As one of America’s largest employee-owned companies, McCarthy is joining with other businesses across America during October to celebrate National Employee Ownership Month. McCarthy is 100 percent employee owned and ranks among The Employee Ownership 100, America's largest majority employee-owned companies as compiled by the National Center for Employee Ownership.

“Employee ownership is the foundation of our culture,” said Ray Sedey, McCarthy chief executive officer. “It drives us to improve every aspect of how we operate — for our clients, for each other and for the communities we serve. It’s an incredibly powerful mindset and plays a crucial role in our ability to address and overcome challenges like COVID-19.”

In order to safely build throughout the coronavirus pandemic, McCarthy implemented a variety of protective measures to ensure the health and safety of its employees, trade and industry partners and clients. In addition to complying with all CDC and government regulations, the firm expanded upon them to further enhance and protect the health and safety of its employees.

Kevin Maitland, vice president safety, explained, “As owners, we genuinely care about our partners and hold ourselves accountable for the safety of everyone who steps onto our jobsites. When the pandemic began, our employee-owners from across the country stepped up and developed innovative ways to maintain health and safety on our jobsites. Many of these safety processes will remain permanent improvements, even after the pandemic abates, allowing us to continue delivering the essential facilities our communities need.”

A few notable McCarthy accomplishments enabled by employee ownership include:

  • Developing and implementing the best-in-class McCarthy Build U® training and development program, earning recognition from Training Magazine as the first and only construction company to date inducted into the publication’s Hall of Fame in 2016.
  • Committing to fair and equitable pay for all employees and cultivating a rich, diverse and inclusive culture. The McCarthy Partnership for Women is an employee-driven group supporting the recruitment, development and retention of the best women in the construction industry.
  • Expanding an industry-leading craft workforce and helping build the construction industry’s workforce of the future through early outreach, award-winning training, peer networks and development programs.
  • Enhancing the award-winning McCarthy Build for Life wellness program, increasing the health and well-being of McCarthy’s employee-owners and families. In 2019, McCarthy was recognized as one of the Healthiest 100 Workplaces in America by Healthiest Employers.
  • Giving back through the McCarthy Heart Hats charitable giving program, donating more than $2 million annually to make a difference for local communities where we live and work.

“Employee ownership is one of the single biggest reasons we’ve been able to address and overcome this year’s unique challenges.” Sedey said. “Regardless of any distance between us and adversity thrown our way, ownership connects us and ensures we are all pulling in the same direction, ready to build the projects our clients and communities need.”
