Completion of West-MEC Northwest Campus Phase I

West-MEC Project Team

McCarthy and Western Maricopa Education Center (West-MEC) celebrated the completion of phase one of the West-MEC Northwest Campus with the project design team of SPS+ Architects and Architechnology as well as dignitaries and members of the community. The $15.8 million initial phase completed construction earlier this summer, and in August began programs in Medical Assisting, Cosmetology, Law, Public Safety & Security, Physical Therapy Technician and IT Security for more than 200 students.

West-MEC’s Northwest Campus Phase I, which is located on the southwest corner of Dysart Road and Grand Avenue in Surprise, Ariz., includes a 42,000-square-foot building, which includes student services offices and classroom space. The campus has three additional phases, which will expand the programs offered thanks to the community’s support during last November’s bond election. A portion of the building bond will add programs including Automotive Technology, Construction, STEM courses, Veterinary Science and Dental Assisting, ultimately serving more than 600 students when future phases are complete.

West-MEC Northwest Campus

“This campus will train the future generations of leaders, health physicians, beauticians, technology, mechanics and law enforcement professionals, said Gregory J. Donovan, West-MEC superintendent. “We would not have been able to make this new campus happen had it not been for the community’s support and for the commitment of our business partners who worked diligently on this project, and ensured that our operations were ready for students to begin this fall.”

“Bringing West-MEC projects to the community is rewarding, not only because we have the opportunity to work alongside the facilities team to build state of the art technical learning environments, but we help to provide young people with a place that allows them to receive the specialized training they need to pursue careers in a wide range of technical professions,” said Tyler Shupe, project director for McCarthy Building Companies Education Services Group. “This new campus will offer students and adults seeking career training in the Northwest Valley a wealth of opportunities.”

“I am so excited to see the vision for a flagship career and technical education center come to life in Surprise, said City of Surprise Mayor Sharon Wolcott. “West-MEC is not only helping to revive Grand Avenue, but they are a huge economic development driver for our city.”
