Combs High School Performing Arts Center Celebrates Construction Milestone

Combs High School

J.O. Combs Unified School District administration and staff, students and members of the project team celebrated a topping out milestone for the new 25,000-square-foot Combs Performing Arts Center and sports field house at Combs High School, located at 2505 E. Germann Road in San Tan Valley, Ariz. The celebration included a ceremonial beam-signing.

Upon completion of these buildings, the original full campus master plan for Combs High School, which opened in 2009, will be fulfilled. The new Performing Arts Center was designed for maximum functionality for students, educators and audience members. To serve all users, the house will be used as a hands-on teaching space for the school’s Stagecraft and Fine Arts programs and will be acoustically balanced for both amplified sound and live performances. The lobby will offer an area to showcase student art pieces. In addition, the entire auditorium is available to community members for personal and business use.

“I am excited for our students and our community to benefit from a fully functioning performing arts building,” said Shelly Hargis, Governing Board President. “The new building will also give our San Tan Valley residents the opportunity to showcase their programs without having to travel to neighboring districts."

“Excellent progress is being made on Combs Performing Arts Center. Our design and project teams have really come together to incorporate special details and features that allow the center to be a unique building and addition to Combs High School. We are on track to open as planned in January 2019,” said Steve Poulin, McCarthy Building Companies Education Services.

DLR Group is the architect for the project, and McCarthy is the general contractor. Construction management services are being provided by Arcadis. The Performing Arts Center is slated to open in January 2019.

Carmen Wyckoff, architect with the design team DLR Group | WRL, added, “The Combs Performing Arts Center will not only support the performing arts, but also be an asset to the community, display student artwork in the lobby, and teach technical theater students on state-of-the-art equipment.  We are so honored to be part of this amazing center.”

“The Performing Arts Center will be the gem to a beautiful campus and provide an intimate setting to showcase the talents of the Combs’ Students,” said Stephen Jones, senior program manager for Arcadis.

The project also includes the addition of a 2,900-square-foot field house, which will accommodate multiple sports activities with equipment storage room as well as space for pre-game and half-time gatherings.
