In June, McCarthy employee-partners and leaders from across the country joined together for the McCarthy Partnership for Women 2019 Conference. Attendees gathered to learn more about the company’s diversity and inclusion strategy, strengthen networks among female partners company-wide, and support personal and professional development. McCarthy Partnership for Women supports the recruitment, development and retention of women at McCarthy to broaden diversity of perspective.

During the two-day conference, participants heard from industry and business experts, enjoyed external and internal panel discussions, joined in lively breakout discussions, and had ample time to meet and network with partners and company leaders. Highlights from the conference included:

  • Keynote speaker Lori Goltermann, CEO of AON’s U.S. Commercial Risk Solutions, Health Solutions, kicked off the conference. Walking the audience through her career journey, Lori encouraged the audience to “have a perspective and a voice” and to “pay it forward…always.”
  • Executive VP Human Resources Al Berardi, and Senior VP Finance Kris Newman presented the business case for our focus on female talent, discussed McCarthy Partnership for Women milestones achieved to date, and set out next steps for our path forward.
  • Matt Hunt, VP Organizational Effectiveness, defined the confidence loop for attendees, explaining, “As you take risks, your confidence will grow.”
  • Renowned diversity expert Jeffery Tobias Halter explained the direct correlation between diversity and company financial performance, offering guidance on how to leverage gender differences.
  • Internal and external panels offered opportunities to hear from others representing a variety of positions, backgrounds and experiences.
  • Attendees took part in a construction tour of the St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station.
  • Interactive expo featured PPE available in smaller sizes, prescription safety glasses and regional Partnership for Women committee booths. Attendees also helped raise funds for Dress for Success, a not-for-profit organization that empowers women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and the development tools to help them thrive in work and in life.

Just a few comments about the conference from participants included:

“Great event, so powerful and encouraging.”

“As a young female in the construction industry...I really think our program is best in class.”

“Networking with other partners was great.”

“It really took me back to see all the executive team make this meeting a priority. That said a lot about the importance of this within the company.”

McCarthy President and Chief Operating Officer Scott Wittkop summed up the conference by saying, “I firmly believe we make better decisions when you have people with diverse perspectives offering their thoughts in an environment where they feel comfortable to put their opinion out there. Couple that with the fact that we are employee owned and how far can we go? This place is really, really special.”
