According to ENR, approximately 700 industry project teams submitted their work to the regional Best Projects competitions. A national judging panel comprised of industry leaders was tasked with determining the best from the best in terms of teamwork, safety, overcoming challenges, innovation and quality.

“I am very proud of our region for earning three of the most significant national construction awards this year,” said Justin Kelton, president of McCarthy’s Southwest region. “The teams’ truly demonstrated exceptional capabilities in safety, innovation and building highly-complex projects on-time in each case and should feel extremely honored to receive accolades from the entire construction industry for their achievements.”

OdySea Aquarium, Best of the Best Sports/Entertainment Project: The 200,000 square-foot OdySea Aquarium, located at the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community in Scottsdale, Ariz., represents the largest aquarium in the Southwest and provides guests with a high-tech, high-entertainment, oceanic educational journey like no other in the industry. OdySea not only features more than 50 exhibits and 500 different species of marine life but also envelops its attractions within a unique circular structure featuring specially designed steel and concrete support elements. The 14-acre attraction, which opened in September 2016, accommodates up to 15,000 visitors daily. OdySea was developed by founders Amram Knishinsky, Ph.D. and Martin Pollack.

Yuma Regional Medical Center Emergency Department Expansion, Best of the Best Excellence in Safety Award: For the Excellence in Safety award, a separate panel of industry safety managers and experts reviewed the incident rates, worker hours and safety programs to determine the winner. The $115 million, 35-acre Yuma Regional Medical Center Emergency Department (ED) expansion and campus renovation boasted no lost-time incidents and an OSHA Recordable Incident Rate of 0.19 with 1,025,623 worker hours on the job over the course of the three-year project.

The project included a new 71,118-square-foot ED expansion, which increased bed capacity from 37 to 72 and now accommodates up to 109,000 visits annually. The new ED building also includes a below-grade shell-floor for a future dietary kitchen department, and provides the hospital with two additional shell-floors above totaling 100,000 square feet to accommodate future medical, surgical and/or Intensive Care Unit beds. Additionally, the ED expansion also added a new lower parking level and two new stilted heliports.
