Building for the Future at Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech’s New Facility: Health Research, Green Design

McCarthy is building a science and lab facility that will be home to human health research and feature LEED Gold-targeted efficiencies.

Home to Research
The 200,000-square-foot Engineered Biosystems Building (EBB) creates an environment for interdisciplinary research focused on improving human health and enhancing relationships between researchers at Georgia Tech and other area universities and community partners.

“The EBB will support Georgia Tech’s continued growth in the areas of bioscience and biotechnology, furthering the Institute’s reputation as a leader in health and life systems research,” said Steve Swant, executive vice president of administration and finance at Georgia Tech.

In addition to a new facility for conducting studies, uniting the research capacity in the Atlanta science community also brings the potential for substantial economic impacts in the area through new grant opportunities as well as the commercialization of any newly developed technologies or research findings.

“McCarthy is proud to be a part of expanding Georgia Tech’s research capabilities through the construction of the EBB,” said Kevin Kuntz, president of McCarthy’s Southeast Division. “This innovative facility will attract new talent and increase a field of study that could provide far-reaching benefits to our community and our region.”

Helping People and the Environment
To build the state-of-the-art facility, McCarthy is using construction technology – BIM, VELA and Bluebeam software – to streamline electronic document management and reduce the carbon footprint of the construction process, as construction plans for EBB target LEED Gold certification.

Initially, energy modeling was used as a baseline to design the building envelope. As a result, the laboratories will feature high efficiency fume hoods to minimize wasted power as well as automatic sash closers and energy-efficient lighting control systems to conserve energy. EBB will also house photovoltaic panels to harness natural heat energy, expanding Georgia Tech’s investment in renewable energy sources. Finally, the building will harvest rainwater and building condensation to be used for gray water and irrigation.
