Soka University of America’s new Soka Performing Arts Center and Academic Building project, which opened in September 2011, recently received Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). The Soka Performing Arts Center, which is located on 1.9 acres of the Soka University campus in Aliso Viejo, serves as a venue in South Orange County for concerts, theater productions, lectures and assemblies, furthering Soka University’s role as a cultural center and community gathering place.

“One of Soka University’s guiding principals is to foster leaders for the creative coexistence of nature and humanity, and the Soka Performing Arts Center project demonstrates this socially responsible ideal to our students,” said Arch Asawa, Soka University’s Vice President for Finance and Administration and CFO. “We deeply appreciate the project team for helping us meet our objective to create a world-class LEED Gold Certified facility.”

McCarthy served as general contractor and Zimmer Gunsul Frasca was the architect for the $73 million project, which included construction of a three-level, 47,836-square-foot Soka Performing Arts Center housing a reception lobby, various support spaces and a 1,000-seat auditorium. McCarthy also built a 48,974-square-footAcademicBuildingwhich is located next to and provides support for the Soka Performing Arts Center. The new four-level academic building houses 11 classrooms, 29 faculty offices, a 150-seat black box theater, four dressing rooms, a rehearsal/dance studio, musician warm-up spaces and other support areas.

To successfully address the LEED aspects of the project, the design and construction team employed 15 LEED accredited professionals, and McCarthy used sustainable construction methods throughout the project. These included: recycling approximately 75 percent of construction waste; maintaining proper indoor air quality; utilizing local labor and ensuring that the subcontractors install the specified “green” materials.

Likewise, the design of these structures incorporates numerous sustainable and energy efficiency solutions. TheSokaPerformingArtsCenterand theAcademicBuildingboth have a green roof and solar panels. The green roof holds three to four inches of soil filled with succulent plants providing sound insulation as well as insulation for heating and cooling. It also absorbs rain water to filter it before it goes into theWoodCanyonwatershed, and it converts carbon dioxide to oxygen. Additionally, a bioswale was built to help manage storm water runoff.

In order to create a space large enough for the green roof with a combination of vegetation and photovoltaic panels arrays as part of the sunshades, the project’s electrical contractor utilized design/build delivery to meet the project’s complex electrical needs. BIM 3D modeling was implemented to successfully coordinate paths and spacing requirements and to improved collaboration with all of the MEP trades. Furthermore, energy modeling simulations were performed, which showed an overall energy cost savings of about 25% over the baseline. To that end, the 140 kW photovoltaic system generates an estimated 15% of the energy needed.

Further energy efficiency solutions included operable windows for climate control in the academic building as well as sensor-controlled lights that turn themselves off in unused rooms. Automatic daylight responsive dimmable lighting controls were installed in all classrooms and both black-box and the Center’s lobbies. A displacement ventilation system was utilized to supply cooler air near the floor, pushing warmer air away from occupants in academic and performance hall spaces.

The Soka Performing Arts Center’s exterior features a glass sunshade structure with 570 panes of laminated safety glass to permit visibility, yet diffuse light and reduce solar heat-gain in the large, all glass lobby. The performance hall also features adjustable floor diffusers below most seats, allowing audience members to adjust airflow. Water-saving features employed include low-flow water fixtures and high-efficiency instantaneous gas water heaters.

Other project team members included Program Manager R.W. Buck and Associates of Rancho Santa Margarita; JAMA of Los Angeles, structural engineer; RBF of Irvine, civil engineer; Syska of Los Angeles, electrical and mechanical engineer; and SWA of Laguna Beach, landscape architect.

“TheSokaUniversityproject team was focused on sustainability from day one and worked hard to make this goal a reality,” explained McCarthy Executive Vice President Mark Mardock. “McCarthy continues to position ourselves as a leader in green construction, and this project is an outstanding example. With this latest certification, McCarthy now has 10 LEED Gold projects on our resume, with more than 20 in the works. In total, McCarthy has completed or underway more than $7 billion in sustainable projects overall.”

McCarthy, a Texas builder for 30 years, has started work on The Park, located over the Woodall Rodgers Freeway between Pearl and Saint Paul streets in downtown Dallas. McCarthy will construct the park on a support structure over the freeway, transforming the site into an urban green area for public use for events, concerts, exercise, education programs and gatherings.

McCarthy’s portion of the project includes construction of the performance stage, Thomas Phifer-designed restaurant, Great Lawn area, dog park, children’s park, botanical gardens, Red Oak allees, Olive Plaza, water features and multiple green areas with open space for visitors.

A leading sustainable builder, McCarthy is dedicated to setting new standards in sustainable construction and will continue its focus on building responsibly throughout the duration of The Park project. The Park will incorporate green technology including a high-efficiency, below-surface water irrigation system that will save nearly 400,000 gallons of water each year, a geothermal heating, ventilation and air conditioning system in the park’s restaurant and many solar-powered lights and trash compactors along pathways.

