McCarthy was recently honored with the number three spot on the 2009 Top 100 Workplaces by The Dallas Morning News. McCarthy was also selected as the top winner in the category for Best Company Direction. McCarthy was named the emerging leader in this category based on its employees’ confidence in the leadership of the company and the belief that McCarthy operates ethically with strong values during difficult times while continuing to progress in the right direction.

Put on by The Dallas Morning News and its partner, Workplace Dynamics LLC, this is the inaugural year of the Top 100 Workplaces award. Companies eligible for participation included public or private companies, as well as for-profit and nonprofit organizations with more than 50 employees in the DFW metroplex. The award seeks to recognize big and small companies and organizations that excel at creating a dynamic, supportive and inclusive workplace.

Each entry was judged based on an employee opinion survey, rating employers in different categories such as business operations, values, policies and facilities. More than 33,000 employees in the DFW area were surveyed, and based on that 100 companies made the top 100 list. McCarthy, along with Southwest Airlines and The Richards Group took home the top three coveted spots on this lengthy list of the Top 100 Workplaces.

“We are honored that McCarthy’s Texas Division was recognized as one of the top three workplaces in Dallas by The Dallas Morning News. It is exciting to be a part of the inaugural award,” said McCarthy Texas Division President, Mike McWay. “McCarthy is 100 percent employee-owned, so we strive to create the best working environment possible for our family of employees. It is encouraging that our employees recognize our commitment to excellent business operations and company values. I’m also proud that our employees agree with and support the direction McCarthy is taking as a company.”

One McCarthy employee surveyed stated McCarthy should be considered a top workplace, “because the company puts it employees first above all else. Safety, quality and doing a job right.” Another McCarthy employee gave this response in the survey, further reiterating why McCarthy was chosen as the company with the Best Company Direction: “We are continually looking for new and exciting business opportunities to stay positioned to weather any economic storm. We are employee-owned and personally reap the benefits of our performance.”

McCarthy adds this award to a growing list of other business and industry-based awards the firm has received recently in the region, including the 2009 Contractor of the Year award given by the Dallas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

The 2009 Top 100 Workplaces awards were featured in the Nov. 8 issue of the Dallas Morning News. The tour was held in conjunction with the ACE Mentoring Program of America, a unique partnership with building industry professionals and school educators who work together to inform young students about the various career opportunities available within the architectural design, engineering and construction fields.

This is the first year that Patrick Henry High School has been involved with the ACE Mentoring Program, and this event marked the organization’s first job site tour. The group of students was led by McCarthy Project Director Steve Van Dyke in and around the new five-story building, where they learned firsthand about its structural and seismic components and the many roles of a general contractor. The new state-of-the-art Patient Care Pavilion will house a surgical center with 16 operating rooms, 72 private patient rooms, a neo-natal intensive care unit and a cancer center. Slated for completion in 2010, the building is striving for LEED certification.

McCarthy’s Sacramento office was named the best large company employer by the Sacramento Business Journal.

McCarthy ’s Sacramento office was named the best large company employer by the Sacramento Business Journal. Based on an employee survey, McCarthy ranked number one out of all participating companies with 151+ employees in the region.

“Out of all the awards to receive, this one is incredibly rewarding and a tribute to our whole team’s focus and hard work in recent years,” said Rich Henry, President of McCarthy’s Northern Pacific Division. “In Northern California, we pride ourselves as one of the largest and most respected builders and community leaders; however, our employees’ satisfaction and love for the work is why we’re so successful. Our greatest assets at McCarthy walk through the door every day.”

The A+ Employers awards are a result of employee surveys. These survey questions cover categories such as work environment, work-life balance, job satisfaction, advancement opportunities, management, compensation and benefits. Companies needed substantial employee participation to be considered. The employee’s scores were averaged into an overall score, and McCarthy achieved the highest score in the large company category.

“I am extremely proud of our team in Sacramento, as the office is a true testament to the team-oriented, open-door and collaborative culture McCarthy promotes. This win is especially gratifying because we rose to the top slot among seven tough finalists,” McCarthy CEO Mike Bolen added. “Over the years, McCarthy’s offices across the country have been recognized with such awards, which are a tribute to our people – our employee owners.”

The Sacramento Business Journal presented McCarthy with its award at the annual A+ Employers event on Oct. 29, 2008. McCarthy is featured in the publication’s “A+ Employers” supplement.

McCarthy was named by the Orange County Register as one of the Top 20 Work Places for 2008.

McCarthy was named one of the Top 20 Work Places for 2008 by the Orange County Register. The award was announced at an award ceremony in the Hoiles Auditorium at The Orange County Register in Santa Ana on Tuesday, December 9, 2008.

“McCarthy is one of the largest and most respected builders in Orange County and throughout the country. We couldn’t have earned this prominent status without the hard work and talent of the best and most dedicated individuals in the construction industry,” said Carter Chappell, McCarthy President, California Region. “As an employee owned company, McCarthy owner-employees have a strong voice in everything we do from employee benefits and training, to community outreach and workplace safety. It is through these individual efforts that McCarthy has become a great place to work.”

In its inaugural year, the Orange County Register’s Top Places to Work in Orange County selects companies to receive this honor from an extensive employer’s survey as well as employee surveys focusing on leadership, compensation and training, workplace flexibility and diversity. 141 companies and more than 23,325employees participated in the best workplace competition. McCarthy ranked #3 in the mid-size companies category of employers with 150-499 workers in Orange County.

McCarthy’s employee satisfaction is further documented in the firm’s recent Employee Engagement Survey where employees were asked to rate McCarthy on a scale from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest) as a great place to work. With an 82% participation rate, the firm’s average score was a 4.52. McCarthy employees cite jobsite security, employee ownership, open communication with management, workplace safety, community outreach and volunteering, environmental stewardship, benefits and training among the reasons why McCarthy is an exceptional workplace.
