McCarthy Holdings, Inc., parent company to McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. and MC Industrial, Inc., created more than 145 new jobs across the country in 2011, the company announced today. The new hires, which include college-level to executive-level positions, reinforce findings that employee-owned private companies, or “S corporation employee stock ownership plans” (S ESOPs) like McCarthy are resilient, high-performing businesses.

Further growth in 2012 is expected as McCarthy is currently recruiting for more than 60 additional new positions.

“When employees own the company, as we do at McCarthy, they operate with increased motivation, and that in turn enables continued growth and expansion,” commented McCarthy President and Chief Operating Officer Derek Glanvill. “It is thanks to our culture of ownership and the dedication of our employee owners that we have been able to increase our operations this past year.”

According to a report from Georgetown University, S ESOPs like McCarthy have been job creators even in tough economic times. While overall employment in the U.S. fell by nearly three percent in 2008, employment at surveyed private, employee-owned firms rose by nearly two percent.

Further, according to a University of Pennsylvania study, S ESOP companies like McCarthy create not only employee motivation and success, but also $14 billion in new savings for workers each year that they otherwise would not have. This is because profits of the company flow into the ESOP (retirement) accounts of the workers. Moreover, a survey from the National Center for Employee Ownership reported that S ESOP employees can have retirement account balances three to five times higher than the average 401 (k) or other defined contribution plans. This helps to explain why S ESOP company employees can be so successful, as compared with most working Americans who—according to a recent AP poll—think they will lack enough money to live comfortably in retirement.

“Employee-owners work smarter and harder because of their commitment and investment in the business,” said Greg Klein, chairman of the board of directors of the Employee-Owned S Corporations of America. “McCarthy is a prime example of what S corporation ESOP companies can do for workers and for our economy.”

About ESCA
The Employee-Owned S Corporations of America (“ESCA”) is the Washington, DC voice for employee-owned S corporations. ESCA’s exclusive mission is to preserve and protect S corporation ESOPs and the benefits they provide to the employees who own them. These companies have an important story to tell policymakers about the tremendous success of the S ESOP structure in generating long-term retirement savings for working Americans and their families. ESCA provides the vehicle and the voice for these efforts. ESCA represents employee-owners in every state in the nation.

About McCarthy
McCarthy’s receipt of top honors in St. Louis comes on the heels of the builder’s selection as a Healthiest Employer finalist in Sacramento and taking the number two spot in the Bay Area.

“McCarthy’s never-ending mission is to be The Best Builder in America,” commented McCarthy President and Chief Operating Officer Derek Glanvill. “As a 100 percent employee-owned company , our holistic approach to wellness flows logically from this mission. In addition, as healthcare costs in America soar, McCarthy employee-owners understand the impact this can have on our business and the role they can play in helping to manage this. Focusing on wellness together, we can to be more productive partners, better family members and in turn potentially control rising costs through prevention.”

Developed and launched in 2010, McCarthy Build for Life is a comprehensive wellness program designed to encourage all employees and their families to strive toward optimal mental, physical and emotional well-being. The program focuses on four key areas: Awareness, Prevention, Activity, and Lifestyle & Stress.

“When it comes to our construction projects, our approach has always been to invest a significant effort up front to prevent issues before they occur,” continued Glanvill. “We have extended this same proactive approach to our Build for Life program, encouraging employees to make wellness a part of their everyday lives.”

To jump start McCarthy’s wellness program in 2010, the company launched an Activity Challenge. All employees received a free pedometer and used an online step tracking program to log daily steps. More than 50% of employees participated in the program, logging 184,974,999 steps. The 2011 Activity Challenge, now including spouses and partners, was completed July 8, 2011 with participants logging 222,775,416 steps.

“The McCarthy Build for Life Program is a grassroots program, supported by Wellness Champions in each McCarthy and MC Industrial office,” explained McCarthy Vice President, Human Resources Al Berardi. “These Champions communicate with employees in their region and encourage involvement.”

