Ramping Up to Help
A McCarthy Act of Kindness
When McCarthy heard a young woman’s call for assistance, volunteers quickly mobilized to help.
McCarthy’s Southeast Division, along with our subcontractor partners, recently gathered resources to assist April McConnell, a young woman newly confined to a wheelchair in need of help. April was paralyzed after being shot multiple times and needed a ramp to access the main floor of her home. With less than a week’s notice, the McCarthy team mobilized and was able to surprise April and her parents with a promise of our support to build a ramp and make other home improvements. After visiting with the family and reviewing the scope, McCarthy decided to also give the family a garage makeover.
“I had the pleasure of meeting April and her family, and I am so appreciative that we were able to have the opportunity to work on this project for them,” commented McCarthy Southeast Vice President of Preconstruction Jeff Toebe. “April is determined to walk again. We explained to her that this project has two parts: the installation of the ramp, and also the removal of it when she’s able to walk again.”
This effort is an outstanding example of what the McCarthy Heart Hats program is all about — quickly responding to a need as we become aware of it and taking on those projects that can really make a difference in someone’s life. Our efforts were even featured on Atlanta’s NBC Channel 11 Alive News as a Random Act of Kindness.
Please keep April in your thoughts on her road to recovery. She is working hard on her therapy and plans to call us the second the ramp is no longer necessary!
A special thank you to our subcontractor volunteers: Precision Concrete, Argos Ready Mix, Wilfab Steel, Cleveland Electric and Eckardt Electric.
