New Denton Army Reserve Center Provides Training Facility for Area Reservists
A north Texas Mentor/Protégé joint venture (JV) formed by mentor, McCarthy, a Texas builder for 34 years, and protégé, GCC Enterprises, Inc., recently completed construction of the Army Reserve Center (ARC) in Denton, Texas. The Denton ARC will be used to train and develop military skills for local reservists who serve global military missions. The $12 million military project broke ground in April 2012 and construction was administered by United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Fort Worth District.
The grounds, located at 3250 Jim Christal Road, showcase a 37,000-square-foot administrative and training center, an operational maintenance shop, storage buildings and support facilities. The support facilities include two covered wash platforms, a high/low loading ramp, paving, fencing, general site improvements and site utilities.
“This venture was a privilege to be a part of,” shares McCarthy’s Texas Region President Mike McWay. “GCC and McCarthy consider it our duty to provide the United States Army with a facility in which everyone involved can be exceedingly proud of and that is worthy of showing off to the surrounding community. We are honored to be able to present the men and women who selflessly serve our country with the premium Army Reserve Center we have constructed in Denton.”
The project is progressive in nature due to the open entry/foyer, its anticipation for LEED Silver certification and commitment to electronic communication through the use of QCS, a project management/project controls software platform built specifically for USACE. Additionally, computer-aided design (CAD) as-built drawings were used during construction.
The completion of the Denton ARC marks the first major achievement for the mentor-protégé JV team. A product of the U.S. Small Business Administration’s 8(a) Business Development Program, the two firms have worked together on projects in Dallas, at Fort Hood, Texas and the Red River Army Depot in Texarkana, Texas throughout the course of the companies’ three-year relationship.
The Denton ARC facility is just one of several federal projects, McCarthy is currently building in Texas. The firm was also awarded one of the largest projects funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the $536 million As part of another JV, the Balfour Beatty | McCarthy team is in the process of finishing the 947,000-square-foot facility, which will house state-of-the-art healthcare facilities for service members and their families at Fort Hood, near Killeen, Texas. The project recently held a topping out ceremony and is on track to complete in July 2014, with operations set to start in summer 2015. In addition, Clark McCarthy Healthcare Partners II, was awarded the $648 million contract by USACE, Fort Worth District to build the Fort Bliss Replacement Hospital in El Paso. Notice to proceed was issued in late May and the project is expected to be complete in 2016.
