McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. broke ground on an expansion of Mercy Hospital Jefferson’s Crystal City campus. The $135 million project will add a three-story patient tower, a new front entrance and a variety of other enhancements to improve the experience for patients, staff and visitors.

McCarthy is serving as construction manager for the expansion, which will relocate services and provide improved way-finding measures, making the hospital easier to navigate. Springfield, Mo.-based Bates & Associates Architects is designing the project with Heideman Associates, Inc. of St. Louis providing engineering services.

The new tower will tie into the south side of the existing facility and feature 90 private patient rooms. New corridors will connect the tower to the emergency department, imaging, surgical services and admitting areas. The scope of work also includes relocation of the helicopter landing pad and ambulance entrance and renovations to existing patient rooms. Construction is scheduled to be complete by late 2017.

“A significant construction project like this one on an active medical campus requires constant communication with hospital staff, patients and the community,” explained John Farnen, executive director of strategic projects for Mercy. “Mercy has worked with McCarthy for more than 30 years and we are confident that they will do what it takes to minimize disruption throughout construction.”

The expansion of the Crystal City hospital will provide an economic boost to the region, resulting in both added jobs and more money spent locally. As one of the largest employers in Jefferson County, Mercy has placed an emphasis on including local businesses.

“We are excited to be part of such an important project and are focusing on utilizing local firms to participate on the project to help support local businesses,” stated McCarthy Project Director Tate Jacobitz. “Strategies, such as teaming smaller local subcontractors with national firms, will enable a number of local contractors to be involved.”
