lot that is a little more than two acres, with its north end against an existing parking structure and south end connecting to an existing two-level ER and patient admitting area. Liu said access to the site was limited to one area on the north end.

Other construction highlights include a four-foot-thick monolithic mat foundation that encapsulates the structural steel moment frame supported by pad foundations which are situated below the mat foundation.

Along with building this state-of-the-art healthcare facility, Methodist Hospital has updated its systems with the latest advancements in healthcare technologies to expedite patient check-in and admission, as well as electronic tracking of a patient’s status, location, progress and vital signs.

Construction of the patient tower ensures the hospital’s compliance with Senate Bill 1953, which requires seismic upgrades for all acute care facilities, before the 2013 deadline.

The $300 million facility was funded using tax-exempted FHA Insured Mortgage Revenue Bonds along with transformational gifts, primarily one given by Tom and Bea Hollfelder for the Hollfelder Emergency Care Center.

The project opened to the public on September 27, 2011.

Alkek Hospital Expansion in Houston as the region’s Overall Best Project. Completed by the Texas Division of McCarthy in 2011, the Alkek Hospital expansion project was chosen out of more than 100 project entries in 17 categories to win the best overall title. The project is now entered into ENR’s national competition to select the nation’s top project.

ENR Texas & Louisiana selected winning projects based on overcoming significant challenges, displaying quality design and construction, adopting innovative approaches and maintaining a safe work site. The vertical hospital expansion project was one of McCarthy’s most intensive healthcare expansions to date, challenging the firm to find solutions for immediate and long-lead item deliveries, strict quality control requirements, site constraints, infection control and minimizing interruptions to existing hospital operations.

“McCarthy is proud to be part of the design-build team that successfully constructed the Alkek Hospital expansion project amidst a myriad of challenges” said Ben Johanneman, McCarthy project director. “We continue to use the lessons learned from this project and build upon this project knowledge in much of our other work. Its successful completion has led us to a remarkable ongoing relationship with MD Anderson.”

McCarthy was initially hired in early 2007 to deliver preconstruction and construction services for the 12-story vertical expansion to the existing 12-story Alkek Hospital. Working with design partner HKS, Inc., the team constructed this $240 million design-build project over the next three years, finishing ahead of schedule and on budget. The completed project added five inpatient floors, three shell floors, a pharmacy, a facilities floor, a mechanical floor and an observation deck. The facility remained fully operational during construction, and the expansion floors were opened for patient and staff use in January 2011.

The design/build team of McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., and TAYLOR, are working with St. Joseph Health System to build a new patient tower, parking structure and central utility plant at the St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton, Calif. Located on the northern side of the existing medical campus at Bastanchury Road and Harbor Boulevard, site preparation has been underway since December 2010, and the new tower officially broke ground during a private ceremony on September 25, 2011.

An integral part of the St. Jude Medical Center’s multi-phased Master Plan, the $285.4 million project includes construction of a 200,000-square-foot, 4-story acute care building with a connecting bridge to level four of the existing hospital building and a 14,000-square-foot central utility plant. Along with architect International Parking Design of Irvine, Calif., McCarthy is also adding 215 parking spaces to an existing 455-car parking structure that the firm built in 2004.

Prior to construction of the new tower, McCarthy performed seven months of major utility work and is demolishing an existing medical records building and parking garage. New surface parking and street improvements including redevelopment of a cul-de-sac, addition of right-turn lane, street widening and extension of a center median are also being conducted.

According to McCarthy Project Manger Todd Foos, one of the biggest challenges on the project thus far has been relocating all of the hospital’s utility services prior to the demolition of the existing parking structure and construction of the new tower.

“We worked closely with the hospital to devise a plan that enabled us to complete this sensitive infrastructure work while mitigating disruption to the existing hospital,” explained Foos. “Additional challenges will be maintaining access to the existing hospital’s loading dock. In order to meet this requirement, we will be constructing a temporary road through the foundation of the new building which will be in place until February or March 2012.”

Featuring sophisticated technologies and innovations in patient-centered care, the new 120-bed patient tower will house: private and semi/private rooms with flat-screen TVs and comfortable daybeds for family members; computers in every patient room permitting physicians and nurses to review and update medical records without leaving the patient’s bedside; 14 operating rooms with state-of-the-art “smart” surgical suites and the newest improvements in minimally invasive and robotic surgeries; and advanced information systems allowing immediate clinician collaboration. The tower will also include a spacious cafeteria, materials management, pharmacy and areas for support staff.

