McCarthy Awarded $12 Million Upgrade Of Tums Plant Downtown
McCarthy has been selected by SmithKline Beecham to serve as construction manager and general contractor for a $12 million upgrade of its Tums plant in downtown St. Louis. This facility is the only plant in the world which manufactures Tums.
“Never having dealt with a construction manager in St. Louis before, we evaluated approximately half a dozen firms for this project. We chose McCarthy because they have the experience with production facilities of this size, as well as a thorough knowledge of current GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) guidelines,” said Mark Gagliardi, SmithKline Beecham purchasing category manager for global and strategic purchasing.
The three-year project includes adding new equipment to allow automated bag handling of bulk raw materials. This equipment will also improve the ergonomic and dust control issues related to the manufacturing process. Also included are general upgrades to the plant's architectural finishes, an increase in electrical and chilled water capacity and the installation of a new service elevator. For the new equipment and processes, McCarthy will assist SmithKline Beecham with procurement, commissioning, validation and documentation.
The architect for the project is the St. Louis office of Lockwood Greene, a Spartanburg,
“The biggest challenge,” according to McCarthy Project Director Tom Felton, “will be to keep the five-story facility operating during construction. To minimize downtown, we will phase our work, specifically installation of new equipment.”
McCarthy is the nation's ninth largest general building contractor, according to Engineering News Record's May 1998 issue. The firm offers construction management, general contracting and design/build services for laboratory, biotechnical, educational, mixed-use, healthcare, retail, industrial, multifamily and microelectronics facilities; office buildings and parking structures.
