McCarthy Building Companies has received the 2025 IPMI Apex Award for the Symphony Park L Garage Expansion in downtown Las Vegas, a $29 million project that increased parking capacity, enhanced connectivity with a vehicle bridge over an active railroad, and showcased innovative, community-focused construction.

McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. (McCarthy) is proud to announce that it has been honored with the 2025 IPMI Apex Award in the Restoration: Structured Parking Facility category for the Symphony Park L Garage Expansion in downtown Las Vegas. This prestigious recognition from the International Parking & Mobility Institute highlights McCarthy’s innovative construction methods and commitment to enhancing urban infrastructure.
The Symphony Park L Garage Expansion, a $29 million project, addressed the growing demand for parking in the vibrant Symphony Park area. McCarthy worked with Carpenter Sellers Del Gatto Architects and other trade partners to deliver the vision to the City of Las Vegas. The expansion increased parking capacity from 1,190 to 1,988 spaces by adding three new levels to the existing structure, bringing the total to seven floors. The expanded garage now offers improved accessibility for visitors to key downtown destinations such as City Hall, The Smith Center, and other nearby venues.
“At McCarthy, we take pride in delivering forward-thinking solutions that provide the greatest outcomes for urban environments,” said Ross Edwards, Senior Vice President of McCarthy Building Companies. “The Symphony Park L Garage Expansion is a prime example of our team’s dedication to meeting the community’s evolving needs through efficient project management.”
The Symphony Park L Garage Expansion posed numerous challenges, including constructing a vehicle bridge connecting the Symphony Park L Garage to the nearby City Hall Garage. The bridge spans over an active railroad, allowing for a seamless traffic flow between the two structures and significantly enhancing parking flexibility during peak usage periods.
To execute the bridge construction safely and efficiently, McCarthy's team coordinated extensively with erectors and crane operators. The process involved rigorous planning, including work procedures, rigging calculations, crane operations, and erection plans. The bridge, a 155-foot vehicular steel structure weighing approximately 200,000 lbs., was successfully lifted into place using a Liebherr LR 1600 crane, showcasing precision and expertise.
The project also involved meticulous environmental management due to the site's history as a former fuel storage area. The McCarthy team adhered to stringent environmental protocols, ensuring safe excavation practices during the installation of elevator pits and bridge foundations. Soil testing, containment, and proper disposal were integral to maintaining safety and compliance.
Throughout the 14-month construction period, McCarthy prioritized maintaining access to the lower levels of the fully operational garage. The team implemented extensive safety measures to protect both workers and the public, minimizing disruptions in the busy downtown area.
The Symphony Park L Garage Expansion is a critical enhancement to downtown Las Vegas’ infrastructure, supporting the continued growth of the city’s cultural and civic hub. By expanding parking capacity and improving connectivity, McCarthy has once again demonstrated its expertise in delivering complex, community-focused projects.