In order to meet strictCaliforniaseismic regulations in compliance with Senate Bill 1953, the tower is being built with a lateral force resisting system consisting of buckling restrained braced frames (BRBF) with moment resisting beam to column connections. Additionally a lateral foundation system is being built with continuous anchor caps in conjunction with tie-down anchors.

The story of theNorthwestToweris one of both timeless design and economic feasibility. The modern design of the tower was developed within a Project Design Charter, which was created to guide design decisions toward a simple functionality that appropriately meets future needs and provides the latest technology for staff and patient care, at a scale and sophistication befitting a major, contemporary, urban medical center.

TheNorthwestTowerdisplays design function, as well as incorporates evidence-based strategies for patient services to reduce stress, length of stay, and enhance communication between caregivers and patients. “These strategies not only provide an optimal care environment for healing, but also supportSt. Joseph’s commitment to patient dignity, the human spirit, and creating healthy communities,” saidTAYLOR’s principal-in-charge Neal Rinella.

In keeping with the social sustainability goals of the project, the new tower incorporates many environmentally sustainable features such as an energy efficient building envelope, which incorporates high performance window glazing, sunshading and well-insulated walls and roof. Mechanical systems also improve energy efficiency by utilizing a 100% outside air system with heat recovery that yields superior indoor air quality and infection control.

“Building a state-of-the-art hospital with complex mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) systems requires the utilization of latest advancements in design and construction technology as well as an experienced and collaborative team,” said McCarthy Project Director Patrick Peterson.

“To meet the challenges of this complex project on an operational medical campus, we are utilizing a combination of Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) and design/build methods to collaboratively harness the talents and insights of all team members and to optimize efficiency through all phases of design, fabrication and construction,” explained Peterson.

TAYLOR, McCarthy and key subcontractor partners are using the following Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools for design and coordination: Revit Architecture, Revit Structures, Revit MEP, AutoCAD MEP 3D, AutoCAD Civil 3D, CADmech, CADpipe, NavisWorks and Google Sketch-up.

“Utilizing these combined BIM applications with an integrated team delivery approach not only will help to identify challenges before they become on-site problems, but it also provides a greater benefit by allowing the entire design and construction team to create and work from a seamless model throughout all stages of the project,” said McCarthy Project Manager Todd Foos. As a result of this collaborative effort, the team has lowered the original target budget by approximately $14.5 million.

“St. Joseph Health System has determined that the best way to understand, evaluate and make decisions at each critical point of the project during design, is through the use of BIM tools. This has streamlined the decision-making process and given us the opportunity to quickly evaluate and analyze “What if” scenarios. The BIM tools are a benefit to all stakeholders on the project team,” explained Jim Bostic, AVP Construction Division, at St Joseph Health System inSouthern California.

The St. Jude Northwest Tower project is scheduled to complete in Summer 2014 and open in Fall 2014.

This AGC award comes on the heels of McCarthy’s placement on the prestigious 2011 Training Magazine Top 125 list and recognition by Corporate University Xchange for training excellence and innovation earlier this year.

“The key to building great projects is building great professionals,” said AGC President Kristine Young. “McCarthy’s leadership training program is an example of how to turn tremendous talent into outstanding professionals.”

Founded as a family-owned business almost 150 years ago, McCarthy is one of the largest 100% employee-owned companies with an Employee Stock Ownership Plan in America today. The firm has long fostered a culture dedicated to continuous improvement, and “Learning” represents one of McCarthy’s six company Core Values.

“McCarthy transitioned from family to employee ownership in 2002,” explained McCarthy Chairman and CEO Mike Bolen. “This significant shift, together with a combination of company growth and retirements of a number of long-time leaders, resulted in our need to more aggressively prepare our high-potential employees for growth. The opportunities at McCarthy are vast and varied, and training these future leaders is an exciting part of our continuing success.”

The McCarthy Foundations of Leadership Program was designed to accelerate the advancement of high performers by challenging them early in their career to take charge of their own development through an orchestrated “peek behind the curtain” at the unique issues faced by the leaders of a multi-billion dollar general contractor. This fast-track approach was also designed to challenge these employees, keep them fully engaged in the company and heighten the overall level of professionalism in the industry.

“Our senior leadership is 100% behind the development of future leaders at McCarthy and actively participate in our Foundations program as instructors,” noted McCarthy Vice President of Human Resources Al Berardi. “We have invested an incredible amount of time to create an active learning experience that is both challenging and meaningful. To be honored by our national association for our efforts is especially meaningful.”