Key program features include:

Rewards program designed to help increase the health of all McCarthy partners while, at the same time, controlling healthcare costs over the long-term. Employees and their spouse/partner can earn points for completing proactive, health-related activities that will be directly applied toward reduced medical insurance premiums;

Complimentary health screenings for McCarthy employees and spouses/partners, including blood pressure screening, BMI/waist circumference checks, cholesterol/HDL/Glucose screenings, and Prostate Specific Antigen screenings;

Quarterly wellness newsletter delivered to homes of all employees, in partnership with the Mayo Clinic, and discount subscriptions to health-related publications;

Regular educational wellness webinars available to employees and their families;

Wellness areas in all main office locations and at all-employee biannual meetings featuring material on health, nutrition, activity and stress/lifestyle management;

Wide array of company-sponsored wellness employee events

“McCarthy has made great strides in focusing on improving employee health both here in St. Louis and across America,” concluded Glanvill. “This award honors many leading St. Louis organizations, and McCarthy is proud to be included in this group.”

McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. one of the nation’s oldest and largest privately-held construction companies and a 100 percent employee-owned business, was honored last week with a 2011 Education Excellence Award from the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC).

Presented during the AGC Training, Education & Development Conference in Kansas City, the Education Excellence Awards recognize the most innovative and collaborative training and development programs in the construction industry. McCarthy was honored in the category of Supervisor-Executive Management for the firm’s Foundations of Leadership Training Program. This AGC award comes on the heels of McCarthy’s placement on the prestigious 2011 Training Magazine Top 125 list and recognition by Corporate University Xchange for training excellence and innovation earlier this year.

“The key to building great projects is building great professionals,” said AGC President Kristine Young. “McCarthy’s leadership training program is an example of how to turn tremendous talent into outstanding professionals.”

Founded as a family-owned business almost 150 years ago, McCarthy is one of the largest 100% employee-owned companies with an Employee Stock Ownership Plan in America today. The firm has long fostered a culture dedicated to continuous improvement, and “Learning” represents one of McCarthy’s six company Core Values.

“McCarthy transitioned from family to employee ownership in 2002,” explained McCarthy Chairman and CEO Mike Bolen. “This significant shift, together with a combination of company growth and retirements of a number of long-time leaders, resulted in our need to more aggressively prepare our high-potential employees for growth. The opportunities at McCarthy are vast and varied, and training these future leaders is an exciting part of our continuing success.”

The McCarthy Foundations of Leadership Program was designed to accelerate the advancement of high performers by challenging them early in their career to take charge of their own development through an orchestrated “peek behind the curtain” at the unique issues faced by the leaders of a multi-billion dollar general contractor. This fast-track approach was also designed to challenge these employees, keep them fully engaged in the company and heighten the overall level of professionalism in the industry.

“Our senior leadership is 100% behind the development of future leaders at McCarthy and actively participate in our Foundations program as instructors,” noted McCarthy Vice President of Human Resources Al Berardi. “We have invested an incredible amount of time to create an active learning experience that is both challenging and meaningful. To be honored by our national association for our efforts is especially meaningful.”

About the Associated General Contractors of America
The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) is the leading association for the construction industry. Operating in partnership with its nationwide network of Chapters, the AGC provides a full range of services satisfying the needs and concerns of its members, thereby improving the quality of construction and protecting the public interest. The AGC represents more than 33,000 leading firms in the industry, including general contractors, specialty contractors, and service providers and suppliers.

About McCarthy
McCarthy is one of the nation’s oldest and largest domestic general contractors. While a formal McCarthy Training Program had been in place for decades, McCarthy formally launched an entirely revamped training program in 2008 under McCarthy Build U. Unusual in the construction industry and among best-in-class training programs outside of the construction industry, the McCarthy Build U framework provides the company with the structure, alignment, centralization and flexibility needed to personalize training to meet both individual and business needs. Repeatedly honored as a Best Place to Work, McCarthy is 100 percent employee owned.

