ENR Recognizes 11 McCarthy Projects as Regional Best Projects of 2019

The Engineering News-Record (ENR) Regional Best Project Awards are dedicated to honoring the best construction projects and the companies that designed and built them. This year, 11 of McCarthy Building Companies Inc.’s recently completed projects were declared among the regional ENR’s Best Projects of 2019.

Every year, the ENR regions gather judges with industry experience to determine Best Project winners in their region. These regional winners are then entered for national Project of the Year recognition, which will be announced later this year.  

McCarthy’s award-winning projects, ENR’s region and their industry categories include:

ENR Midwest

Cultural/Worship Best Project

Museum at the Gateway Arch – St. Louis

The expansion and renovation of the St. Louis Gateway Arch Visitor Center and Museum, and the renovation of both the North and South grounds of the surrounding memorial park.

Specialty Construction Best Project & Safety Award of Merit

Bagnell Dam Stabilization – Lakeside, Mo.

The first major structural update to the historic Bagnell Dam in more than 30 years vastly improved the dam’s safety and overall stability.

ENR Texas & Louisiana

Specialty Construction Best Project

Glassell School of Art – Houston

Construction of the new three-story, 80,000-square-foot Glassell School of Art and 290-car, two-level below grade parking structure.

K-12 Education Award of Merit

Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts – Houston

New five-story, 200,000-square-foot high school to house 750 students specializing in the arts including acting, writing, music, fine arts, and dance.

ENR California

Higher Education/Research Best Project

CSU Sacramento, University Union Expansion – Sacramento, Calif.

McCarthy added 88,000-square-feet of new space to the existing Student Union. The Student Union remained open through construction, seeing in excess of 25,000 visits each day.

Higher Education/Research Award of Merit

University of California, San Diego Biological & Physical Sciences Building – San Diego, Calif.

A new 126,000-square-foot, seven-story building to support research and teaching in the biological and physical sciences.

Higher Education/Research Award of Merit

University of California, San Diego Center for Novel Therapeutics – San Diego, Calif.

Located in the heart of UCSD’s Science Research Park, the 137,500-square-foot, three-story research hub was designed to foster collaboration and accelerate therapies from research to the patient’s bedside.

ENR Southwest

Energy/Industrial Best Project

ASU Combined Heat & Power Facility Upgrade – Tempe, Ariz.

The expansion of the Sun Devil Energy Center included the addition of a 70MGT turbine, a 3,750 GPM capacity cooling tower, boilers, natural gas distribution, bulk ammonia tank, and other supporting ancillary systems.

Renovation/Restoration Best Project

Palms Casino, Resort – Las Vegas

The total renovation included the 78,000-square-foot casino renovation, expansion of dining and entertainment options, exterior refresh, and creation of the new 29,000-square-foot nightclub and 73,000-square-foot dayclub.

Cultural/Worship Award of Merit

J.O. Combs Performing Arts Center – Sun Tan Valley, Ariz.

The new 25,000-square-foot performing arts center includes a 500-seat auditorium to be used as a hands-on teaching space for the school’s Stagecraft and Fine Arts programs as well as for the broader San Tan community.
