New El Camino Fundamental High School Performing Arts Center Begins

Groundbreaking at El Camino Fundamental High School Performing Arts Center

McCarthy, in collaboration with HGA Architects & Engineers (HGA), an integrated architecture, engineering and planning firm, and the San Juan Unified School District (San Juan Unified), is pleased to announce that construction has commenced on El Camino Fundamental High School’s new performing arts center.

“The new center will provide students with a unique and valuable arts education experience that will enhance their appreciation, as well as offer a quality, affordable alternative to community groups in need of a place to stage events,” said San Juan Unified’s Director of Facilities Construction and Modernization Brett Mitchell. “We’re thrilled with the positive response this project has received and look forward to providing a modern, state-of-the-art facility that will serve the region for years to come.”

The performing arts center is one of nine projects in the district supported by the four-phase Measure N Signature Project program, a $350 million bond measure passed by voters in 2012. The new, roughly 11,600 square-foot facility will provide much-needed space for the school’s award-winning music and drama programs. The theater will feature a raised stage, a control room, dressing rooms, 500 fixed seats and 100 portable seats in the orchestra area, a ticket booth, and a lobby area equipped to showcase student artwork. It will be used for a variety of school and community lecture and performance functions.

The project is the first in the district to utilize a Progressive Design-Build delivery method, a collaborative process in which one entity – the design-build team, comprised of builder and designer - works under a single contract with the project owner to provide design and construction services. This growing trend allows for each partner to bring forth their unique qualifications and capabilities as a basis for selection and transforms the relationship between designers and builders into an alliance, fostering collaboration and teamwork, with high-level results.

“Collaborative design-build is a very attractive option that is newer to the market and has many owners, contractors and especially designers very excited to see the propagation of its use in the market. The concept aligns ideally with our desire to deliver an exceptional experience for our clients,” shared McCarthy’s Project Director Ian McQuoid. “The new performing arts center has been a model example of what can be achieved through a concerted, collaborative process. McCarthy has been actively shaping the local region for years, and we’re gratified to partner with HGA and San Juan Unified to construct this new, enhanced facility, which will serve as the hub of arts activity for the students and the larger community.”

To commemorate the milestone, San Juan Unified hosted a ceremonial groundbreaking, which included performances by the school’s band and choir, speeches from school faculty and district representatives, and opportunities for attendees to take a groundbreaking photo with a hard hat and shovel. Construction is expected to complete in August 2018.