“The Park is an exciting opportunity to connect Uptown, Downtown and the Dallas Arts District, providing a central gathering space for Dallas,” said McCarthy Texas Division President Mike McWay. “McCarthy is proud to have a role in constructing The Park as Dallas continues to evolve, adapting to the way its residents and visitors are using urban spaces.”

“With less than a year until the Park opens, Dallasites will be eager to watch the McCarthy team add trees, landscaping and amenities to the deck structure,” said Linda Owen, president and CEO of the Woodall Rodgers Park Foundation. “As we watch the transformation of a freeway into beautiful green space, we can all begin to imagine how we will spend time in The Park in 2012.”

McCarthy has worked on numerous other projects in the Arts District area, including the award-winning AT&T Performing Arts Center (AT&T PAC) Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre that was completed in 2009 and the Dallas City Performance Hall that is scheduled for completion in 2012.

The Park, expected to complete in late 2012, is funded through a public, private partnership, including more than $37 million in private donations, $20 million in bond funds from the City of Dallas, $20 million in highway funds from the state and federal government through the Texas Department of Transportation and $16.7 million in federal stimulus funds. The Woodall Rodgers Park Foundation will continue its capital campaign and privately manage, operate and program the park.

On Nov. 11, 2011 Casino Del Sol and the Pascua Yaqui Tribe in Tucson, Ariz., celebrated the completion and grand opening of a $130 million, 161,000-square-foot hotel, spa and convention center addition to their existing casino facility.

The expansion, which began construction only 18 months ago, adds 215 new luxury hotel rooms, along with a conference center that can accommodate up to 2,000 people. The addition also brings a new fine-dining steakhouse that can accommodate up to 100, an international buffet with seating up to 250, an elaborate lobby lounge and bar, a full spa and outdoor pool with sundeck, exercise facilities, a warehouse and a four-level covered parking structure for 1,100 vehicles.

The design and construction team, comprised of McCarthy, international architecture and engineering firm LEO A DALY, and owner’s representative Innovation Project Development (IPD), partnered with the casino’s executive management team and Pascua Yaqui Tribal Council members to create an amenity-rich, Four-Diamond property that creates a destination center for tourists, corporate meetings and conventions, and Tucson-area residents.

“McCarthy and LEO A DALY were selected as our builder and architect because of their long-time partnership with the tribe, their high quality of work while sticking to a budget, and their dedication toward tribal employment,” said Sol Casinos CEO Wendell Long. “We already have the most beautiful casino in Arizona, and with this expansion, our design and construction team have helped us to further enhance our property and bring a new level of service to our guests.”

“The tribe has gone to the next level to create an elegant resort and memorable experiences for visitors,” said Ronn Lansky, associate and executive director for LEO A DALY’s Phoenix office.

The resort’s most prominent design feature, an illuminated copper dome topping the 10-story hotel, serves as a beacon for guests and exemplifies the Tuscan theme found throughout the casino and the resort addition. The dome, built out of perforated copper and housing color-changing LED lights, measures 26 feet in diameter and 26 feet tall and weighs 11,000 pounds. A major construction milestone was celebrated on Feb. 9, 2011, when McCarthy hoisted the massive dome into place atop the hotel, marking the topping-off of the project.

“The design bar has been raised beyond the existing casino, providing new amenities including fine dining, upscale bar and lounge areas, and refined meeting, convention and events spaces,” said Patricia Miller, vice president, managing principal of the Dallas office and corporate director of hospitality for LEO A DALY.

During the 18-month construction schedule, McCarthy worked quickly and efficiently to meet all major deadlines, ultimately delivering the completed hotel guest rooms more than one month early thanks to the firm’s innovative scheduling process. In early October, McCarthy delivered on-time the certificate of occupancy to Casino Del Sol. This expansion project added 500 construction jobs and 300 permanent jobs to the local economy.

The resort incorporated sustainability principles throughout its design and construction, earning it inclusion in the Arizona Hotel & Lodging Association’s Certified Green Lodging Program. Tribal leaders also are participating in a Sustainability Education Empowerment Development (SEED) Initiative that will implement standards to conserve natural resources, reduce waste and decrease pollution.

