East Carolina Heart Institute
The new state-of-the-art East Carolina Heart Institute has dramatically improved surroundings for hospital patients, families and staff. This 375,000-square foot project includes 168 private patient rooms, cardiac treatment and support spaces, minor renovations to the existing hospital and sitework including utility additions and relocations.
The new Heart Institute is full of evidence-based design (EBD) principles to promote patient healing, such as an abundance of windows that provide natural light and views to outside green spaces. Additionally, each of the 168 patient rooms contains a window-side family sitting area with seats that convert to beds.
Alcoves with interior windows on all sides have been built between each pair of operating rooms. Physicians can observe surgeries without having to enter a sterile operating room, and surgeons preparing for surgery will have the advantage of natural daylight from windows in a hallway located behind the operating rooms.
