McCarthy Selected Among Healthiest 100 Workplaces in America
McCarthy was recently ranked among the 2014 Healthiest 100 Workplaces in America by Healthiest Employers, the leader in employee health analytics, best practices and benchmark data. McCarthy, one of the oldest American-owned construction companies with offices nationally, was ranked 36th on the Healthiest 100 list.
“For 150 years, our approach to construction has always been to invest significant energy up front to prevent issues before they occur so we can deliver superior results,” noted McCarthy President/COO Derek Glanvill. “We have extended this same proactive approach to our McCarthy Build for Life health and wellness program, encouraging employees to make wellness a part of their everyday lives. By focusing on wellness together, we are becoming more productive business partners, family and community members, and in turn better controlling rising healthcare costs through prevention.”
The Healthiest 100 Workplaces in America awards program honors the “best of the best” employers who have successfully implemented practical and effective corporate wellness strategies for creating a sustainably healthy workplace. Representing employers of all sizes, regions and industries, the Healthiest 100 recognizes those who are comprehensively incorporating the most vital corporate wellness practices, demonstrating strategic thought leadership and vision regarding their organization’s role within the broader healthcare environment, and achieving deep and detailed insight into their own organizations and workforces.
Rod Reasen II, president of Healthiest Employers, notes, “This highly selective award recognizes employers who demonstrate exceptional leadership in using wellness as a strategy to drive workplace productivity, employee health and community wellbeing. As these employers demonstrate, every organization has a path to the Healthiest 100, regardless of size, industry or geography.”
At McCarthy, safety has always been a core tenet of the company’s mission. In 2010, McCarthy extended this effort to include the overall health and wellness of employees with the launch of McCarthy Build for Life. This comprehensive wellness program is designed to encourage all McCarthy employees and their families to strive toward optimal mental, physical, emotional and financial well-being. The program focuses on four key areas: Awareness, Prevention, Activity, and Lifestyle & Stress. Key program features include:
- Expanded Wellness Incentives including premium reductions, points redemption program and reimbursements
- A Powerful Wellness Partnership with Vitality, providing an interactive and personalized wellness program, encouraging employees to live healthy lives by maintaining their current level of wellness, preventing future health conditions or improving critical areas of concern
- McCarthy provides regular wellness education at peer group meetings and through webinars available to all employees and families
- Complimentary biometrics screenings for employees and families with a full panel review of 33 factors including BP, Cholesterol, Glucose and BMI
- Prominent wellness areas in all office locations and at employee meetings

“Wellness has become an integral part of our McCarthy culture,” continued Glanvill. “It’s exciting to see our employee-owners taking real steps to improve the quality of their lives. We are proud of the improvements we’ve seen as an organization since we launched our program and are honored to be included among the healthiest workplaces in nation for these ongoing efforts”
