Serrano Solar & Storage
Pinal/Pima County, AZ
Longroad Energy’s Serrano Solar is a landmark 170-megawatt (MW) ac/220 MWdc solar facility with an AC-Coupled 214 MW/860 megawatt-hour (MWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), making it one of the largest solar and storage facilities in Arizona. Spanning over 770 acres in Pima and Pinal Counties, Arizona, Serrano features more than 415,000 high-efficiency photovoltaic panels.
Serrano’s positive environmental impacts prove significant in Arizona, eliminating more than 330,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually — the equivalent of removing 75,000 gas-powered cars from the road. It also contributes over $25 million in local tax benefits, supporting Arizona schools and communities through a long-term Right of Way agreement with the Arizona State Land Department and additional tax remittances.
Serrano served as a proving ground for innovation, with Longroad and McCarthy piloting several new programs and technologies. In addition to launching McCarthy’s Registered Apprenticeship Program with 22 apprentices on site, Serrano introduced cutting-edge systems from American manufacturers First Solar and Nextracker. First Solar’s new American-made Series 7 modules, featuring a frameless design, enabled faster, simpler installation, supporting the project’s emphasis on safety. The project also piloted Nextracker’s HailPro system, that enables panels to rotate to a near-vertical angle during severe weather.