McCarthy recently completed construction on the new 2.3 million-square-foot Terminal 3 parking structure at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas. The eight-level parking structure provides an additional 6,000 parking spaces for travelers of the soon to be completed Terminal 3.

Construction of the $121.7 million parking structure began in December 2008 and McCarthy logged more than 300,000 man hours of self-performed concrete work with no loss of time injuries. One of the nation’s leading parking structure builders, McCarthy’s successful completion of several key project milestones enabled the firm to deliver the project on time and on budget.

“I have personally worked on several hundred parking projects, and the McCarran T3 Garage stands above them all as the most successful project,” said Robert E. Stanley, director of operations for Walker Parking Consultants.
“McCarthy was able to deliver another high quality, constructed garage on time and on budget, and I am glad to have had the McCarthy team on board.”

Construction of the parking structure consisted of 126 structural post-tensioned garage deck pours with an additional 14 pours for the structure’s circular concrete helix entry ramp. McCarthy maintained an accelerated schedule by pouring one concrete deck every other day. Additionally, the project team used pre-fabricated reinforcing cages in the concrete decks and a concrete mixture that achieved a very high, early strength. A schedule was also put in place to utilize the number of sets of formwork to help gain days, which helped lead to an early completion. McCarthy used 3,703 tons of elevated architectural precast concrete which is the equivalent of 46 commercial 737 aircrafts.

The McCarthy team also performed several other construction details that are not typically done on an average parking structure. For instance, crews painted the structure’s overhead and ceilings and installed several high-end finishes including:

4,200 silver metallic and desert rose aluminum metal panels

315 decorative precast panels

1,972 cubic yards of tan-colored concrete

3,000 interior lights

“I am extremely proud of the team that we put together on this project,” said Paul Dudzinski, McCarthy project manager. “They have done a tremendous job of working together and working safe given the overall magnitude of the project and the complexity of the self-perform concrete. We have a really sharp team that learned even more as it relates to concrete work, and has produced a very high-quality concrete structure that I am proud to put McCarthy’s name on.”

Located just north of the new Terminal 3 building, the eight-level-car parking structure is one of the largest parking facilities in the United States, spanning approximately 270’ wide by 1024’ long. In addition to providing spaces for employee parking, valet parking, and both short and long term public parking, the project also includes construction of an 11,275-square-foot, single level office building, toll plaza and roadway for passenger pickup and drop off.

About McCarthy

McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. (www.mccarthy.com), one of the nation’s top green commercial builders, has completed the task of getting all of its current LEED Accredited Professionals (AP) to acquire the new specialty accreditation LEED AP BD+C (building design and construction). McCarthy is the largest contractor to date to complete such a significant acquisition through the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI), confirming the builder’s commitment to the new Credentialing Maintenance Program. Credential maintenance is the continuing education completed by LEED Professionals to maintain current knowledge of green building practices and LEED in a constantly evolving industry. Because of McCarthy’s encouragement, approximately 400 of their employees now hold the new LEED AP BD+C credential.

“McCarthy’s commitment to providing its staff with the preeminent designation for professionals — the LEED AP BD+C — shows leadership and a steadfast commitment to transforming the built environment,” said Beth Holst, vice president, GBCI. “Earning a LEED Credential demonstrates a comprehensive and current knowledge of green building technologies and best practices, and is a mark of excellence for green building professionals in the marketplace.”

Over the next two years, all McCarthy LEED AP’s will complete the required 30 hours of training through the McCarthy Green Curriculum to maintain the new credential. Existing green training programs typically focus on design issues. The McCarthy Green Curriculum is unique, presented from the builder’s perspective. This curriculum focuses on what McCarthy and the building team can do during design, construction and operations to have a positive impact on the sustainability of the project.

