McCarthy Receives AGC Building Excellence Award for Mercy Hospital Joplin

McCarthy Team Receiving AGC Excellence Award for Mercy Hospital Joplin

McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. is honored that Mercy Hospital Joplin has been recognized by the Kansas City Chapter of AGC as Project of the Year by a General Contractor Over $50 Million. McCarthy served as construction manager to rebuild the $347 million, 890,000-square-foot Mercy Hospital Joplin that replaced St. John’s Mercy Regional Medical Center when it was demolished by the May 22, 2011 EF-5 tornado that ravaged Joplin, Mo. In addition to setting the standard in tornado readiness at the hospital level, the project was completed under budget and in less than half the time it would normally take to plan, design and construct a comparable facility — an unprecedented 46 months.

“While McCarthy is grateful to have been part of the rebuilding process, we will always remember those that were lost in the devastation,” said McCarthy Project Director Ryan Felton, who led the Mercy Joplin rebuild efforts. “It’s fitting to receive this prestigious award from AGC, just days after the five-year anniversary of the tragic Joplin tornado.”

When Mercy made a promise to rebuild the hospital by early 2015, McCarthy and its team delivered. Doors opened in March 2015, providing a safe, state-of-the-art healthcare facility for Joplin and the surrounding communities. The new Mercy Joplin includes a nine-story hospital patient tower and five-story clinic tower. It houses units including medical surgical, critical care, women’s/children’s (labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum rooms), neonatal intensive care, behavioral health and rehab.

In addition to McCarthy, the project team included architectural firms HKS, Inc. and Archimages, MEP engineer Heideman & Associates, civil engineer Olsson & Associates and landscape architect SWT Design.

Honorees were selected by a distinguished panel of six judges and recognized at the Kansas City Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) biennial Building Excellence Awards Banquet on May 24, 2016.
