McCarthy Again Recognized as an American Heart Association Platinum Fit-Friendly Worksite

National builder sets an example as a healthy environment for the third year in a row

McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. has been recognized as a Platinum-Level Fit-Friendly Worksite by the American Heart Association for helping employees incorporate wellness into their lives at work and at home.

We’re honored to be recognized for the third year in a row by the American Heart Association as a Platinum-Level Fit-Friendly Worksite.”

To be designated as a Platinum-level Fit-Friendly Worksite, employers must:

  • Offer employees physical activity options in the workplace
  • Increase healthy eating options at the worksite
  • Promote a wellness culture in the workplace
  • Implement at least nine criteria outlined by the American Heart Association in the areas of physical activity, nutrition and culture
  • Demonstrate measurable outcomes related to workplace wellness

Health and safety have always been core tenets of McCarthy’s approach. In 2010, McCarthy extended this effort with the launch of McCarthy Build for Life to assist employees and their families in striving toward optimal mental, physical, emotional and financial well-being. In 2012, McCarthy further expanded the program when the firm partnered with wellness company Vitality to provide an interactive and personalized wellness approach, encouraging employees to live healthy lives by maintaining, preventing or improving their current level of wellness.

American employers are losing an estimated $225.8 billion a year because of healthcare expenses and health-related losses in productivity, and those numbers are rising. Many American adults spend most of their waking hours at sedentary jobs. Their lack of regular physical activity raises their risk for a host of medical problems, such as obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes. Employers face $12.7 billion in annual medical expenses due to obesity alone. The American Heart Association is working to change corporate cultures by motivating employees to start walking, which has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity.

“Companies like McCarthy should be applauded for the commitment they have made in the health of their employees,” said Jennifer Jaeger, executive director for the Greater St. Louis Division of the American Heart Association. “Our Fit Friendly Worksite program is intended to be a positive change in workplaces across America. We are happy to see worksites making the health and wellness of their employees a priority.”