In addition to employee training, McCarthy’s commitment to sustainability requires continual review of day-to-day operations affecting the environment to look for different ways to do the same or more, while reducing the environmental impact. McCarthy has also implemented the following:

Policies—McCarthy has established office, field, wellness and transportation policies to track and reduce the firm’s impact on the environment. These include use of recycled materials and improving fleet efficiency every year.

Carbon Footprint—McCarthy has adopted a carbon footprint methodology, established a company baseline and is working towards a 5% reduction over the next five years.

Leadership—In addition to sustainable leadership at the national level, each McCarthy project has an identified sustainability leader and champion.

“Green building techniques and materials are being incorporated into every one of our projects today, and clients and partners need a builder they can count on,” explained McCarthy Vice President, Quality and Sustainability Chad Dorgan. “The GBCI program provides a consistent framework for our industry and at the same time provides owners with a green standard they can trust. By upgrading all of our employees, we are providing this same level of consistency for all clients nationwide.”

About McCarthy
McCarthy is one of the nation’s oldest and largest privately held commercial construction companies. More than a decade ago, McCarthy formalized a national in-house green knowledge network to capture and build upon the best green practices across the country. Today, the McCarthy Green Team is comprised of approximately 400 USGBC LEED Accredited Professionals (ranking the company in the top 10 for LEED AP’s by Building Design and Construction and among the nation’s Top 20 Green Construction Companies in America by Engineering News-Record). The firm’s resumé of sustainable projects is valued at over $6 billion. Nationally recognized on the Training 125 list for the firm’s outstanding employee training and development programs, McCarthy is 100 percent employee owned.

McCarthy, one of the nation’s largest employee-owned construction companies, will be honored this weekend as a Start! Fit-Friendly Company by the American Heart Association (AHA). McCarthy Central Division President Scott Wittkop will receive the Gold-level award during the AHA 2011 Metro St. Louis Start! Heart Walk opening festivities on Saturday, May 14 in Busch Stadium. Start! Fit-Friendly Companies are recognized by the AHA as employers who go above and beyond when it comes to employee health.

“McCarthy has a strong national partnership with the American Heart Association,” commented Tracy Brazelton, AHA executive director in St. Louis. “As a company, they have made great strides in focusing on improving employee health both here in St. Louis and across America. This award recognizes the best-of-the-best companies, and McCarthy is certainly one of these.”

Developed and launched in 2010, McCarthy Build for Life is a comprehensive wellness program designed to encourage all employees and their families to strive toward optimal mental, physical and emotional well-being. The program focuses on four key areas: awareness, prevention, activity, and lifestyle & stress.

“When it comes to our construction projects, our approach has always been to invest a significant effort up front to prevent issues before they occur,” noted McCarthy President and COO Derek Glanvill. “We have extended this same proactive approach to our Build for Life program, encouraging employees to make wellness a part of their everyday lives.”

To jump start McCarthy’s wellness program in 2010, the company launched an Activity Challenge. All 1,400 employees received a free pedometer and used an online step tracking program to log daily steps over a 3-month period. More than 50% of employees participated in the program, logging 184,974,999 steps. The 2011 Activity Challenge, expanded to include spouses and partners, began on May 1.

Designed as a grassroots program, McCarthy Build for Life is supported by Wellness Champions in each McCarthy office who communicate to employees in their region. Key McCarthy Build for Life program features include:

Regular wellness webinars available to employees and their families

Quarterly wellness newsletter delivered to homes of all employees, in partnership with the Mayo Clinic, and discount subscriptions to other health-related publications

Complimentary health screenings for McCarthy employees and spouses/partners, including blood pressure screening, BMI/waist circumference checks, cholesterol/HDL/Glucose screenings, and Prostate Specific Antigen screenings

McCarthy was honored this week with a 2011 Corporate University Xchange (CorpU) Award for Excellence and Innovation. This award recognizes outstanding work in corporate learning and talent development and comes on the heels of McCarthy’s placement on the prestigious 2011 Training 125 list earlier this year. The awards were presented during the Global Leadership Congress 2011, a 3-day symposium co-sponsored by CorpU and the University of Pennsylvania. A first-time applicant, McCarthy was honored with a Best Practice award in the Launching Category.

