McCarthy Holdings, Inc., parent company to McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. and MC Industrial, Inc., created more than 145 new jobs across the country in 2011, the company announced today. The new hires, which include college-level to executive-level positions, reinforce findings that employee-owned private companies, or “S corporation employee stock ownership plans” (S ESOPs) like McCarthy are resilient, high-performing businesses.

Further growth in 2012 is expected as McCarthy is currently recruiting for more than 60 additional new positions.

“When employees own the company, as we do at McCarthy, they operate with increased motivation, and that in turn enables continued growth and expansion,” commented McCarthy President and Chief Operating Officer Derek Glanvill. “It is thanks to our culture of ownership and the dedication of our employee owners that we have been able to increase our operations this past year.”

According to a report from Georgetown University, S ESOPs like McCarthy have been job creators even in tough economic times. While overall employment in the U.S. fell by nearly three percent in 2008, employment at surveyed private, employee-owned firms rose by nearly two percent.

Further, according to a University of Pennsylvania study, S ESOP companies like McCarthy create not only employee motivation and success, but also $14 billion in new savings for workers each year that they otherwise would not have. This is because profits of the company flow into the ESOP (retirement) accounts of the workers. Moreover, a survey from the National Center for Employee Ownership reported that S ESOP employees can have retirement account balances three to five times higher than the average 401 (k) or other defined contribution plans. This helps to explain why S ESOP company employees can be so successful, as compared with most working Americans who—according to a recent AP poll—think they will lack enough money to live comfortably in retirement.

“Employee-owners work smarter and harder because of their commitment and investment in the business,” said Greg Klein, chairman of the board of directors of the Employee-Owned S Corporations of America. “McCarthy is a prime example of what S corporation ESOP companies can do for workers and for our economy.”

About ESCA
The Employee-Owned S Corporations of America (“ESCA”) is the Washington, DC voice for employee-owned S corporations. ESCA’s exclusive mission is to preserve and protect S corporation ESOPs and the benefits they provide to the employees who own them. These companies have an important story to tell policymakers about the tremendous success of the S ESOP structure in generating long-term retirement savings for working Americans and their families. ESCA provides the vehicle and the voice for these efforts. ESCA represents employee-owners in every state in the nation.

About McCarthy

McCarthy recently distributed $60,000 in grants via the firm’s Heart Hats community outreach program to six local nonprofits that serve families and children in need in Maricopa County.

The 23nd annual McCarthy Heart Hats Charity Golf Classic was held Fri., Dec. 9, at the We-Ko-Pa Golf Club in Fort McDowell, Ariz. The annual golf tournament raises funds for McCarthy Heart Hats grant awardees and this year, the Heart Hats committee selected Family Promise of Greater Phoenix and Angels on Patrol as recipients of the 2011 McCarthy Heart Hats grants. Each organization received $20,000.

“Once again, our Heart Hats committee wanted to focus on nonprofits that support children and families experiencing dramatic economic need,” said Lani Calbert, chair of McCarthy’s Southwest Heart Hats committee. “After interviewing six finalist organizations, it was clear that our grantees serve some of our Valley’s most vulnerable residents and our grants would make a significant impact towards aiding the community.”

Family Promise of Greater Phoenix provides emergency shelter, transitional apartments, meals and support to homeless families. The $20,000 Heart Hats grant will be used to replace the single-pane windows in the housing shelter with commercial-grade, double-pane windows, which will provide a safer environment for the residents, in addition to making them more energy efficient. Earlier this year, McCarthy Heart Hats volunteers renovated a laundry room facility at Family Promise’s Family Center in Scottsdale.

Angels on Patrol will use its $20,000 grant to support families in crisis and youth who have either been abused or neglected and/or whose caregivers are facing extreme financial hardship as identified byPhoenix police officers.

“I want to express my sincere appreciation for the Heart Hats grant awarded to Angels on Patrol,” said Lt. Jacqui MacConnell with the Phoenix Police Department who founded the organization after her squad rescued two 5-year-old twins living in a cage and their 8-year-old brother in 2003. “I look forward to letting you know about all the children and families that we will be able to assist with the grant money.”

Four other nonprofits – Phoenix Day, Lauren’s Institute, All About Us Kids and Full Circle Help – were finalists for the grants and received $5,000 each. Prior recipients of Heart Hats grants include UMOM New Day Centers, Phoenix Youth at Risk, Habitat for Humanity, Salute a Soldier Foundation, Gabriel’s Angels, Tempe/Kyrene Communities in Schools and Crisis Nursery.

