The City of Hope Medical Center Parking Structure is a six-level facility located on the City of Hope National Medical Center campus in Duarte, California. Designed and constructed to support the medical center’s ongoing growth, the project delivers a 6-level, 987-stall parking garage plus an additional 100 surface spaces, creating 1,087 new parking spaces for patients, visitors, and staff. Strategically located on the east side of campus, the structure serves the future Duarte Outpatient Clinic, adjacent Graff Park, and other medical and event venues, strengthening access across this high-demand healthcare destination.
Delivered using a design-build approach, the delivery method allowed for seamless coordination between design and construction, ensuring the structure met the medical centers operational, functional and aesthetic goals. The architectural massing and façade treatments extend the City of Hope’s healing design philosophy, featuring a "kinetic" facade using over 19,000 brightly colored aluminum tags that move with the wind. McCarthy’s self-perform team delivered the structural concrete, gabion walls, and kinetic façade scopes, introducing practical innovations that enhanced quality, safety, and schedule performance.
The scope of work included the full design and construction of the parking structure, with a focus on high performance standards and complex jurisdictional coordination. One of the project’s most unique challenges was working across two city jurisdictions, with the boundary between Irwindale and Duarte running through the middle of the structure. Through close coordination and collaboration with both cities, the team kept the project progressing forwar from start to finish.
Completed in 2021, the City of Hope Medical Center Parking Structure has been recognized nationally for its sustainability and design. The project exemplifies McCarthy’s commitment to delivering innovative, community-focused infrastructure that supports healthcare excellence and operational efficiency.
