McCarthy Joins in the Fight Against Hunger

McCarthy Team at the Arizona Construction Awards

The team of McCarthy, architect DLR Group and engineer Kimley-Horn took home the Structural Ingenuity award at the 2016 Canstruction competition in Phoenix. Canstruction® is an international community service event, where teams compete to build structures entirely out of canned food.

The design featured an alien spaceship with the theme “abducting hunger” because hunger has no place on Earth. The project was made up of 3,574 cans of food, which has been donated to St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance in Phoenix. The team’s project will be submitted to the international Canstruction competition, which will be judged in April 2017 at the American Institutes of Architects (AIA) annual convention.

“Our team at McCarthy always enjoys participating in Phoenix Canstruction to donate to a worthy organization as well as show off our design and building skills,” said McCarthy Assistant Project Manager Lynsey Jones. “We had fun with our theme, collecting protein via canned tuna to help our intergalactic teammates abduct hunger.”

This year marks the 10th Anniversary of Phoenix Canstruction® held at the Phoenix Convention Center West Building to benefit St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance and help fight hunger across Arizona. In total, more than 50,000 cans of food were collected at this year’s event held in August.

Each year Phoenix Canstruction, in conjunction with the Arizona Chapter of the Society for Marketing Professional Services, invites local Phoenix architects, engineers, contractors, design firms and schools of design to participate in this unique effort.

Since its inception in Arizona, Phoenix Canstruction® has provided close to 400,000 pounds of canned food for those in need across Arizona through St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance, the world’s first food bank.
