McCarthy Tops Out New Science Building at Clayton State University

McCarthy celebrates topping out new science building at Clayton State University

McCarthy has marked a key milestone in its construction of Clayton State University’s new Science Building with a topping out ceremony. Representatives from the University, McCarthy, SLAM, GSFIC, BOR and others gathered at the construction site to sign the final beam before it was hoisted to the top of the new, state-of-the-art facility.

Once complete, the Science Building will be home to classrooms, teaching and research labs, office and support space. The facility will be 64,000 square feet, spread over three stories, housing labs, mechanical penthouse, mechanical basement and loading dock. The building will be Georgia Peach Green Building certified. The Peach program recognizes buildings owned or managed by the state of Georgia that optimize energy performance, increase the demand for materials and furnishings produced in Georgia, improve the environmental quality, conserve energy, protect Georgia’s natural resources and reduce the burden on the state’s water supply.

“Engaging undergraduate students in research is an essential part of their preparation for careers in the natural sciences and health sciences,” said Dr. Tim Hynes, president of Clayton State University. “The innovative laboratory teaching spaces in this building will expand our support of undergraduate research projects where faculty and students work side-by-side in the learning and exploration process. Providing these opportunities not only benefit those in our science majors, they also impact allied health students and every student on campus who takes a lab science course for their core requirements.”

“This project provided McCarthy with the opportunity to truly collaborate with the University, architect and subcontractors to make this building happen,” said Kevin Kuntz, McCarthy Southeast Division president. “After working through the schematic design and estimate process, and gaining approval from the Board of Regents, state cuts reduced the available budget from $26.7 million to $17.5 million. Our team worked closely with the University to understand which aspects of design were critical and what could be downsized or altered. This collaborative process resulted in a facility that meets the University’s needs, while working within significantly revised budget constraints…a win for all involved. We’re thrilled for the University and proud to partner with them to help grow their campus.”

Clayton State University is a unit of the University System of Georgia, located in Morrow, approximately 15 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta.
