McCarthy Completes Design & Construction of Arizona Public Service’s Largest Solar Project
McCarthy recently completed the installation of the large-scale Red Rock Solar Plant for Arizona Public Service (APS), which developed, owns and operates the plant.
Located on 400 acres at 25990 E. Camino Adelante Road in Red Rock, Ariz., about 30 miles south of Casa Grande, this project represents APS’s largest solar plant to date with 2,286 single-axis trackers supporting 182,880 photovoltaic panels generating 40 megawatts (MWac) of solar energy.
“Red Rock is the sixth solar project we have worked on for APS, which has rapidly expanded its solar portfolio and solar leadership in the state,” said Scott Canada, senior vice president of the Renewable Energy team at McCarthy. “Our system engineering and construction expertise has helped APS harness the power of the sun and turn it into cost-effective clean, renewable energy.”
The main subcontractors on the project included Trina Solar, NEXTracker, Power Electronics USA, Inc., Blount Contracting, Inc., CG Power Systems USA, Inc., Hatfield Construction LLC., Wilson Electric, American Fence Company of Arizona, Inc., Locus Energy, Terracon Consultants Inc., Wind Turbine & Energy Cables Corp. McCarthy also contracted TaylorRyMar Corporation for electrical design and Dibble Engineering for civil design. Construction of the project began in March 2016 and completed in December 2016, with the official dedication held on Jan. 11, 2017.
To date, McCarthy’s Renewable Energy team has completed several large-scale solar installations across the U.S. representing a combined capacity of more than 800 MWac of energy production. McCarthy was named to the 2016 Solar Power World’s Top 500 solar contractors list, ranking #29.
In addition to Red Rock, McCarthy also completed the 10-MW Desert Star Solar Plant, 10-MW Luke Air Force Base Solar Plant, 14-MW Hyder II Solar Plant, 18-MW Cotton Center Solar Station and the 21.7-MW Chino Valley Solar Plant for APS.