The CorpU Awards salute corporate and government learning organizations that create exciting, impactful programs resulting in measurable improvements in employee and business performance. Since 1999, the Awards, given by CorpU, the leading provider of corporate education research, benchmarking and advisory services for the enterprise learning marketplace, have set the standard for corporate learning.

“The winning programs show how important learning excellence is in enabling companies to execute their business strategy,” said Peter McAteer, CEO of CorpU. “We congratulate them.”

“Operating in today’s business world is more complicated than ever,” commented McCarthy Chairman and CEO Mike Bolen. “Through McCarthy Build U® we are able to provide our employee-owners with a comprehensive training and development program designed to result in both short- and long-term success. To be included among this year’s CorpU Xchange award winners is truly an honor.”

Founded as a family owned business almost 150 years ago, McCarthy is one of the largest 100% employee-owned companies in America today. The firm has long fostered a culture dedicated to continuous improvement, and “Learning” represents one of McCarthy’s six company Core Values.

About Corporate University Xchange
Corporate University Xchange is a private membership of senior learning and talent executives. Founded in 1997, members have access to cutting-edge research, practitioner-tested tools, and expertly facilitated peer-to-peer networking.

After six months of planning, permitting and construction Street Teens, a non-profit, volunteer-based organization dedicated to helping homeless and at-risk teens in Southern Nevada, finally has a new larger facility to help homeless teens in the valley. With the help of McCarthy and many community partners donating their time and talents, volunteers successfully converted a residential building into a 4,000-square-foot drop-in center.
Crews had to cut into existing concrete slabs to install new underground lines and renovations included demolition, reframing of the exterior and interior structure, stucco repairs, roofing, installing new electrical, HVAC systems, duct work, plumbing, fixtures, drywall, paint, doors & hardware, trim, and finishes. Additionally, more than $50,000 of site work and landscaping upgrades, were completed to achieve a Certificate of Occupancy.

“This facility has been worth the wait,” said Lisa Preston, executive director of Street Teens. “We can now accommodate more youth than previously, and we currently anticipate seeing 25- 35 youth per day for our services.”

Street Teens had previously rented a facility and was forced to relocate. That is when Paul Dudzinski, project manager for McCarthy, stepped in to help the organization look for a new building. He personally provided pro bono construction manager services.

“McCarthy had been involved with the Street Teens with past events and we knew of their situation,” explains Dudzinski. “I knew from experience that renovations are not always easy and whichever building they chose to purchase would require someone to help guide them through the process.”

Dudzinski helped advise them of the required changes to the residential facility and approximate costs, and began reaching out to project partners and skilled tradesman to provide services of materials as a donation or discount. The overall project budget was $159,000. McCarthy managed the project costs, secured a number of donated services and materials, and brought the project in approximately 10% under budget.

“I am extremely proud of the fact that we were able to complete this project and additional requirements within the budget that was established more than two years ago. Everyone involved really worked together to create a special place for this worthwhile organization,” added Dudzinski.

Now open, the new facility features a larger computer lab, laundry room, restroom and shower facilities, as well as larger offices and kitchen for meals, including added storage room space.

“This amazing transformation could not have happened had it not been for McCarthy’s patience and guidance,” exclaims Preston.

In addition to McCarthy, a special thank you to all team members who played a key role in the project: Pugsley Simpson Coulter Architects, Smedco Engineering, Copper Creek Construction, West Coast Concrete, 3 Brothers Masonry, Interstate Plumbing and Air Conditioning, D.I. Electric, Stargate Plumbing, T M Barth Landscaping, Painters Local, Discount Dumpster, Blue Star Barricade and Traffic Control, Nova Engineering, Alcal-Arcade, Penhall Co.
