STEM Education Event Introduces Construction Careers to St. Louis-area Students
The construction industry is as busy as we’ve ever seen it. Yet at the same time, builders across the country are facing a historic shortage of labor. A strong, community-based focus on grassroots efforts to help educate students, parents and teachers about possible construction careers is the best way to create a strong pipeline of future talent that benefits the entire construction industry.
Over 25 McCarthy partners in St. Louis recently worked with Parkway Schools and Normandy Schools Collaborative to introduce students, parents and teachers to careers in STEM through a STEM Saturday event. The hands-on event had students learning about everything from DIY home safety and subsurface utility mapping to virtual design and construction technology. The students also learned about power tools and then applied that knowledge to build their own bird houses and memory boards.
Events like STEM Saturday are valuable opportunities to introduce the next generation of construction professionals to the industry. A STEM education is the foundation on which diverse construction careers are built. Whether you work with sophisticated technology systems that help solve design challenges, develop financing solutions for clients or lead teams in the field to deliver extraordinary projects, construction has something for everyone. And as one of the biggest growth industries in America, construction offers attractive salaries, opportunities for advancement and a career that is in high demand.
The McCarthy Partnership for Women took the lead on planning the St. Louis event, coordinating with our employee-partners and the school districts to execute a successful day. In addition to coordinating events like these, the McCarthy Partnership for Women focuses on supporting a culture where the best women join, stay and succeed in their construction careers. Having a diverse workforce enables us to recruit and retain the most qualified partners and provide the best solution for clients. The McCarthy Partnership for Women supports the recruitment, development and retention of the best women in our industry to broaden diversity of perspective.
