Multiple executives based in the Dallas office of McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., were awarded the Employers in Support of the Guard and Reserve’s (ESGR) Patriot Award. Raymond Sedey, current McCarthy Southern Region president and newly named McCarthy Holdings Inc.’s CEO; Joe Jouvenal, senior vice president, Dallas business unit and Wendy Hatchell, Southern Region director of human resources, were nominated for their efforts in support of Anna Griffin, a McCarthy project manager and business development manager, who is a Captain in the 136th Airlift Wing’s Texas Air National Guard. The individuals were recognized for their support of Griffin through a wide range of measures including relocating Anna from El Paso to Houston so she could aptly prepare for deployment, offering flexible schedule, granting time off prior to and after deployment, caring for her family and more.

“The value of my military service is something that is echoed through Ray, Joe and Wendy’s every action. They have always ensured I have the flexibility necessary to continue my service,” said Griffin. “Further, the team ensured I was happy and healthy during my transition back to civilian life. They take the skills I have acquired throughout my 16 years in the military into consideration for formulating goals and opportunity for my advancement, training, mentorships and company-wide events. I wouldn't have thrived without their support.”

In 2018, Griffin volunteered to deploy to Kuwait with the Air National Guard as the Detachment Commander where she led a squadron of 150 Airmen in charge of maintaining eight C-130H Hercules aircraft. Over a four-month deployment, she utilized her logistics prowess to recover $26 million in aircraft assets that sustained major damage in austere countries. Griffin returned to the U.S. in December 2018 and after considering multiple internal job offers, accepted a role with McCarthy’s Atlanta Division. Griffin took a lead role on a $25 million health sciences building for Chattahoochee Technical College in Chattanooga, Tenn. Along with a successful transition, Griffin was able to motivate the team to finish ahead of schedule and offer $1.2 million in additional upgrades for the client. Recently, she was promoted to business development manager for the firm’s Atlanta business unit.

“It is an honor for us to receive such a significant award that recognizes McCarthy’s commitment to our men and women in the military,” said Sedey. “Anna is the epitome of what our industry needs in female leaders, and we are honored to have been able to provide her the assistance necessary to complete her deployment and provide her with the tools necessary for a comfortable transition back to work.”

ESGR, a Department of Defense program, was established in 1972 to promote cooperation and understanding between Reserve Component service members and their civilian employers and to assist in the resolution of conflicts arising from an employee's military commitment. Volunteers, hailing from small business and industry, government, education and prior military service bring a vast wealth of experience to assist in serving employers, service members and their families. Together with Headquarters ESGR staff and a small cadre of support staff for each state committee, volunteers work to promote and enhance employer support for military service in the Guard and Reserve.