The Pascua Yaqui Tribe hosted several grand opening events this month, including a dedication ceremony, private access for VIP players, and live musical entertainment. Highlights include:

Nov. 4-7: Soft opening of hotel rooms, PY Steakhouse, Prema lobby bar and Hiapsi spa

Nov. 9: Media Night

Nov. 11: First guest check-in at 11:11 a.m.; afternoon reception at Prema bar and lounge; ribbon-cutting at 5 p.m. and fireworks display at 6 p.m. at Pool Deck; Pepe Aguilar, Alejandro Guzman and Intocable concert at 7:30 p.m. at AVA Amphitheater; Tejano All Stars free concert at 10:30 p.m. at the event center

Nov. 12: Tim McGraw at 7:30 p.m. at AVA Amphitheater; Cheap Trick free concert at 10:30 p.m. at the event center

“We were privileged to work with the tribe and hotel management team on another Casino Del Sol expansion, and it’s a thrill to celebrate its opening with the community,” said Dennis Tucker, executive vice president for McCarthy’s Southwest business services. “The team’s clear vision for the new hotel and conference center provided great direction for us to efficiently construct this major addition, on a property that is already known as a jewel of Tucson.”

McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. one of the nation’s oldest and largest privately-held construction companies and a 100 percent employee-owned business, was honored last week with a 2011 Education Excellence Award from the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC).

Presented during the AGC Training, Education & Development Conference in Kansas City, the Education Excellence Awards recognize the most innovative and collaborative training and development programs in the construction industry. McCarthy was honored in the category of Supervisor-Executive Management for the firm’s Foundations of Leadership Training Program. This AGC award comes on the heels of McCarthy’s placement on the prestigious 2011 Training Magazine Top 125 list and recognition by Corporate University Xchange for training excellence and innovation earlier this year.

“The key to building great projects is building great professionals,” said AGC President Kristine Young. “McCarthy’s leadership training program is an example of how to turn tremendous talent into outstanding professionals.”

Founded as a family-owned business almost 150 years ago, McCarthy is one of the largest 100% employee-owned companies with an Employee Stock Ownership Plan in America today. The firm has long fostered a culture dedicated to continuous improvement, and “Learning” represents one of McCarthy’s six company Core Values.

“McCarthy transitioned from family to employee ownership in 2002,” explained McCarthy Chairman and CEO Mike Bolen. “This significant shift, together with a combination of company growth and retirements of a number of long-time leaders, resulted in our need to more aggressively prepare our high-potential employees for growth. The opportunities at McCarthy are vast and varied, and training these future leaders is an exciting part of our continuing success.”

The McCarthy Foundations of Leadership Program was designed to accelerate the advancement of high performers by challenging them early in their career to take charge of their own development through an orchestrated “peek behind the curtain” at the unique issues faced by the leaders of a multi-billion dollar general contractor. This fast-track approach was also designed to challenge these employees, keep them fully engaged in the company and heighten the overall level of professionalism in the industry.

“Our senior leadership is 100% behind the development of future leaders at McCarthy and actively participate in our Foundations program as instructors,” noted McCarthy Vice President of Human Resources Al Berardi. “We have invested an incredible amount of time to create an active learning experience that is both challenging and meaningful. To be honored by our national association for our efforts is especially meaningful.”

About the Associated General Contractors of America
The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) is the leading association for the construction industry. Operating in partnership with its nationwide network of Chapters, the AGC provides a full range of services satisfying the needs and concerns of its members, thereby improving the quality of construction and protecting the public interest.
About McCarthy
(www.mccarthy.com), one of the nation’s top green commercial builders, has completed the task of getting all of its current LEED Accredited Professionals (AP) to acquire the new specialty accreditation LEED AP BD+C (building design and construction). McCarthy is the largest contractor to date to complete such a significant acquisition through the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI), confirming the builder’s commitment to the new Credentialing Maintenance Program. Credential maintenance is the continuing education completed by LEED Professionals to maintain current knowledge of green building practices and LEED in a constantly evolving industry. Because of McCarthy’s encouragement, approximately 400 of their employees now hold the new LEED AP BD+C credential.

“McCarthy’s commitment to providing its staff with the preeminent designation for professionals — the LEED AP BD+C — shows leadership and a steadfast commitment to transforming the built environment,” said Beth Holst, vice president, GBCI. “Earning a LEED Credential demonstrates a comprehensive and current knowledge of green building technologies and best practices, and is a mark of excellence for green building professionals in the marketplace.”

Over the next two years, all McCarthy LEED AP’s will complete the required 30 hours of training through the McCarthy Green Curriculum to maintain the new credential. Existing green training programs typically focus on design issues. The McCarthy Green Curriculum is unique, presented from the builder’s perspective. This curriculum focuses on what McCarthy and the building team can do during design, construction and operations to have a positive impact on the sustainability of the project.

In addition to employee training, McCarthy’s commitment to sustainability requires continual review of day-to-day operations affecting the environment to look for different ways to do the same or more, while reducing the environmental impact. McCarthy has also implemented the following:

Policies—McCarthy has established office, field, wellness and transportation policies to track and reduce the firm’s impact on the environment. These include use of recycled materials and improving fleet efficiency every year.

Carbon Footprint—McCarthy has adopted a carbon footprint methodology, established a company baseline and is working towards a 5% reduction over the next five years.