About McCarthy Heart Hats
The McCarthy Heart Hats community involvement program is dedicated to encouraging, supporting and recognizing McCarthy employees’ volunteer efforts in a variety of causes to ensure real needs are being met in communities where employees live and work. McCarthy employees are as passionate about building better communities as they are about construction. In addition to recognizing outstanding employee volunteers and providing a company-wide paid volunteer day, McCarthy Heart Hats volunteers donate countless hours of in-kind services and monetary contributions to improve communities each year.

On Nov. 11, 2011 Casino Del Sol and the Pascua Yaqui Tribe in Tucson, Ariz., celebrated the completion and grand opening of a $130 million, 161,000-square-foot hotel, spa and convention center addition to their existing casino facility.

The expansion, which began construction only 18 months ago, adds 215 new luxury hotel rooms, along with a conference center that can accommodate up to 2,000 people. The addition also brings a new fine-dining steakhouse that can accommodate up to 100, an international buffet with seating up to 250, an elaborate lobby lounge and bar, a full spa and outdoor pool with sundeck, exercise facilities, a warehouse and a four-level covered parking structure for 1,100 vehicles.

The design and construction team, comprised of McCarthy, international architecture and engineering firm LEO A DALY, and owner’s representative Innovation Project Development (IPD), partnered with the casino’s executive management team and Pascua Yaqui Tribal Council members to create an amenity-rich, Four-Diamond property that creates a destination center for tourists, corporate meetings and conventions, and Tucson-area residents.

“McCarthy and LEO A DALY were selected as our builder and architect because of their long-time partnership with the tribe, their high quality of work while sticking to a budget, and their dedication toward tribal employment,” said Sol Casinos CEO Wendell Long. “We already have the most beautiful casino in Arizona, and with this expansion, our design and construction team have helped us to further enhance our property and bring a new level of service to our guests.”

“The tribe has gone to the next level to create an elegant resort and memorable experiences for visitors,” said Ronn Lansky, associate and executive director for LEO A DALY’s Phoenix office.

The resort’s most prominent design feature, an illuminated copper dome topping the 10-story hotel, serves as a beacon for guests and exemplifies the Tuscan theme found throughout the casino and the resort addition. The dome, built out of perforated copper and housing color-changing LED lights, measures 26 feet in diameter and 26 feet tall and weighs 11,000 pounds. A major construction milestone was celebrated on Feb. 9, 2011, when McCarthy hoisted the massive dome into place atop the hotel, marking the topping-off of the project.

“The design bar has been raised beyond the existing casino, providing new amenities including fine dining, upscale bar and lounge areas, and refined meeting, convention and events spaces,” said Patricia Miller, vice president, managing principal of the Dallas office and corporate director of hospitality for LEO A DALY.

During the 18-month construction schedule, McCarthy worked quickly and efficiently to meet all major deadlines, ultimately delivering the completed hotel guest rooms more than one month early thanks to the firm’s innovative scheduling process. In early October, McCarthy delivered on-time the certificate of occupancy to Casino Del Sol. This expansion project added 500 construction jobs and 300 permanent jobs to the local economy.

The resort incorporated sustainability principles throughout its design and construction, earning it inclusion in the Arizona Hotel & Lodging Association’s Certified Green Lodging Program. Tribal leaders also are participating in a Sustainability Education Empowerment Development (SEED) Initiative that will implement standards to conserve natural resources, reduce waste and decrease pollution.

The Pascua Yaqui Tribe hosted several grand opening events this month, including a dedication ceremony, private access for VIP players, and live musical entertainment. Highlights include:

Nov. 4-7: Soft opening of hotel rooms, PY Steakhouse, Prema lobby bar and Hiapsi spa

Nov. 9: Media Night

Nov. 11: First guest check-in at 11:11 a.m.; afternoon reception at Prema bar and lounge; ribbon-cutting at 5 p.m. and fireworks display at 6 p.m. at Pool Deck; Pepe Aguilar, Alejandro Guzman and Intocable concert at 7:30 p.m. at AVA Amphitheater; Tejano All Stars free concert at 10:30 p.m. at the event center

Nov. 12: Tim McGraw at 7:30 p.m. at AVA Amphitheater; Cheap Trick free concert at 10:30 p.m. at the event center

“We were privileged to work with the tribe and hotel management team on another Casino Del Sol expansion, and it’s a thrill to celebrate its opening with the community,” said Dennis Tucker, executive vice president for McCarthy’s Southwest business services. “The team’s clear vision for the new hotel and conference center provided great direction for us to efficiently construct this major addition, on a property that is already known as a jewel of Tucson.”

Developed and launched in 2010, McCarthy Build for Life is a comprehensive wellness program designed to encourage all employees and their families to strive toward optimal mental, physical and emotional well-being. The program focuses on four key areas: Awareness, Prevention, Activity, and Lifestyle & Stress.

McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. one of the nation’s oldest and largest privately-held construction companies and a 100 percent employee-owned business, was honored last week with a 2011 Education Excellence Award from the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC).

Presented during the AGC Training, Education & Development Conference in Kansas City, the Education Excellence Awards recognize the most innovative and collaborative training and development programs in the construction industry. McCarthy was honored in the category of Supervisor-Executive Management for the firm’s Foundations of Leadership Training Program. This AGC award comes on the heels of McCarthy’s placement on the prestigious 2011 Training Magazine Top 125 list and recognition by Corporate University Xchange for training excellence and innovation earlier this year.

“The key to building great projects is building great professionals,” said AGC President Kristine Young. “McCarthy’s leadership training program is an example of how to turn tremendous talent into outstanding professionals.”

Founded as a family-owned business almost 150 years ago, McCarthy is one of the largest 100% employee-owned companies with an Employee Stock Ownership Plan in America today. The firm has long fostered a culture dedicated to continuous improvement, and “Learning” represents one of McCarthy’s six company Core Values.

“McCarthy transitioned from family to employee ownership in 2002,” explained McCarthy Chairman and CEO Mike Bolen. “This significant shift, together with a combination of company growth and retirements of a number of long-time leaders, resulted in our need to more aggressively prepare our high-potential employees for growth. The opportunities at McCarthy are vast and varied, and training these future leaders is an exciting part of our continuing success.”

The McCarthy Foundations of Leadership Program was designed to accelerate the advancement of high performers by challenging them early in their career to take charge of their own development through an orchestrated “peek behind the curtain” at the unique issues faced by the leaders of a multi-billion dollar general contractor. This fast-track approach was also designed to challenge these employees, keep them fully engaged in the company and heighten the overall level of professionalism in the industry.

“Our senior leadership is 100% behind the development of future leaders at McCarthy and actively participate in our Foundations program as instructors,” noted McCarthy Vice President of Human Resources Al Berardi. “We have invested an incredible amount of time to create an active learning experience that is both challenging and meaningful. To be honored by our national association for our efforts is especially meaningful.”

About the Associated General Contractors of America
The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) is the leading association for the construction industry. Operating in partnership with its nationwide network of Chapters, the AGC provides a full range of services satisfying the needs and concerns of its members, thereby improving the quality of construction and protecting the public interest. The AGC represents more than 33,000 leading firms in the industry, including general contractors, specialty contractors, and service providers and suppliers.

About McCarthy
McCarthy is one of the nation’s oldest and largest domestic general contractors. While a formal McCarthy Training Program had been in place for decades, McCarthy formally launched an entirely revamped training program in 2008 under McCarthy Build U. Unusual in the construction industry and among best-in-class training programs outside of the construction industry, the McCarthy Build U framework provides the company with the structure, alignment, centralization and flexibility needed to personalize training to meet both individual and business needs. Repeatedly honored as a Best Place to Work, McCarthy is 100 percent employee owned.

With cooking shows like “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Top Chef” and “The Naked Chef” receiving top TV ratings, today’s high school students are eager to learn more about the culinary arts. In response to this heightened interest, the Tempe Union High School District offers its students specialized education in the culinary arts. Two high schools within the district – McClintock and Mountain Pointe – recently received upgraded kitchen facilities that rival the environments seen on these top TV shows.

“Our culinary arts programs are extremely popular with students and provide them with career readiness skills in an environment that mimics a commercial kitchen similar to what you would find in a restaurant,” said Nori Cannell, Director of Guidance and Career and Technical Education for the Tempe Union High School District. “After completing these classes at their high school, many students continue their secondary culinary education at East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT), enroll in a cooperative education class their senior year and work a paid internship in a culinary setting, or receive scholarships to attend college or specialty schools after they graduate.”

The high school renovations were completed by Tempe-based McCarthy Building Companies in a compressed 60-day timeframe over summer break. McCarthy took two former home economics classrooms and revamped them into state-of-the-art culinary academies, including stainless steel countertops, industrial hoods, gas ranges and convection ovens, industrial dishwashers, reach-in freezers and coolers; and prep sinks.

“From a construction perspective, these classroom remodels were challenging due to the extremely tight schedule,” said Rob Langhoff, Senior Vice President of Education Services at McCarthy. “The students were never impacted by the construction. This is the third culinary remodel we’ve done for the district and the new classrooms truly reflect a state-of-the-art, industrial kitchen space.”

Each 2,200-square-foot classroom was completed with a kitchen for teaching that includes student tables and seating. There is also a flat screen, camera and microphone used by the instructor to ensure all students can see and hear the presentation (cooking lessons are recorded and can be accessed by the students outside of class). There are also six student cooking areas in each classroom with versatile stainless steel carts for preparation and electricity cords hanging from the ceiling for easy access to equipment.

