McCarthy Sacramento is the Best Place to Work

McCarthy’s Sacramento office was recently named the 2011 Best Large Company Employer by the Sacramento Business Journal. Its annual “A+ Employers” event and editorial feature published Nov. 11, 2011 ranked McCarthy as the top company of all participating companies with 151+ employees in the region. The rankings were determined strictly by employee surveys.

“This, in my mind, is the most important award a company can receive. I’m so thrilled that our employees genuinely love to work here,” said Rich Henry, president of McCarthy’s Northern Pacific Division. “It’s our employees’ dedication, coupled with our successful track record as a general contractor of high-performance facilities, that exemplifies why we are respected as a great employer, builder and community leader in Northern California. This is, without a doubt, the best team in the business.”

The A+ Employers survey questions cover categories such as manager and team effectiveness, trust, feeling valued, and compensation and benefits. Companies needed substantial employee participation to be considered. The employees’ scores were averaged into an overall score, giving McCarthy the highest score in the large company category.

This is the McCarthy’s second time winning top honors from the Sacramento Business Journal’s A+ Employer’s Award, winning in 2008 and coming in a very close second in 2009 and 2010.

According to the Sacramento Business Journal’s employee survey findings and also featured in the “A+ Employers” supplement profile, McCarthy’s support of community service reinforces workers’ sense of pride and accomplishment in their work. Among other recent service projects, McCarthy employees restored and landscaped a Ronald McDonald House in the Sacramento area, helping to provide a “home away from home” for families of children being treated at one of the region’s five hospitals. This ethic is also evident in the company’s annual Community Day, where McCarthy employees perform volunteer work at a local charity.

McCarthy also received praise for its commitment to employee wellness. Employees count their medical, vision and dental screenings toward points to reduce their healthcare premium. They can also participate in activities through McCarthy’s Build for Life wellness program to shrink the cost of their premium. Company employees engage in numerous extracurricular activities, such as an adult softball team every summer, relay teams in the California International Marathon, and the Komen Race for the Cure.

“We are a 100 percent employee-owned company, meaning everyone has a personal stake in what we do,” Aaron Alhady, McCarthy vice president and Sacramento area manager, told the Sacramento Business Journal. “It’s amazing to see the commitment employees have for each other. And that means not only executing outstanding projects, but being a part of the community in which we work."
