McCarthy Moves Northern Pacific Region Headquarters to San Francisco’s Historic 1265 Battery Street

“It’s only fitting that we move into one of San Francisco’s most historic business districts after the momentous year we’ve had as a company,” said Rich Henry, McCarthy’s Northern Pacific Region president. “Established in 1864, McCarthy proudly celebrated its 150th anniversary of building in America, and we are extremely proud to have been a part of building many of the region’s marquee public and private projects. We are thriving in this booming market – our new office is a reflection of where we are headed as a company, and creates an exciting new space for the hard-working and talented employee owners here at McCarthy.”

The new office occupies the entire third floor of the historic 1903 Italian Swiss Colony Building, one of the finest examples of industrial warehouse architecture that remains in the North Waterfront. The building was originally used as a warehouse and wine vault by the Swiss Colony Winery. Studio O+A’s design features many of the building’s original materials, while exposed brick and beams throughout the office provide texture and remind visitors of the building’s early 20th century history and industrial beginnings.

“At McCarthy, we have the privilege of constantly learning from our clients, which include some of the most innovative and technologically advanced companies on the planet,” added Henry.“These companies have shown that collaboration and knowledge sharing are essential ingredients for success in the 21st century marketplace. Our new office takes this approach to the next level by breaking down walls and using every available space to promote opportunities for team members to work together. It completely defies the traditional construction industry corporate office environment.”

The new office includes an open configuration designed to maximize group interaction and collaboration within and across teams. Team members sit at open workstations that discourage silo-building and ensure open communication and accessibility. When privacy is needed, the office contains “huddle rooms” for individual and small group work. The space features numerous areas to facilitate social interaction, including a social hub/coffee bar and a large room for social events. Studio O+A took cues from McCarthy’s 100 percent employee-owned model and included all business units in the design process, ensuring that all needs were incorporated into the final product.

“Our goal was to create a space that reflects McCarthy’s company culture, encouraging a team approach and social interaction, while continuing to honor a rich history of builders and craftsman,” said Liz Guerrero, Studio O+A’s design studio manager. “The result was a work environment that emphasizes movement and embraces the notion that these conversations lead to new and exciting ideas.”

As one of the leading builders in California and nationwide, McCarthy is deeply immersed in the Bay Area’s construction market. The company has delivered more than $3.6 billion worth of construction in the Bay Area. Currently, McCarthy is constructing the new Bay Area Headquarters Authority (BAHA) facility in downtown San Francisco; working with a market-leading client in Silicon Valley on its high-profile campus project worth $150 million; constructing several buildings and site improvements at the University of California, Berkeley’s Lower Sproul Plaza; and building Stanford Medicine’s new Stanford Hospital.

Barry Bram of TRI Commercial represented McCarthy in the leasing transaction.