The district utilized EVIT satellite funding to complete the renovations, which cost approximately $500,000 at each school. Similar renovations at two additional schools – Desert Vista and Marcos de Niza – have been put on hold for at least a year due to budget cuts. Corona del Sol and Tempe High School underwent similar renovations more than a year ago.

McCarthy Heart Hats, the community involvement arm of McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., is seeking nonprofit applicants in the Phoenix area to receive the proceeds from its annual golf tournament, which will be hosted on Dec. 9, 2011, at We-Ko-Pa Golf Club in Fort McDowell, Ariz.
This year, the McCarthy Heart Hats Golf Tournament proceeds will be dedicated to those nonprofits that support children and families experiencing dramatic economic need. Multiple organizations will be selected as recipients. Maricopa County 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations are invited to apply for the funds now until Sept. 16 at the grant website:

The McCarthy Heart Hats community outreach program is dedicated to ensuring real community needs are being met through hands-on activities and financial support.

McCarthy’s Unified Plant Expansion (UP05B) project located at 91st Avenue in Phoenix was recently named the recipient of the “Public Works Project of the Year” in the Environment category by the American Public Works Association (APWA) — Arizona Chapter.

The UP05B expansion project, a 25.5 million gallon per day wastewater treatment plant, was also sent to APWA National to compete for the National Public Works Project of the Year. The APWA Arizona Chapter presented the award to the project team at its 2011 Statewide Conference on August 9, 2011 at the Phoenix Convention Center. The award recognizes excellence in the partnership between the contractor, engineer and managing agency in working together to complete public works projects.

“We’re honored that this project has been recognized as the Public Works Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association Arizona Chapter,” said Shawn Ingram, McCarthy project director. “Working together with Malcolm Pirnie and the city of Phoenix, we created a one-team approach that allowed us not only to eliminate waste in project operations, but also develop a dynamic solution. The fact that it is now being considered for the national award is a testament to this true collaboration.”

The UP05B expansion project was initiated in 2005 as a five-city Sub-Regional Operating Group (SROG) agreement led by the city of Phoenix. It is an “end of line” facility for influent wastewater processing serving Phoenix, Tempe, Glendale, Scottsdale and Mesa. The new facility, which increases the capacity for processing influent wastewater, used the Construction Management at Risk delivery method for the $106 million project and was completed under budget and earlier than expected.

Major aspects of the facility expansion included construction of grit influent and effluent channels, additional bar screen and grit cyclone and washers, a state-of-the-art odor control facility, construction of two primary and two secondary sediment basins and along with process air blowers for two new aeration basins. The facility also received an expanded polymer building and chemical distribution enhancements.

“The level of coordination and communication by McCarthy on UP05B allowed for a large amount of work to be completed with minimal impact upon operations of the facility,” said Rick Shane, construction project manager for the city of Phoenix. “The advanced planning also afforded plant staff to continue with scheduled maintenance activities, as well as save money for our residents, a vital concern in these tough economic times.”

Construction of the project involved more than 500,000 man hours of labor over 2.5 years, peaking with 230 craft personnel on site per day. McCarthy performed 258,000 man hours without a single recordable incident and the overall project’s recordable rate for the entire workforce was below .80.

This will increase YRMC’s current 333-bed capacity to 369 beds. The project will provide greater patient and family satisfaction by expanding our offering of private patient rooms.

“Our Board of Directors made a wise strategic decision in early 2002 when they approved and invested in a facility that included three floors of shelled space that could be developed when community growth and needs dictated it,” said Pat Walz, YRMC president and CEO. “The decision to expand the fourth floor space at this time is the result of consistently high winter patient volumes, especially in 2011. We continually strive to provide the highest quality of care and patient satisfaction, and believe that this bed space will provide both.”

A project of this size is typically a seven month process. However, this project is on an accelerated schedule with construction expected to complete in just over three months, the time frame between busy seasons, to meet the demands of YRMC’s winter season and to ensure as little patient disruption as possible.

YRMC selected McCarthy as the general contractor for the project due to the firm’s demonstrated ability to deliver on the many critical factors of this project, including developing and meeting complex construction schedules; coordination of multiple crews working concurrently; use of high-tech resources that enhance construction quality and eliminate costly on-site conflicts; good relationships with local subcontractors; and extensive experience with the construction techniques necessary while health care facilities are in operation to best ensure non-disruption of patients. Local subcontractors, which have already been selected for the project, include Kris Kraft for casework and Delta Diversified for electrical work. The project’s finish package bids will be released, for which local subcontractors will be solicited.
