Erlanger selects HKS/McCarthy for Children’s and Women’s Project

Erlanger is extremely excited about selecting HKS and McCarthy as our partners in planning and building the new Children’s and Women’s Hospital for Chattanooga and the region,” said Kevin M. Spiegel, FACHE, president & CEO, Erlanger Health System.

After a national search, including interviews with 25 firms, Erlanger selected two teams for consideration to plan, design and build the first phase of major campus revitalization at the downtown campus on 3rd street. Both teams spent time in Chattanooga. This was followed by a team from Erlanger spending two days in each of their respective Atlanta offices. The entire process consummated in a very unique opportunity for each team to share their early vision of the Re-Imagined Erlanger campus with the City of Chattanooga at the IMAX theatre on Oct. 7.

The Erlanger selection team utilized this month long process, as well as the feedback from the Chattanooga community, to reach a decision in selecting the team of HKS (architects) and McCarthy (construction manager) as their partners for this transformational process.

HKS has an international reputation for designing outstanding hospitals, having planned over 184 million square feet of healthcare facilities, including 30 million square feet of children’s hospitals. They have been in business for 75 years, with the last 35 years dedicated to children’s healthcare.

McCarthy, an employee-owned company, is celebrating 150 years in business and is Modern Healthcare magazine’s #1 healthcare contractor, with $3.3 billion in annual billings, including $2.5 billion in children’s and women’s facilities and over 800 completed hospitals.

“While statics are important, the driving factor in the decision was the chemistry that the Erlanger team developed with HKS/McCarthy’s key individuals selected for the Children’s and Women’s project,” said Bruce Komiske, the Erlanger project executive. “They displayed a very unique passion for Chattanooga and Erlanger that clearly indicated that this project was not just another commission.”

HKS/McCarthy will be working out of their Atlanta office; however, they committed to establishing a design studio on the Erlanger campus. The team also recognizes the critical need to keep as much of the work and dollars spent on the project in Chattanooga and are committed, along with Erlanger, to develop a plan that will assure the community that this will be a priority.