Leadership—In addition to sustainable leadership at the national level, each McCarthy project has an identified sustainability leader and champion.

“Green building techniques and materials are being incorporated into every one of our projects today, and clients and partners need a builder they can count on,” explained McCarthy Vice President, Quality and Sustainability Chad Dorgan. “The GBCI program provides a consistent framework for our industry and at the same time provides owners with a green standard they can trust. By upgrading all of our employees, we are providing this same level of consistency for all clients nationwide.”

About McCarthy
McCarthy is one of the nation’s oldest and largest privately held commercial construction companies. More than a decade ago, McCarthy formalized a national in-house green knowledge network to capture and build upon the best green practices across the country. Today, the McCarthy Green Team is comprised of approximately 400 USGBC LEED Accredited Professionals (ranking the company in the top 10 for LEED AP’s by Building Design and Construction and among the nation’s Top 20 Green Construction Companies in America by Engineering News-Record). The firm’s resumé of sustainable projects is valued at over $6 billion. Nationally recognized on the Training 125 list for the firm’s outstanding employee training and development programs, McCarthy is 100 percent employee owned.

The heartbeat of the new Casino Del Sol Hotel & Conference Center in Tucson, Ariz., continues to get stronger as the opening approaches on 11/11/11.

A topping off ceremony involving the placement of the new hotel’s dome was held on Feb. 9 and included McCarthy team members, the casino’s executive management team, the Pascua Yaqui Tribal Council, Tribal Elders and local elected officials.

“We are more than excited about the progress of the hotel, and the dome placement signifies much of the outside work has been completed and is on target for our grand opening on 11/11/11,’’ said Wendell Long, Sol Casinos CEO. “Now that the dome has been placed on top of the hotel, we will continue to work on the inside of the structure. It is going to be an eye-pleasing hotel and a pleasant experience for our guests. It will be simply spectacular.”

He adds, “The project has gone great. We are ahead of schedule and below budget. And in just nine months, we will have a wonderful and beautiful addition to our already stunning casino. There will be nothing like it in Arizona.”

The dome’s unique design and opulence is in line and consistent with the current style and flair of Casino Del Sol. The award was presented during the Training 2011 Conference & Expo in San Diego, Calif., recognizing the top companies based on excellence in employer-sponsored training and development programs. A first-time applicant, McCarthy placed 112th on the prestigious list.

“While many companies are cutting back on training in the current economic climate, McCarthy continues to expand our focus on employee development,” explained McCarthy Chairman and CEO Mike Bolen. “This commitment ensures our builders remain at the forefront of the construction industry. To be included among the Training Top 125 companies in a diverse array of industries is an outstanding honor.”

Lorri Freifeld, editor-in-chief of Training magazine added, “The 2011 Training Top 125 application focused on tying training to achievement of strategic corporate goals and showing demonstrable results. As always, it was a difficult task to choose the winners from the many excellent applications we received. Congratulations to the 2011 winners, who continue to blaze new paths in training design, development, delivery, and measurement.”

Founded as a family owned business almost 150 years ago, McCarthy is one of the largest 100% employee-owned companies in America today. The firm has long fostered a culture dedicated to continuous improvement, and “Learning” represents one of McCarthy’s six company Core Values.

While a formal McCarthy Training Program had been in place for decades, McCarthy formally launched an entirely revamped training program in 2008 under McCarthy Build U. Unusual in the construction industry and among best-in-class training programs outside of the construction industry, McCarthy Build U is a personalized approach to employee development. Core tenets of McCarthy Build U include:

A shared commitment on the part of each employee to begin their training and development on (or even before) Day 1;

A belief that in addition to full-time professional trainers on staff, all employee-owners, from Chairman/CEO down, is a trainer who has valuable knowledge to share;

A focus on blended training vehicles, including instructor-led programs, self-paced online training, hands-on experience simulations and on-the-job training makes the program truly comprehensive;

A well defined development path with significant flexibility based on personal needs;

A development philosophy based on the notion of a two-way street. McCarthy will provide every tool and opportunity for learning and the employee must actively take control of their career and development.

“The McCarthy Build U program provides a balance of structure and flexibility to help each employee meet their individual development needs in alignment with company business objectives,” noted McCarthy Vice President of Human Resources Al Berardi. “This comprehensive approach helps ensure McCarthy builders remain the best in the business.”

About the Training 125

Now in its 11th year, the Training Top 125 ranking is based on myriad benchmarking statistics such as total training budget; percentage of payroll; number of training hours per employee program; goals, evaluation, measurement, and workplace surveys; hours of training per employee annually; and detailed formal programs. The ranking is determined by assessing a range of qualitative and quantitative factors, including financial investment in employee development, the scope of development programs, and how closely such development efforts are linked to business goals and objectives. More information about the 2011 Training Top 125 Award winners may be obtained online at www.trainingmag.com.
