McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. recently celebrated a ceremonial topping out of the new Mount Vernon Township High School in Mount Vernon, Ill. on Tuesday, October 20. This marks a significant milestone in the construction of the $61 million, 300,000-square-foot full service replacement high school. Community members had the opportunity to sign the final beam, which was secured in place during the ceremony. In attendance with the construction team were student council and school board members, representatives with design firm FGM Architects and several community groups.

“This milestone offers a logical time to evaluate progress of the project,” explained McCarthy Project Director Chris Nisbet. “We are pleased to report that we are on schedule to meet the May 24, 2016 substantial completion date, and we are very excited to celebrate this with Mount Vernon School District and the Mount Vernon community.”

Designed to accommodate more than 1,800 students on an 82-acre campus, the new school will replace the existing Mount Vernon Township High School campus that includes 11 buildings, the oldest built in 1905. The new campus will include a new 2 story classroom building housing classrooms and administrative offices and a 2-story building housing a large gymnasium, secondary gymnasium, auditorium and vocational technical school. McCarthy is also completing significant sitework including a football and track stadium with associated bleachers, baseball field, softball field and practice fields, along with surface parking, hardscape, landscape, stormwater drainage and other associated site, road and utility improvements.

McCarthy is utilizing sophisticated technology tools to improve efficiencies both during construction and after turnover to the school district upon completion. “For example, the team is utilizing photo documentation of all in-wall rough-ins that they will turn over to the school district at the end of the project,” commented Brian Baldwin, McCarthy project manager. “This will provide them with a 360 degree view of every room, prior to drywall, to help their facilities staff better service their building in the future.”
